With great pride we introduce our School Council. This distinctive organization helps maintain right spirit and good citizenship, acts as a clearing house and forum for the consideration of extxc-cuniculur problems. and prepares and presents, under faculty guidance, an excellent series 0! assemblies. Gibbons, Faculty Advisor One of the most important projects assumed by the School Council during the year is the annual Talent Show which is presented each year for the purpose of raising money with which to pay for worthwhile assembly programs. This year a most successful Spring Convention of the Eastern Division of Massa- chusetts Student Councils was held here at the Everett Senior High School on Satur- day, April 7. Needless to say, the School Council of nineteen fifty-one has afforded us merito- rious service which could not have been realized without the invaluable guidance and assistance of Mr. Bleiler. Submasten and Miss Gibbons. We, the Class of 1951. extend our appreciation to these eminent representatives of the student body and their advisers. w :1; ivN Lump x - maul, ' 10 Sports Staff ll ennui: mosconli Amen coz ANITA WCf-PRES. SICRETARY 12 JA NET M4 rsoxv AUDREY Ki??? TREASURER Senior Class History With our heads held high and our best foot forward we. the Class of 1951, en- tered our Freshman year in the Albert N. Parlin Iunior High School. Determination to perform pmiseworthy deeds was foremost in our minds. Those selected to lead us were Charles Landxy, Audrey Colametu, Iocm Kenison. and George Snow. Realiz- ing that u well-bulanced life is essential to success. many classmates supplemented their scholastic interests with extracurricular activities. Consequently, we laid a strong foundation in an appreciation of athletics, debating. dramatics, and music. Through- out the year many fine assemblies were presented, a frequent source of enjoyment to the faculty and student body. On the lighter side we shall always remember such events as the gay socials, the mirthful scenes in the cafeteria, and the domination of the Traffic Squad. The zenith of our achievements was reached when eighteen mem- bers of our Class, outstanding in scholarship, athletics, and citizenship, received the distinguished Purlin P Award. At the beginning of our Sophomore year contusion reigned supreme. but we finally managed to overcome the difficulties arising from the traditional elevator hoax and the enigmatic system of room numbers. The election that year resulted in the follow- ing class officers: Charles Landry, Audrey Colametcx, Icmet Watson, and Audxey Kerr. At the same time. Ioun Kenison, Cynthia Normine, and Barbara Seratini were elected as our representatives to the School Council. For the most part, the year was spent in adapting ourselves to the existing condtions, and working diligently at our studies. By emulating the pattern of the illustrious upper classmen, we. the Class of 1951, were beginning to make an impressive name in the annals of Everett High School. As Juniors, we were guided by the capable leadership of President Charles Landry, Vice President Audrey Colametu. Secretary Ianet Watson, Treasurer Audxey Kerr, and the School Council members, Barbara Seratini, Robert Caprio, Robert Cook. and Richard Laskey. In this very important year we established ourselves as a vital part of the life of Everett High School. Junior Achievement was the newest and most popular club that year. Do you remember hand-made bookmarks. germicide, the Crimson Tide, and oh, so many products which made their appearance on Everett High School's market? The super- vision of the officers and the Iunior Prom committee created an event of unforget- table successethe Iunior Prom. Thus our Junior year ended, and we were carried one step further toward our ultimate goalegmduution. In the light of the national emergency e the critical situation in Korea - many of our classmates were required to leave us in our Senior year. It seemed now that we were face to face with the adult world. Class activity, however, continued. Our officers in this, our most important year, were Frank Guilicmo. Audrey Columetcx, Janet Watson and Audrey Kerr. Represent- atives to the School Council were as follows: Barbara Semiini, Robert Captio, Robert Cook, George Snow, and Donald Whitehouse. 13 s ; Senior Class History tmnto Many fine assemblies were presented throughout the year. The Howards of Virginia, a historical movie depicting the spirit of the American Revolution; the su- perb talk and film concerning lighthouses on the Atlantic Coast by Mr. Edward Rowe Snow; the outstanding Boston College Prize Debate; and Variety Time, the spectac- ular talent show put on by the students, will long be remembered. You Can't Take It With You, our Senior Class play. through the splendid ei- forts of Mr. William Richmond, the director, proved to be a sparkling success. Some other memorable productions in which members of our class participated were Our Town. The Yeoman of the Guard, Italian Night, and the Talent Show. The highlight of on! Senior year was the much heralded Senior Prom. The gym- nasium, decorated in the colorful rainbow hues which complemented the army of beautiful colors in the gowns, produced a breathtaking spectacle. TAKE NOTE, TAKE NOTE, OH, WORL . . . The experiences which we have had at Everett High School are indicative of happy and successful years. Let this be prophetic of our future. 