WORKING HARD ALL THE TIME IN ROOM A yearbook has a great sentimental value to many people. But to the 1977 Archives staff it holds much more than that. The 1977 Archives staff worked very hard putting together this special book. Every member of the staff devoted much of their time and ideas to take pictures and to make sure that the layouts and copies were right to meet the deadlines. They also worked hard on encouraging the sales by making posters and special announcements during the November sales campaign. Each and every member of the staff added their personal touch to the events that made the special memories for the times of your life. The 1977 Archives staff owes a great many thanks to Mr. James Faulkner the best advisor, whom gave a great deal of his time, patience and help to entire staff. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Nancy Cusack who assisted us in the yearbook class. Much appreciation and gratitude goes to both of them from everyone. The parade followed, led by die King and Queen candidates and their courts. The game was soon on it's way and off to the highlights of the evening during halftime when they announced King and Queen John Connell and Cathy Taylor, Prince and Princess Earvin Johnson and Pam Parks. The senior court was Scott Warriner and Janet Gray, the junior court was Tom Sessions and Teri Downs, and the sophomore court was Preston Smith and Cyndy Weinman. The senior wrapped it up again this year by taking first place in the judging of the floats. The sophomores took second place and the juniors took third place. The evening of October 15, 1976 couldn't have been a better evening for the Everett Vikings as they ended it by joining in on the warm and exciting dance celebrating their victory of 21-15 over Warren Towers. Among the other activities were the football stand concessions and a dance in which you had to bring two cans of food for admission. They filled over 100 baskets with potatoes, canned goods, and a turkey. Students then volunteered to take them to the needy families throughout the day. Miss Christenson was said to be one of the most dedicated and sincere people to hit the Lansing School District. No one will argue with that. Before retiring in June of 1975, she was Assistant Principal from the time she came here from Old Everett which is now Everett Elementary. She was always efficent and well organized as you could tell by how smoothly the Annual Presentation of Roses went year after year ir which she organized and put together for her girls. Indeed a great lady has been lost. The seniors started off the game showing the juniors who was boss on the field. The final score of 32-14 was no indication of how bad the juniors actually took a stomping. The juniors never really had a chance as the seniors drove to the goal line immediately, but turned the ball over with no score. The juniors 1st offensive series came up empty handed also. The seniors soon proved to be the more experience and powerful team, as they burst to a 26-0 lead and took die game 32-14. What do these name all have in common? They are our exchange students. Katrine is from Norway, Kaija is from Finland, Monika is from Switzerland and Thomas is from Germany. We asked the four exchange students if they were enjoying their stay here at Everett and it was a unanimous YES. Each student is studying exactly what they want to study and they all agreed that Everett is much easier than their own schools. One question we asked of them was what was their favorite American food. Thomas and Monika both like steak and Kaija enjoys milkshakes. Katrine says that she likes everything so much that she just couldn't choose only one. When they were asked if, they had only one thing that they could take home with them, what would it be? We got a variety of answers. Monika wanted to take home snow. But is very happy to take home her memories of her stay here. Kaija wants to take home milkshakes and our snow and cold weather. Katrine couldn't decide and Thomas, well Thomas would like to take home our cheerleaders and football equipment. The exchange students will be going back to their own home during the summer. We hope that they can take back happy memories of their stay here and that they have a pleasant trip home. When you are dying of thirst or hunger it's the Honor Society who provides all the good things at the concession stands. The Honor Society is a very busy group of people. In November they sponsor the Powder Puff football game, and the Thanksgiving project, which provides food for the needy familys of our community. In the spring they have a blood drive. The Honor Society also has an exchange day. This is where all the Honor Societies in the CAC, exchange students for one day. You could hear those shouts from both sides of the court during the game, but