The Class of miVETEEIV HUlVDRED FIFTY FOUR Presents MEMORIES OF EVERETT HIGH SEHDDL Everett Massacliusetts Joseph J. Cantalupi Head of Couiiiicrcial Department DEDICATIDIV The class of ' 54, just as those who have gone before and those who are to follow, recognize the tempered qualities of this man. We have found him to be stern, but kind, unselfish, personable, thorough, understanding, wise, untiring, honest, sincere and friendly. It is with genuine pride that we, the class of nineteen hundred fifty-four, have the privilege of respectfully dedicating Memories to, Joseph J. Cantalupi, The Teacher. [2] MARTIN G. SANBORN Principal CHARLES E. BLEILER Siiluiiastcr THAMS Many times in the glamour and excitement of life, great and deciding factors as to our future are overlooked. It would be remiss on our part if we should leave to face the world without a friendly smile and a fond farewell to these two men who have so exemplified the spirit of help and co-opperation. We thank you both for everything you have done to steer us on a course of security on this sea of life that our ultimate port of success may be obtained. [3] [4] [5] SENIOR- COUNCIL [6] President Vice President Frank Petroni Joseph Parziale FOHEWDHD Three years ago we entered Everett High School carrying with us a multitude of hopes, expectations, and ambitions. Now we go forth as finished products of this institution, one step nearer our goal. Always shall we treasure the precious memories of these, our high school days, and always will our task be to practice and exemplify in every way those teachings which have been culled from the portals of this ; our Alma Mater. SEMDR CLASS HISTORY ACT I The opening scene of this drama takes place in the confines of that well known house of learn- ing, the Albert N. Parlin Junior High School, in the year of nineteen hundred fifty. Participating, is a well known cast of Frank Petroni, President ; Kathleen Donnelly, Vice Presi- dent ; and Anthony Pento, Secretary-Treasurer ; ably assisted by a mob-scene of about four hun- dred characters. Engendered and deep rooted in their collective minds is the very satisfying con- viction, that now at last, no longer is there a class of many, but rather a solid machine made up of many with a singleness of purpose. A sturdy lot, a vibrant group, a cast of workers all. We find that a freshman ' s life takes on a little brighter hue. Boy notices girl, girl responds. How delicately is handled the first real social on a Friday afternoon, and how improved they seem to be as the year passes. Activity is the bye-word as is proved by the overwhelming response to the call for athletic teams, debating teams, talent show, public speaking contest, band, orchestra, glee club and other varied activities. This all too short, action-filled, act is hi-lighted by the awarding of the Parlin P to eleven of the worthy cast. As the curtain falls the climax is reached with the entire cast being pre- sented certificates of achievement which grants them the privilege of carrying their play to a larger theatre. ACT H Adjustment of the cast to its new environment in the Everett High School seems, at first, to be chaotic. Like unwanted children they wander about, laughed at, scorned, and ridiculed. Gone is the dignity of its position in life. Gradually this class, like a ship on a stormy sea, seeks haven and guidance in its leaders of the past. Once again it ' s Frank Petroni as President, Anthony Pento as Vice-President, Toby Newman as Secretary, and Kathleen Donnelly as Treasurer. As an added feature to the leading players, we find greater student representation is needed. Our entire cast rises to the call and elects to student council Marion Bond, Theresa Pagnini, and Frank Vacca. The first taste of true unity comes in quick time as the class is represented on the football field by Caiazzo, Marques, Frontero and Sapienza. This is the first outward sign that the class of ' 54 is truly needed and welcome. The scene of action passes to the gym where the first social of the year is held, the Sophomore Hop. The Hop is no flop, but strange to say, both a social and financial success despite the handicap of the band being two and a half hours late, because of a snow storm the first night, and then failing to even show up at the next one. Progress is shown throughout the year as these little sophomores gradually adjust themselves and show their abilities by performing in the band, orchestra, Gilbert and Sullivan, and the Talent Show. As the year draws to a close, after what seems