14 650,955 mow mamr com pomp MWfEZMVSf MMMNI MMWIL f' .1; AAA! As the Senior Class at the Parlin. it immediately assumed its responsibilities under the leadership of Class President, Sheldon Gardner; Vice-President. Doris Ciampu; Secretary, Donald Cobum: and Treasurer, Nancy de Sopha. Highlight of a supremely successful year came on Purlin Day, when the Parlin P was proudly accepted by sixteen of our most deserving members. September of '49 brought a lcng-awaited moment to the class entrance into the Everett High School. After the initial contusion had cleared. we selected Sheldon Gardner, President; Doris Powers. Vice-President; Jane Collins, Secretary: and Joan Sparks. Treasurer. Meanwhile, Carol Alden, Audrey McCarthy, and Iames Caccivio represented the class in the Student Council, and Sophomore faces were being in- creasingly found in all phases of School Activities. In the spring. we were proud to present the Sophomore Hop the first such dance sponsored by Sophomores in twenty-iive years. We returned as Juniors in 1950 full of new confidence and ambition. Now an integral part of the school. the participation of the Juniors in all activities was an important tactox in the success of many productions. Our leaders were Maureen O'Keete as President; Doris Powers, Vice-President; Jane Collins, Secretary; and Joan Sparks, Treasurer. Carol Alden, Iames Caccivio, James O'Keeie, and Paul Mastrocola filled the Iunior seats in the Student Council. The list of Honor Students includes the following: Jacquelyn Cordeim, Doris Di Tullio, Nancy Le Pore. Philip Oliviero, Ieun Price. Allan Seltzer, Arthur Warner, Rita D'Orlando, Brenda Duncan, Sheldon Gmdner, Anita Glenn, Sylvia Einbindet, Dorothy Kaufman, Daniel McDermott, In. Carol O'Neil, Doris Ruskin. Josephine Circo, Marie Moscaritolo, Edith Spinney, Elaine Bazbuto, Louette Dunner. Iune Erickson, Mary Gallant, Lorraine Pomex. Paul Richmond. Marie Solari, Evelyn Sullivan. Barbara Turner. In basketball. Gerry MacDonald, Robert Johnston, and William Brownlie, contrib- uted to the team's success. Participating in the Annual Boston College Debate were Sheldon Gardner, Sum- mer Katz and Roger Dribben. Roger Dxibben brought further honor to the Junior Class when he was awarded the Boston College Medal as best speaker. Plans are now being made for our Iunioz Prom, an event long awaited by the class. The Welfare State, cm important national issue, was the subject for argument at the Boston College Club prize debate on February 28, 1951. This event was the twenty-second in an annual series initiated by Attorney Walter Morris. Upholding the affirmative side of the question, Resolved: That the American People Should Reject the Welfare State, were Sumner Katz and Sheldon Gardner; while Roger Driben and Louis Petroni voiced the negative opinions. The negative team was awarded the decision; and Roger Driben, as the best speaker, received the Boston College Club gold medal. Throughout the year, debates were held with other schools on the same question. The opposition were representatives of Revere High School, Waltham High School, and Brown and Nichols. Lyceum members participated in outside speaking contests as well. Sidney Poger took part in the American Legion contest in March, while Sheldon Gardner and Sumner Katz represented Everett High School at the Boston University Debuting Tournament. A little later, Roger Driben, Sheldon Gardner, Sumner Katz, and Louis Petroni appeared in the Suffolk University Tournament. Several contributions were made to various school assemblies by members of the Lyceum. In November. Robert Stewart spoke at the Armistice Day gathering. Later in the month. Roger Driben presented a speech on the origin of Thanksgiving. At the Christmas assembly Robert Cook, Icrmes Beats. Robert Stewart, and Ray Roberts recited a short article on Peace. McLaughlin. has made great strides toward both of its goalseimproving the members' personalities and furthering the students' appreciation oi the dramatic curt. Through the use of a recording machine. each pupil is made cognizant of his own speech defects. and he can correct them. A variety show, to be presented in the form of a radio program, was also recorded to: the benefit of the students. Along with the active parts taken by the members, a great deal of time was spent in constructive listening while Mr. McLaughlin lee tured on stage technique, construction. and presence. The most important occasion on the Dramatic Club roster, Drama Night, was held on January 26, 1951. Tackling the very difficult Our Town , the cast presented a finished and thoroughly enjoyable performance. In addition to these accomplishments, the club spent many enjoyable hours in theutxe parties. The outings proved to be both instructive and pleasurable. The continuance of these activities could only establish the Club's reputation more firmly. The Dramatic Club is certainly a group of which the Evexett High School students can be proud. However. the Club could never have accomplished so much this year without the able assistance and direction of Mr. McLaughlin. Each member of the Staff devotes one period a week to library work. The Soph- omore members spend this time mending books; the Juniors shelve books: and the Seniors perform the desk duties. The annual Book Fair, featuring the sale of second-hcmd books and periodicals, was held in November. This year, as in preceding years, the Fair proved to be a great success. Functioning also as a club, the Library Staff has enjoyed many social hours to- gether by attending plays, concerts, or anything else that catches their fancy. Thus, the staff secures cultural and practical advantages which afford much pleasure to the members. The Library