in the end it was us, The Everett Vikings , who took the Class A State Championship. Our Vikings won a 62-56 game against Birmingham Brother Rice on March 27, 1977. The game wasn't easy for either team and we were really sweating when there was only five and a half minutes left and we trailed by seven points. By this time Brother Rice had settled into a four corner stall, which they thought could stop the Viking team. They were wrong, and the only thing that kept them in the game was a 47 foot shot fired at the buzzer by Brother Rice All-Stater Kevin Smith. This tied the score and the game went into three minutes overtime. The Vikings never gave up and they went on to win the game with a 62-56 victory. i i I r I f I 48 TOP LEFT: Cathy Taylor gave Karen Balasses some words of hope when the going got rough. STANDING; Coach The 1977 basketball season was definitely the year of the Everett Vikings. The Vikings ended the season with a fantastic 27-1 record. The Vikings only defeat came in February at Jenison Fieldhouse against cross-town rival Eastern, 70-62. This loss only caused Everett to work harder and gain control, thus helping the Vikings to turn the table and gain revenge by beating Eastern, 63-41 in the districts. The Vikings defeated Sexton in the district finals. This district win was Everett's fourth district title in four years. After winning the district the Vikings overcame Howell, (93-32) and Battle Creek (64-44) in regionals, and gained their third regional title. Next came quarterfinal action and another Viking victory over Ypsilanti, 86-57. In this year's semi-final match-up Everett squeezed by Saginaw, 48-40. The high point of the season and the game to be long remembered was Everett against Birmingham Brother Rice for the Class A State title. Everett has a lot to look forward to next year with Juniors Dale Beard, Tony Daniel and Bruce Fields returning. These three juniors averaged 19.8 pts. a game combined. Senior transfer Jaimie Huffman had an average of 8.3 pts. a game and was a big plus to the Viking Squad this season. The only disappointing thing Everett saw in '77 was the loss of seniors (and captains of the '77 squad) Earvin Johnson, Paul Dawson, and Larry Hunter, While this three-some was at Everett they led the Vikings to a 72-5 record. 50 Vikings on the Move. Everett's junior varsity shined this year losing only six of their games. Three of them within the last seconds to Waverly, Grand Ledge, and Eastern by one and two point margins. They were faced with a lot of pressure from many sellout crowds, but they pulled through most every time. The strongest player seemed to be Bob Rogowski shooting 57.8% from the field and 43.9% at the line. Putting up a strong offense was also Reggie Royals goal shooting, 48.6% from the field and 34.2% at the line. Brian Sanders and Kim Jones also put forth their efforts for a fine season; and with the help of Preston Smith racked up many points for our team. Kim Jones missed five games but he led the team with 66.0% from the floor, and 52.1% from the line. All of these fine players will add to our varsity squad next year. There were a couple of big dissapointments, those being dropped games in the Pre-District and the semifinal game in the Diamond Classic to Jackson 3-2 and Waverly 4-1 respectively. Another high spot during the year was that Everett placed three players on the All-Conference team, Tim Dunham, Dean Hartley, and Fred Smith. Dunham, Hartley, and Smith, along with Jim Demorest and Ken Dudley were named to the All-Metro team. While Dave Hutchins, Mike Mulvaney, and Wendy Trobridge received All-Conference honorable mention honors. Along with being All-Conference and All-Metro, pitcher Dean Hartley who posted a 6-0 record during the course of the season was an Ail-State honorable mention pick. Tim Dunham was voted most valuable player for 1976 and had the teams leading batting average, which stood at .348 at seasons end. What are student teachers? Student teachers are students from colleges who come to Everett to have a chance to teach while they go to school to become teachers. Mr. Ron Whitmore is their fearless leader. He assigns them to a certain class and then they all get together and discuss with other teachers how to handle classroom problems and students. During the first semester of school we had eight student teachers. Their names are: Mrs. Cusack, Mrs. Lemke, Mrs. Gayon, Mr. Hicks, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Thursby, Mr. Jarvis and Mr. Anderson. All of these student teachers had to leave Everett on Nov. 19. We all hated to see them go, but many of them said they'd be coming back soon to see us. Student teachers gather around at lunch for a discussion. Perm. Subs. Permanent Substitutes Jim Hunt and Laura Siebold. This is Ms. Siebolds first year at Everett but this