to be a dragged out length of time, we see our class a real threat to the upper classmen by their scholastic, athletic and social abilities. ACT HI September again and we gaze at the cast which is growing into young ladyhood and young man- hood. How they strut and Lord it over those poor sophomores. How short is their memory in one brief year. Once again Frank Petroni is chosen President, Anthony Pento, Vice President ; Jean Palmer, Secretary, and Rosemarie Cantalupi, Treasurer. Marion Bond, Toby Newman, Marguerite Pecci, and Ronald Vacca are chosen as members of the student council. In the field of sports Caiazzo, Frontero, Sapienza, Marques, Parziale, O ' Keefe, Lionette, Cocciardi, and numerous others are standouts. Once again. Dramatics, Gilbert and Sullivan, and the Glee Club are enforced by the members of the Junior Class. Football games, basketball games, dances, assem- blies and presentations of the various clubs all tend to make the burden of those terrible classes a great deal lighter. The climax of the year is the festive Junior Prom. A glorious time was had by all and thus ends the third act. ACT IV It seems only yesterday that this same group met in this same assembly hall for the purpose of home room distribution. The full forces of the realization that this is the last time does not strike this happy lot. Class officers are chosen with Frank Petroni, President; Joseph Parziale, Vice President; Rosemarie Cantalupi, Treasurer ; and Lois Mac- Crae, Secretary. The school council of Marion Bond, Peter Cocciardi, Ann Del Isola, Robert Lionette, and Ronald Vacca are chosen and at once swing into the task of preparing assemblies and functions to make this the biggest and the best year. Marion Bond is chosen Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook, ably assisted by Bob Lionette, Frank Vacca, Joe Parziale, and Leo Squatrito. The athletic teams, as mentioned in other pages, were ably represented by outstanding members of the class. Mr. Ashley, the Superintendent of Schools for many years, is the first member of this graduating class and receives his diploma on January first. Our former Principal at the Parlin Junior High, Mr. William P. Canty, is chosen to replace Mr. Ashley. Gradually March sneaks up on our heroes, and at long last, on the night of March 19, we see glamour and beauty present at the long awaited Senior Ball. Time melts into nothingness as the yearbooks are distributed. Class Day comes and goes, and the sad but happy occasion of the final official gathering of the class of ' 54 takes place. Graduation : The parting of the ways. Farewell classmates and actors all. May your future be just as bright and even brighter than what seemed to be so dull in the glorious past. SEMDH PHDM Barbara Shattuck Strains of sweet music, soft lights, the rustle of beautiful gowns, and the handsome appearance of young men in their formal dress, all meant t hat the long awaited special night had finally arrived. The Everett High Gym was decorated on the theme of Fiesta Time in Mexico by our talented prom committee. Over 200 couples, along with honored guests, attended this memo- rable event. The grand march was led by President Frank Petroni and his escort. The highlight of the evening was the picking of the king and queen. Bob Marques and Barbara Shattuck won this great honor. Now we can settle down to our usual pattern of life. No more hair setting, gown fittings, and worrying over corsages. It is all over, but the memories shall linger on for a lifetime. We are all very grateful to Mr. Daniele and Miss Gerety for their splendid work in making this a night never to be forgotten. 1 86 1 SCHOOL COUNCIL First Rozv — Left to Right: Robert Lionetti, Marion Bond, Mr. Putnam, Miss Gibbons, Mr. Bleiler, Ann Dell Isola, Ronald Vacca, Peter Cocciardi. The School Council consists of twelve members elected by the students to represent the student body as a whole and to function for the good of the entire school. The functions of the School Council are many, including the arrangement and the presentation of assemblies, the promotion of school spirit, and the raising of money for its projects. This year the Council sponsored the School Council Dance on November 13 and presented the Annual Talent Show on May 14. Through the School Council the students this year were able to purchase very attractive Everett High School charm bracelets. The profits from these undertakings are used to secure educational as well a s entertaining assemblies. Approximately thirty-three assemblies were