Under the capable leadership of Audrey Clark as president ; Sal- vadore Napolitano as Vice President ; Elena Rocco as Secretary and Barbara Moores as Treasurer, the class of 1953 proved to be a group of energetic and enthusiastic students. The talents of our classmates were displayed in the Dramatic Club, Debating Club, band, or- chestra, and the athletes were first in gaining recognition. Recollections of our Freshman year include Parlin Socials, outstanding assemblies contrib- uted by the Dramatic Club, Debating Team, the Talent Assembly sponsored by the unforgettable Traffic Squad at which our colleagues displayed talents which heretofore had been hidden. On Parlin Day, thirteen members of our class were proud recipients of the Parlin P award. Thus ended a year which had been successful and full of happy moments. When September rolled around again, we, as sophomores, made our long anticipated entrance into Everett High School hoping for the best and expecting the worst. As our leaders, we chose Carole Gosselin, as President ; Doreen Gardner as Vice President ; Elena Rocco as Sec- retary ; Barbara Moores as Treasurer, while Norma Barnes, Audrey Clark and Anne Middle- ton represented the Sophomore Class on the School Council. While trying to outwit upper- classmen and trying to be optimistic about the pranks played on us as the underclassmen, we were enthusiastically taking part in the Gilbert Sullivan Club, Glee Club, Lyceum, band, or- chestra, Italian Club and Spanish Club. On the sports field our classmates were showing their athletic abilities. Highlights of our Sophomore ear included our Sophomore Hop, Yeoman of the Guard, Italian Night and Variety Time of 1951. The following fall found our Junior Class bus- ily engaged in electing Janet Baker as President; Jeanne Harding as ' ice President; Lorraine Porriello as Secretary ; and Barbara Moores as Treasurer. The Junior representatives on the School Council were Norma Barnes, Carole Gos- selin, Florence Napolitano, and Katherine Terrio. The class of 1953 was rapidly becoming a vital part of Everett High School. Many of us par- ticipated in the productions of Drama Night, H. M. S. Pinafore, Italian Night and Varieties of 1952. Besides the talents displayed in these activ- ities, the gridiron, court, diamond, and cinder j)ath were feeling the impact of our energetic athletes. ( ur Junior year came to a grand finale with the long awaited Junior Prom. Classmates worked untiringly side by side preparing for the big night. Our school gym was transformed into a Hawaiian paradise to the delight of all present. When the Class of 1953 again assembled in Rockwood Auditorium, it was as the Senior Class. Our first duty was to elect the students who would wield the gavel of authority for our most memor- able year. Female politicians again held the rule when Janet Baker was elected President ; Beverlee Ahlin, Vice President; Lucy DiPaulo, Secretary; and Barbara Moores, Treasurer. Meanwhile, on the School Council Norma Barnes was Student Chairman and Florence Napolitano was Secre- tary-Treasurer while Katherine Terrio, James Beattie and Ronald Courtney were representatives. 170 1. The purpose of this group is to develop the personalities of members through a knowledge of stage technic, and to enrich their cultural backgrounds by an under- standing of drama as a fine art. These ideals are accomplished by weekly practice on stage in the presentation of skits, verbal exercises, and pantomimes. In addi- tion, the group is advised on various phases of stage presence and the drama by their able director. Dramatic Club activities this year included a tea, which was given for the parents of members. In addition, the club successfully participated in the Massa- chusetts Drama Festival at Marblehead. The play presented was Overtones. Members of the cast included June Bleet, Nancy Dersofi, Toby Newman, Sidney Poger, John Shields, Beverly Stable, and Ella Westerman. Thanks to the untiring efYorts of our director and cast, the warmth and sim- plicity of the beloved March family was re-lived, creating a fine and enjoyable performance. This year a wonderful assembly program was scheduled by the School Council, financed by their annual Talent Show and dance. Under the direction of the Council, a thorough clean-up campaign was con- ducted which added greatly to the appearance of our school. The members of the Council attended two conventions this } ear, namely : the fall convention at Winchester High School in November and the spring convention at Gloucester High School in April. FOOTBALL TEAM 1952-1953 Davis, Grande, Annetti, Coviello Horseman Zellan