is Mr. Hunts second year. Some of the things that a permanent subsitute has to do is take over a classroom when a teacher must be excused, or if the teacher is ill for the day. Jim Hunt and Laura Siebold not only help teach but they both help coach a sport here at Everett. Jim Hunt is the J.V. Wrestlers coach and Laura Siebold is the J.V. Girls Basketball coach. The 1976-77 Varsity Basketball Squad had a hard and rewarding year. They started off by taking 6 ribbons for cheerleading and mount skills, a ribbon for pom pon routine, and a ribbon for skit performance. All this lead to the success of a 1st. place National Trophy at U.S.C.A. Camps All American. This 1st. place trophy entitled them to compete in the Grand National Championships with 96 other champion squads throughout the United States. The U.S.C.A. Grand National Cheerleading Competition was held at the Civic Center on August 20th and 21st. The outcome of our girls was a place among the Top Twenty Cheerleading Squads in the United States and a place among the Top Ten in pom pon routine. These girls have performed at many clubs and organizations throughout the year including cheering the University of Michigan vs. Navy football game before 104,000 people on Sept. 25, 1976. These National Champion Cheerleaders are: Juniors: Martie Baker and Karen BalassOs. Seniors: Kathy Earley, Pam Parks, Lori Sandefer, Sue Smith, Cathy Taylor and Jill Whitecraft. Of course, you can't have a successful squad without having a fantastic coach, Mrs. Sharon Pettit. With the guidance of our Junior Class Advisor, Mr. Davis, the class started out the year by electing its first male officer. It got things underway with everyone working on the fall homecoming float. The float came in second. We were together as sophomores and with our spirit and ambitions we are together as juniors. This is the kind of catastrophe a person can't ignore. There goes that door again, it always slams on things. And I have to get to my locker before the first bell rings. What a way to start the morning -I just broke my pencil lead. The way this day is heading, I should have stayed in bed. Already it is lunchtime-school lunches for us all. And now we all are heading for the lines of heartburn hall. I forgot about the exam that we're having in Business Ed. So I'm really cramming for it, while I'm wishing I were dead. The last bell has finally rung, through the bustle and the fuss. By the time I reach the front door, I'll be told I missed the bus. Not only did I have to w alk to the beach for the first time in 5 years, but I was sure I'd never find another car w ith all that sporty style. Then I walk by this beautiful, and I mean beautiful, new Cutlass 442. It had a slant-back grille, a big old competition stripe, and all the extras —super stock wheels, raised white-letter tires, bucket scats, 5-spccd transmission. I stuck Rocket V-8. On top of everything, it's an Oldsmobile. Well. I thought they stopped making sporty street machines like that when they stopped making beach movies. But that little ride made me a believer again. I said to myself, “Man—they built one for me.” And who knows-442 might even improve my standing with Sharon. Hi But that's a whole other story. W ♦Available options. “I thought sporty fun cars were gone forever. But the new Olds 442 renewed my faith.Yeah-They built one for me” my head inside to get a better look at the gauges w hen the guy that owns it comes by. I thought, “uh-oh—here comes a knuckle sandwich. But instead he asks me if I w-anted to take it around the block. It was unreal. That FE2 Rallyc suspension gave me that good old cruisin' fcclin’. And the guy told me it was even available with a 403—that’s the new lighter weight 209 Vinces-Coney Island 3631 S. Tracing the pathway of your ascent. Feeling the joy of accomplishment. Recalling the friends you met on the way As onward you journeyed with each new day. Then lifting your gaze from this happy sight You look up to a mountain bathed in light And feel the urge to go forward and seek Another pathway to reach that peak. One you have conquered before in dreams. What does it matter how far it seems? Just as you found in your previous climb. You can do it by taking one step at a time! This year has gone by so fast, but so many memories have been left behind for us to remember. The staff and I hope we have captured some of these moments for you here in this yearbook. I w'ould like to thank our wonderful advisor, Mr. Faulkner for all his guidance, patience, and understanding through out the year. Also for his wonderful smile diat kept the staff smiling even through the toughest deadline. A warm thanks to Mr. Hicks for all his extra time he spent on getting pictures ready for their pages. And thanks to you, for making it possible to fill the pages in this book. Patricia White