presented during the year, the majority of which were paid assemblies. In order to stimulate neatness on the part of the pupils and pride in the appearance of their school, two Clean-Up campaigns were conducted during this year — one in October and one at the end of March. The Semi-Annual and Spring Conventions of the Eastern Massachusetts Division of School Councils were held in November and in April, respectively. The State Convention was held in May. At these conventions, the Council members not only enjoyed the sociability of the occasion, but also learned of the functions of other School Councils. At the Spring Convention last year one of our members, Marion Bond, was elected to the office of Secretary of the Eastern Massachusetts Division of School Councils for the school year 1953-1954. The Council members extend sincere thanks and appreciation to Mr. Charles Bleiler, our submaster. Miss Julia Gibbons, and Mr. Lenox Putnam for their inspiration and invaluable guidance during this most successful school year 1953-1954. [87] DRAMATIC CLASS The Dramatic Class of E. H. S. with Mr. John F. McLaughHn as director, again this year has carried on its fine tradition. Primarily its purpose is to help its members develop and improve their personalities. This is accomplished by participation in weekly recitations, panto- mimes, and skits. This year the activities of the Dramatic Class included its attendance at the annual Drama Conference of Emerson College. Also the club presented a delight- ful play entitled The Farmers Daughter in the Massachusetts Drama Festival at Cohasset. The cast members were as follows : Sally Ann Holmes, Myrna Dersofi, Natalie Johnson, Lois MacCrea, Malcolm Labelle, Sidney Poretsky, Andrew Galleuccio. OFFICERS Merle Butler Carolyn Stacey ... The club has a three-fold objective : 1. To put to practical use the language studied in the class room. 2. To stimulate cooperation between parents and pupils. 3. To complement the study of the language by examining Italian culture. This year the club ' s objective was realized by the following activities: 1. The annual Italian play was presented May 7, 1954. It was in the form of a television program which included excerpts from the famous classic Pinocchio, and a short play I Verbi Transitiui. 2. A Parents ' night was held December 7, 1953. A one hour class in Italian was given. The parents and pupils sat together and participated. A collation was served in the library after the class. 3. During the bi-weekly meetings, reports on famous men were read. The members also learned many Italian folk and popular songs. Once again it ' s football time and who can think of football without thinking of Everett High. The Crimson Tide, on paper, looked like the team to beat this year but was to be handicapped by the loss of Co-Captain Jim Frontero, whose injury of the previous year did not heal in time for competition. Our forward wall was composed of senior standouts such as Co-Captain Bob Marques, at center ; Di SciuUo, Trentini, Moreschi, and Sal Caruso at guards ; Joe Parziale, Tino Valeri, and Fred Kelly at tackles; and Johnny O ' Keefe and Art Anderson our stella ends. In the backfield directing the team at quarterback was that outstanding all-round ball player ' s, ball player Rico Sapienza, ably assisted by Frankie Vacca and Joe Steene. At fullback Sleepy Jack Kelley was the choice. Flanking the fullback spot were Mel Ashton, Richie Clericuzio, and last but not least the great one, George Caiazzo. George was in his glory in a foot- ball game and this was his year. His devastating runs amassed a total of 134 points for the year. Manager of the squad was the very quiet and competent Richard Knight. For our opener, on a hot September Saturday, we took on a very strong and rugged Weymouth team. They were still smarting from their defeat at our hands the year previous and proceeded to prove it. After a gruelling see-saw battle, Weymouth, after twice coming from behind, came out the winner 25-12. Caiazzo furnished both scores for our side on runs of forty and sixty-five yards. After a week ' s rest, we took on Somerville High on Friday night. The loss to Weymouth was soon for- gotten as our heroes belted their old rivals to the tune of 20-0. Once again it was Caiazzo, ably assisted by Sapienza on ofifense and Bob Marques a tower of strength on defence. Next came Quincy. This was nip and tuck all the way. Even though the Big Red was the better team by far, the score showed only a one touchdown difference 19-13. The Lynn Classical