The brick Viking. now in iTs sec- ond quarTer-cenTury, has finally come of age as a Class A school. BuT as wiTh mosT aspiring youngsfers reaching ma- TuriTy, EvereTT was noT wiThouT growing pains. OuT- side The brand-new labs and modern classrooms There was mud . . . and plenTy oT iT. PleasanT, buT found rough going The remainder of The schedule. AfTer being defeaTed in The Homecoming game by Mason. The Team suffered from The loss of key veTeran players and sank To The cellar of The CapiTal CircuiT. Sandy Powell and Ron Grimwood reigned over The foofball homecoming, one of The lasT To be held aT The old EvereTT field. The STarlighTers provided music for The annual homecoming dance in The gym afTer The game. PaT STevens placed TirsT in seven meeTs To pace The EvereTT cross counTry Team during l959. PaT also placed Third aT The sTaTe meeT aT YpsilanTi. The senior play, The LiTTle Dog Laughed , was presenTed in November, wiTh Jo Carrol Space play- ing The lead acfress. They said iT couldn'T be done, buT They were wrong, for l800 specTaTors acTually braved The sea of mud and ruined shoes To view The firsT home bas- keTball game in The new. vasT EvereTT gymnasium. Cagers Win Co-Championship The Viking cagers, facing a sTrong Mason Team, made a splendid debuT in The new gym. Playing one of The greaTesT games ever played by an EvereTT five. The Vikings upseT The Bulldogs while forward Bill Powers sank baskefs from The righT corner like iT was habiT forming. The Team wenT on To win eighT sTraighT home games and capTure a Tie for The CapiTal CircuiT championship wiTh.HolT. lT was The firsT year of com- peTiTion wiTh major Class A schools. and The close of The regular season Tound EvereTT posTing a won 2, losT 2 record againsT Class A Teams, scoring wins over Lansing EasTern and Owosso. ln The firsT game of The Class A disTricT Tourna- menT, which was held in The Viking gym, EvereTT chalked up anoTher win againsT The EasTern Quakers buT losT in The finals as SexTon puT on a show of power To subdue The Vikings. Joan Sprague and Bill Powers were honored by being elecTed queen and king of The firsT baske+baII homecoming in The new gym. OTher members of The courT were iuniors, Gloria TwiTchell and Ralph Koreng sophomores, HarrieT Anderson and Jack Har- rison. And They did iT again! The TaculTy all-sTars downed a sTrong senior squad To sTreTch The faculfy winning sTreak To TwenTy sTraighT games wiThouT a defeaf. Jim was capTain of a Team ThaT compiled a 5-7 record and pulled a major upseT The lasT meeT of The season. dumping Owosso, 28 To I3. Many new clubs and organizaTions appeared as The year progressed. The TirsT Biology Club was organized under The direcTion oT Mr. Banks, Mr. Baker headed The Model Airplane Club. and The PhoTography Club, wiTh iTs new darkroom. was ad- vised by Mr. STrickler. OTher newly-organized clubs aT EvereTT included Hi-Y, French, and LaTin.
