I , a ? l , 119 MEMOR IE8 Va 40 a Don't think you have finished a race because you receive a diploma. In reality this pre- tentious document is merely a permit to begin a new lap in the race you have been running for years. A diploma is not a certihcate of retirement from the inconvenience of required study. It is simply a passport which will allow you to go to new fields of experience, pro- vided you will work your way. MARTIN G. SANBORN Headmaxter You have accomplished one important step in your progress toward fulfilling the demands of life. chceforth, let your words, thoughtsr and deeds so reflect the ideals and attitudes in- dicative of an efficient personality that you will be an inspiration to your neighbor, a source of joy to your family, an asset to your community. and a value unto yourself. Let truth, love, honor, and courtesy dominate the patterns of your conduct; and may success be your reward. CIHRIJ'S Ii. MANNING v4 II ignnnr $tuh2nta The members of the senior class. the editorial staff, and the faculty are pleased to extend their congratulations to this group of students who by conscientious effort have attained an honor rating of 3.5 or better over a period of three successive years in this school . While this group represents the largest number ever to be included in an honor group. it is felt that a few more may be added at the end of the fourth marking period As in years past, the members of this group will receive gold medals at graduation as a reward for their excellent work. The members of the honor group as of the end of the third quarter are as follows: IRENE GINSBERG GRACE O,BRIEN PASQUALE SANTILLI DEXTER ATKINSON IDA MACLEOD EMMA Moccm INEZ MANUEL R051: CAFASSO FREDA KATZ SYLVIA MILLxKEN JOSEPH FICARRA DOROTHY MCLEAN GASPAR SACHETTA ESTHER SANTER EDITH GANGEMI W INXFRED DAVIS Rum GOLDMAN HELEN MCLEISH STUART MILES ROSE OTERI ANDREW VINCHESE 74 MARJORIE PAULDING ROBERT SUPPLE JEAN ROWELL EDITH BLOOM MYER BUYARSKY JOSEPH POPIEL HELEN THOMPSON VVILLIAM MCLAUGHLIN MICHAEL PARISI MICHAEL TENAGLIA ANNA TRISCHITTA hiatnry mi 1112 011mm mi 19411 As freshmen the class of 1940 was under the leadership of Gaspar Sachetta, president of the Parlin Cooperative Government Association; Xt'illiam Landry, vice president, and Peter Mer- enda. secretary-treasurer. This group of otficers with the assistance of large and ahIe committees ran several success- ful afternoon socials and assemblies while in the Parlin Junior High School. Soon after the class entered the Everett Senior High School as sophomores, they elected as their class otficers Gaspar Sachetta, president; PasquaIe Santilli, vice president ; Jeanne Conners, secretary; and james Cotter. treasurer. Robert MacGregory, Jean Rowell. and tYinifred Davis represented the class in the School Council. In its sophomore year the Class of 1940 ran the first suctessful sophomore evening dance in the history of Everett High. The sophomore enrollment in the various clubs of the school was very large. As sophonmres the class of 19-10 was represented in the prize speaking contest by Gertrude Moore and Gaspar Sachettu. Both gave commendable accounts of themselves. Gaspar Sachetta represented the class in the annual Boston College Prize Debate. John Cumerford. Fred Burnham, Daniel Frazier, Mario Gizmelli. and Angelo Lepore m' the Class of 1940 received letters for outstanding work on the gridiron as sophomores. Among the sophumore tracksters were tYilliam Mzthillan, Peter Merenda. and Stuart Miles, On the hasehall team Louis DiSahatino, Carl johnson. jack Comerford, Howard Brosseau, and Edward Fitzpatrick were outstanding as sophmnores. tYilfred DeRosa, Jack Cnmerfurd, Louis DiSalJatiuo, and Carl Johnson were promising sophomores 0n the basketball team. Marion Stiekney, John Hill, Arthur Barisano, Mary Ahhene, Arthur Butler, tViIliam Cmnphell. Peter Merenda, Grace O'Brien. Robert MacGregory, tt'illiam Days. George Memishian, james Cotter, jean Rnwell. Jeremiah Snow. Chester Barringtom and Eileen Blakeney. Few sophomure Classes enjoyed n more successful year than the sophomore class of 19-10. As juninrs, the class of 1940 showed remarkable ability in several of the activities under- taken by the school that year. The success enjoyed by the junior class of 1940 was the result of an intelligent selection of its leaders, the strenuous eHorts on the part of Miss Anne G. Hi to better the class, and the fine cooperation on the part of the entire class. The junior class oHicers were Gaspar Sachetta, president; Pasquale Santilli, Vice president; Jeanne Connors, secretary; and Peter Merenda, treasurer. These officers did a time job of admin- istering the affairs of their class in the junior year. Representing the class of 1940 in the School Council were Jean Rowell, tX'inifrerl Davis, Alma Anderson, and Robert MacGregory. In the early part of the year, the junior c1355 sponsored a dance that might well boast of the largest attendance at any of the dances held in the school that year, In May the class promoted one of the finest Junior Fronts run in Everett High in recent years. The Prom was held in the high school gymnasium amid lavish Oriental decorations, gayety, and laughter that will be long