Co-Captains — Mangranaro, Molle Napolitano Colameta Vietri, Valari, Supine, Arcari FDDTBM.L The Crimson Tide has risen again ! Not since the ' 45 season has an Everett High School football team gained so much fame and publicity. Beginning with the Weymouth game and ending with the All-Star Game, Everett ' s boys and the Everett football team were in the news. Lead by Co-captains Al MoUe and John Manganaro we racked up a 7 and 2 record against the best teams of class A . The Everett Tank Line, with a combined weight of over a ton was another high light of the season. We had been looking forward to the opening game with Weymouth since the close of the ' 51 season. When we took the field nothing could stop us, not even the three year state champion, Weymouth. With Everett ' s line and Carmen Annetti ' s ball stealing act leading the way, sve played Weymouth to a scoreless tie in the first half. Everett had a big chance to score when Frontero passed to Arcari on the Weymouth 30. Arcari, turning to make the catch, looked up into the sun and lost the ball. Oh for a pair of sun- glasses ! The touchdown came at the end of a drive that started on the Everett Zl yard line; a nine play blitz that wound up early in the fourth period, with Jimmy Frontero running 31 yards to pay dirt. On the way, some fine line bucking was displayed by Sal Napolitano and George Caiazzo. After that victory, the season was sure to be a success. After breaking Weymouth ' s 31 game winning streak, we ran up against another one in Somerville. Somerville had beaten us for the last four years, but this was no obstacle for the Crimson Tide to overcome. The only thing that could stop Everett that Friday night was the rain, so the game had to be called off until the next night. The first Everett touchdown was made by Sal Napolitano, who dove over from two yards out. Our second score came on a trick reverse on a punt return. Whitey Davis took the punt, and running across field handed it ofif to Caiazzo, who ran 56 yards for the score. The game was won in the final minutes, with Somerville touchdown bound on the Everett 40 .Co-captain Al Molle grabbed a wayward pass and raced 60 yards to score, only then to faint from the shock. The final score was 20 to 13, and the Crimson Tide rolled cm ward. Our next game with Quincy proved once again that the Everett line was too much. Early in the second quarter the wear and tear began to show, and we began to go. With Al Molle, Carmine Annetti, and Mario Valarie making the holes, fullback Sal Napolitano and halfback George Caiazzo blasted their way to the Quincy 4, from there Sal dove into the end zone for the score. We added another in the fourth on a pass from Frontero to Sapienza good for 25 yards and the score. The defensive stars of the game were Joe Supino, Bob Marques, and Orlando Grande with some tackles that still can be felt. The final score was 13 to 0. We hit high tide against Lynn Classical. George Caiazzo coming off the sick list to score all our points, as we swamped a determined Lynn team. Caiazzo ' s runs will never be forgotten in Manning Bowl, up to midway in the fourth period we hadn ' t even made a first down. Whitey Davis filling in for the injured Frontero showed he was a capable quarterback in calling the plays. He passed to Caiazzo for one of the scores. The final score was 25 to 6. We found ourselves again in the spotlight as the game of the day. But this time victory was not ours. Medford dropped us from the unheaten ranks 14 to 6. With |ohn Arcari recovering a fumble and making a sensational catch we drove to the Medford THREE and with seconds remaining in the half Sapienza crashed over for the score. W ' e threatened many times in the last half, hut fumbles and penalties hurt. Medford ' s speed proved too much for our big linemen. We gained our winning ways against hapless Revere. It was LETTER NIGHT as Coach Gildea mercifully cleared the bench in the second half. The Everett TANKLINE first saw action with Tino Valeri, Jim Moreschi, Mario V ' aleri, Joe Parziale, Bob Marques, Joe Herlihy and Ole Grande, making up the 1692 pound line. Caiazzo scored three more touchdowns with Coviello, Manganaro and Colameta all scoring in the rout. On we roared to a smashing 22 to 0 ' ictory over Brockton, with Juniors, Caiazzo and Sapienza leading the way. Our first score came as Alex Molle trapped a Brockton back in the end zone to give us a 2 to 0 lead. Caiazzo then grabbed a Brockton punt and ran 60 yards for the score. Americo Sapienza swept Brockton end for the second touchdown in the third period. A Whitey Davis to John Man- ganaro pass put the ball on the