Staff offers the individual the satisfaction of being useful while enjoying hersell. At A R'ITIILT The Everett Senior High School Band has taken its place as one of the best school bands in Massachusetts. The Bond numbers over sixty-five players plus its comple- ment of eleven majorettes, flag bearers, color guards, and cheer leaders. With the exception of the lower reeds, it has a full instrumentation and it is capable of perform- ing the standard works for band, both classical and modem. The Band each year participates in the Massachusetts Music Festival, where it competes with the best bands in the state. Besides its activities at parades and football games, the Everett High Band has given numerous concerts in connection with school and community functions. Be- cause of instructions received through band practice. many of the members are playing in dance orchestras or entering army bands, where they are doing work of professional caliber. The warm feeling which the music creates at all school functions is indicative of the value of the Band and the high esteem which the students of Everett High ac- cord to this outstanding musical organization. Our Crimson eleven was considerably stronger than the record indicates. The fact that captain Frank Guiliano, Barry Gilded. Harry DeAngelis, Stanley LeFave, and Louis Simonelli were chosen to play on the Suburban All-Stur football team in Salem on December 3, 1950, adds substantial strength to the statement. An actual picture of the strength of the team can be revealed by a brief review of the season. We opened against the State Champion. Weymouth, a terrific assign- ment. Sixteen points were chalked up by the enemy before we gathered our forces. The second half was a truer gauge of the merits of the two teams. Everett scored once and lost two other scores through penalties, while Weymouth scored on a sixty yard breakaway run. Although Weymouth dominated the first half. Everett ruled the second half. The final score was 22-6. Our next opponent, Somerville. defeated us by a score of 27-6. The initial victory of the season, 26-14 over Salem, sparked our warriors. Lynn Classical set the team back 20-0 at Manning Bowl, but the two following victories, over Medford 18-0 and Mulden Catholic 32-0, more than evened matters. The crucial Malden game, another defeat 7-6, was a heartbreuker for the Crim- son led 6-0 up to the final two minutes. Brockton, always CI headliner, was lucky to return to their Shoe City with a 13-13 deudloEk. On Thanksgiving Day we met our traditional rival, Chelsea, and defeated them by a score of 29-0. Our class well may be proud of the 1950 Crimson. a team that was at the top in courage and sportsmanship. To open the 1951 basketball season, Everett won a brilliant victory over Revere by a 20 point margin. Fred Arthur was high scorer in this game with seventeen points to his credit. The next win was over a strong Malden quintet, which tried persistently to turn the Crimson tide but went down to deteut by six points. Chelsea was the next victim of cm inspired Everett team. In the two games with Lowell, the honors were divided with one win for each team. Everett was unsuccessful against Mediord, Quincy and Somerville tectms, the last two of which qualified for the Tech Tourney. Donald Whitehouse was high scoxer for the season, ending with a total oi 131 . points. Fred Arthur was a close second with a total of 129 points. Walter Seward honored Everett by being chosen as a forward of the Greater Boston League. Because the bleachers at the high school were condemned as unsafe, all home games were played at the Everett Recreation Center. Although the team did not win all of the games, Mr. Putnam did win the effec- tion of his boys for his leadership and his building of the things that are of enduring value, such as sportsmanship and character. 1he members of the 1951 basketball team are as follows: Frederick Arthur. Ger- ald MacDonald, Richard H111, Arthur McCarthy, Rocco Riccicxrdi, Walter Seward. Donald Whitehouse, William Brownlie, Robert Shaw, Robert Iohnstone, Robert McLean. ; The results of the games were as follows: Everett 56 .. The graduation of such great stars as Bobby Hill, 100 yard State Champion and Richie Cumpagnoni. a great half-miler, left two pairs of shoes hard to fill. Last fall when Uncle Sam took Co-Captczin Bob Lucien into active service, another sure five point getter was lost. The 1951 season will mark the first time since 1935 that an Everett High baseball team has played in its own stadium. As the season begins, Couch Drugone predicts that he will have a strong pitching staff: but how the team itself will do depends on the necessary replacements he can find to take the place of the men who have graduated. Walter Seward is our ace pitcher. Last year, he made the Hearst All Star team that played in the Yankee Stadium. Ed Kitchen. who last year showed signs of making the grade, Ron Gundetson. Carmen Frederico. and Lawrence Muzzie are other candidates for the pitching staff. On the receiving end. we have Mel Ragucci. a senior, and Robert Knowlton. a junior. At first base the only returning lettermcm is Lawrence Vozella. Other intielders are Barry Gilded, William Caramauicu. Roy Temple. and Basil Napolitcno. Captain Vincent Iandolo will hold down the short stop position. Vincent had a great year last season. batting well over 400. Sal DeAngelo is the only veteran in the outfield. The team has shown good spirit and ability, and with the untried sophomores coming up, it should give a good account of itself in the league.