game isn ' t what it used to be. Everett 40 - Lynn 0. Caiazzo broke all records as he personally scored thirty three points. Sappy was the feed off boy and he managed to save one T.D. for himself. Things were looking up for the Gildeamen, and the rest of the season looked to be a walk-in. The Medford Mustangs were to be our next oppo- nents and they were not to be too greatly feared. Ouch ! Evidently they hadn ' t read our write ups. Medford 14 - Everett 9. Our George was stopped cold. Nuf sed. Relations were renewed with Rindge Tech. the fol- lowing week and we came back, but not too strongly. Again it was Sapienza and Caiazzo to the tune of 16-6. A postponement and a two weeks rest put us in great shape for our ancient rival Maiden. The Golden Tornadt) turned out to be but a little puff. Maiden opened with a sleeper and caught the boys flat footed right off the bat. Maiden led 7-0 but then things happened. Sappy started to pass to O ' Keefe, George started to run and that was the end. Even with three runs of seventy yards and better by Caiazzo nullified, we managed to be on the long end by 26-7. Our postponed game with Brockton was next. Brock- ton fell apart and our team simply roared over them. How can we ever forget the sight of Bob Marques ' skillful gallop for a T. D. and his complete collapse in the end zone. Every player was outstanding in this 40-7 win. Thanksgiving Day and Chelsea. Everett the under dog. A trip to New York and Washington for Chelsea. No chance of losing, — they were up for this one. It certainly looked that way as the jam-packed stadium watched Chelsea go into an early 6-0 lead. Everett just barely held on most of the first half and it wasn ' t until a few minutes were left that they seemed to get a little spark from somewhere and then it happened, Georgie went off tackle, cut back, headed for the side- lines and not even the strange dogs on the field could have caught him. The score was tied 6-6 at the half and our hopes were high. The second half, and for some reason Chelsea looked like a beaten group. This was to be the way it turned out, for the roof seemed to fall in on them. O ' Keefe made a one handed running catch from Sapienza to bring the ball down close and Caiazzo went over. Sapienza then scored one and Chelsea was completely dumb-founded. Before they could even get started again Frank Vacca tossed to Richie Tarmarra and Chelsea had nothing left but the weeping towel when he scored. The end of the regular season showed a 7-2 record. All-scholastic honors were attained by Bob Marques and George Caiazzo, but in our eyes they were all our all-scholastics. At the conclusion of the regular season eight of our boys participated in the annual all-star game and each covered himself with glory. Rico Sapienza was chosen as the most valuable player. Those who took part in this game were Sapienza, Caiazzo, Marques, Trentini, Moreschi, O ' Keefe, Valeri and Caruso. Congratulations boys. Tackle life as you tackled on the football field and you can ' t help but attain your ultimate goal — success. 199] BASKETBALL First Rozv. Second Row: Edward Dorgan, Donald Reddington, William Cassidy, Salvatore Rossio, Mr. Lenox Putnam, Coach ; Mr. DiGiacomo, Assistant Coach ; Frank Raduazzo, Robert Sansoni, Joseph Raso, Anthony Sciulla. The 1953-1954 basketball team, although not having a winning season, was a team that Everett High School can be proud of. The team had comparable little height, but made up for it with its ability to hustle. Leading the team in scoring were Bob Lionette, Pete Cocciardi, and Rico Sapienza respectively. Jim Frontero, Bob Stewart, and Ron Vacca were excellent playmakers. Jim Cassidy, Frank Radurazzo, and Ted Dorgan were excellent replacements and helped the team tremendously. With a few good breaks, the team could have had a much better record. The club started on the right track by whipping Reading 65-53. It lost to Waltham 56-45, but came back beating a good Newton team 43-36. Then came three straight defeats at the hands of Somerville, Quincy, and Revere. Next came a victory over Lowell for Coach Putnam, who was sick and missed one of his few games in his 26th year as coach. Disaster struck, as the team lost six straight games. We did scare tech-tourney-bound Quincy and Revere by losing by six and one points respectively. The team beat Lowell and lost a heartbreaker to Maiden 43-40. Medford walloped us 80-56, but realizing this was their last game playing together, the team upset Chelsea 54-39, playing its best game of the season.