Brockton 10 and Sapienza carried the rest of the way for the final score. Our next Foe was Arch Rival Maiden and with a pending bowl bid and the old tradition staring us in the face. We got the second half jitters and lost 13 to 6. The first half ended up as Whitey Davis passed to Sapienza for a score and we went into the club house confident of victory. In the second half the little Maiden backs ran all over our tank line. If they had only run into us instead of around us the game would have been ours. We threatened again in the final period going to the Maiden 10, with Sapienza calling the plays 4 passes fell incomplete and we went down to our second defeat. We finished up our season in fine style by defeating our Thanksgiving Day Rival — Chelsea — 20 to 13. We drove 49 yards to a hard earned score in the first period with Sal Napolitano and Bob Coviello leading the way. In the second period John Arcari grabbed a If ' hitey Davis Pass in the Chelsea secondary and galloped the remaining 35 yards for our second score. Our third touchdown came in the fourth quarter by capitalizing on a faulty Chelsea pass and Sapienza scored his second touchdown. Everett ' s mighty line made their last ( never to be for- gotten) goal line stand in the final minutes to preserve Victory and to end up a successful season in grand style. To top olY a successful season six Everett Line Men and six Everett Cheer- leaders with their Coach, participated in the Suburban All Star Game. The game was won by our Co-Captain, John Manganaro, with a 65 yard kick off return. The Football Rally and Parties contributed much to the team ' s morale. We ' d like to thank all the Cheerleaders and Majorettes for the wonderful attention they gave our team. BASKETBALL TEAM Coach Putnam, R. Lionetti, A. Sapienza, R. Stewart, W. Davis, Co-captain, S. The season ' s record of five wins and nine losses in league play, seven and ten all together, is not exactly impressive but it gave the boys the needed expe- rience to make them a better ball club the next time they take the floor. In our first game against Lynn Classical we were victorious by the score of 63-48. Then came Waltham and defeat 64-43. This was followed by a 51-38 vic- tory over Newton, giving us two wins and a loss in pre-league games. Our league season started at Lowell and we got off on the right foot with a 51-47 victory. Then disaster struck. We were hit by four straight losses. First, to one of the best Revere teams in years followed by Somerville, Quincy, and Chelsea. We got back on the victory trail with a win over our neighbor Maiden 49-45. However, the trail was short and we were defeated in our next game by the pre-season favorites, Medford. Even though losing, this was the best game that we played in the first half of the season. The second half of the season started off in the .same fashion as the first, with a victory over Lowell. Then came revenge on Revere by a score of 50-42. Next was Somerville, at the end of the first half the score was 35-24 Somerville leading. All looked hopeless ! In the second half the boys put on a great exhibition only to fall short in the final minute. The final score was Somerville 54 Everett 52. This game was followed by two more defeats by Quincy and Chelsea. We got back on the right side of the ledger with a 53-44 victory over arch-rival Maiden. In the final game of the season we were defeated by Medford 54-51, but it was one of the finest exhibitions of high school basketball to be seen. Among the seniors on the team are the co-captains William Whitey Davis and Salvatore Napolitano. Davis is probably the best defensive player that Coach Putnam has. Whitey also has a nifty one hand push shot that made him an equally dangerous offensive threat. Sal showed that he could hold his own on any court. The other seniors are Thomas Green and Robert Smith who are missing from the picture. 1051 Vim TRACK TEAM First Row: J. Northrup, J. Manganaro, R. Coviello, (Captain), J. Pomer, B. Joseph. Pace. , Coach John Kilhan is looking forward to a banner year for the track team ll ' l this spring, although he will have hard work to fill the shoes of such graduated stars as Captain Robert Johnstone, David Peerson, William Perkins, Larry Amo- rosa, and James Gibson. tj He will have to rely heavily on star lettermen : Captain Bob Coviello, milers I Jack Northrop and Richard Knight, short putters Al Molle, Orlando Grande, Mario Valeri, broad jumper Joe Astuti, and runners John Manganaro, Burton I Joseph, and John Pomer. In addition to these outstanding veterans he will be ' aided by sophomore Lennie Tarasuk and high jumper Mel Ashton.