remembered by those attending. This year the practice of presenting council-sponsored assemblies, which have proved so popular in the past, was continued. Thus the stu- dent body received additional cultural and educational opportunities beyond the regular curriculum. Another important achievement of the council during the present year was the 0b- taining from the Stadium Commission of better seats for students at football games. The manner in which the student body reacted to the responsibility involved in such a privi- lege more than justified the council's efforts. In April the council had the unusual privilege of holding the convention of the Eastern Division of the Associated Body of Student Councils of Massachusetts in its own school. A large number of representatives from the member schools attended, and the ensuing discussions and speeches made the occasion a mutually profitable and enjoyable one for all those present. At the time of its organization it was felt that there must be many students de- sirous of gaining additional knowledge in the field of science. Its continued popularity ever since has more than justified its creation. Monthly meetings were held throughout the year. The programs at these gather- ings were widely varied, having in Common only some definite relationship to science. At some, educational and construrtive motion pictures portraying some aspect of science were shown; at others, various club members presented simple scientific demonstrations; at still others, the pupils had an opportunity to become familiar with the chemistry of candy-making. The club also cooperated with the Christmas Cmnmittee in raising funds for the Christmas Baskets. Consequently the mnnthly meetings combined discussions of various outstanding works in the held of liter- ature, with social gatherings. In addition, the club members were encouraged to avail themselves of every possible outside opportunity to become more familiar with great liter ature. At Christmas time the girls in this group continued the custom of making attractive scrapbooks to be presented to the XVhidden Memorial Hospital. They also contributed to the Christmas Basket Fund. Another important activity of the club was the gift of several worthwhile books to the library. Sixty-hve hundred such groups exist throughout forty-six states and have on their membership rolls over two hundred thousand high school boys. The major purpose of this organization is character building Membership in it is considered a valuable asset, not only because of the prohtahle training the boys receive individually, but also hecause 0f the united bond of triendship anmng its members. The Hi-Y program is a comprehensive one, including many topics of special sigui- hczmce to high school students: Among these are such subjects as educational advance 1 ment, vocational guidance, leisure time projects, standards of personal conduct, social hygiene. racial and religious tolerance. and good sportsmanship. At many of its meetings qualified speakers address the eluh on various topics of vital e interest. after which the meetings are thrown open for questions and discussion. In this i way the members have an excellent opportunity to express and exchange views and to formulate opinions based upon adequate evidence. Other meetings are conducted in the form of panel discus 'nns. Since these are me tirely in the hands of the boys themselves. they do much tn stimulate initiative and lead- ership. t During the past year the Hi-Y was privileged to hear many interesting speakers. Some of these were high school instructors from snrrtmmling towns; others were students from nearby colleges. As a result the members came into contact with many different points of View. After the graduation of this group the 61th was allowed to 1apse in 1937 and remained dormant until an incessant demand among the students resulted in its reorganization in the spring of 19391 The club now constitutes one of the most enthusiastic groups in the school. Some of the activities in which its members participate are skeet shooting, which is a shot-gun target game; fishing trips to many of the best trout streams in the state: and the propagation of fish and game, which are subsequently released in the streams and woods of our vicinity. The members also make artificial lures for fishing and develop skill in bait casting and Hy casting. the two most sporting methods of takingr fish. At the meetings of the Club, which are held twice monthly. members are required to present origina1 papers covering their investigation and research into various phases of hunting and fishing. Thus they gain important knowledge of really practical value. One of the outstanding annual events on the Spm'tsmcn's Chih calendar is the Fathers and Sons Banquet, held this year during January. The feature of the evening was an address by Mr. Henry Ahliut president of the National Skeet Shooting Associa- tion, who traced the development of skeet from its earliest beginnings 0n the nun'sh in W'est Everett to its present status as u nutionahy popular sport. The club is fortunate in having as its director Mr. Lenox B1 Putnam, a true sports- mzm in every sense of the word.
