On this page will be seen as progressive a group of administrators as can be found in any school in Michigan. Some achievements in very recent years that can be attributed to our superintendent and board of education are a new addition to the grade school division, a playground now in use by the children of the grade school, a new athletic field, and complete plans for a new grade school building on South- gate Street between Fenton and Maplehill. JOHN K. COSGROVE Superintendent 3 'F pi Senior High Student Council Mforking along hand in hand with the top administration on the opposite page are Mr. Alford, our genial principal, and the Student Council, which serves as an effective liaison group between the administration and the student body. Mr. Alford performs a great number of everyday transactions which, al- though not always noticed, are absolutely neces- sary to the effective functioning of a high school. One of the highlights of Student Council activities this school year is the raising of money to finance the lighting of the new ath- letic field. Weekly meetings of Council and cabinet are held to insure closer cooperation between student body and administration. CECIL H. VARSITY CLUB EDDIE SPRAGUE CHARLES SWEENEY President l The school-wide famous Varsity Club offers much that is interesting and exciting to boy athletes at Everett. In order to become a member, a boy has to have earned a major letter in some major sport. Each year finds many new members being initiated into the organization, which has sponsored many fine athletic events for its members. One main event which has attracted a great deal of attention to this club is the promotion of several boxing matches in intramural sports. Members of the club never fail in speaking well of their organization when it can do so well as it has so far. Under the leadership of Coach Sweeney, the club looks to future years with confidence as athletes continue to join the organization and help build the future men of America. GERALD GIZA A dvisor Secretary Again this year our cross country team was quite suc cessful. Our cross-country team this year held four meets. The load this year was carried by Ed Osenga and Jack Crouch, our main run ners, who did a very fine job Although we lost all four meets, we had a very fine group of boys who tried very hard and are learning fast. A big share of the credit goes to Mr. Strickler, who did a very fine job in coaching the boys. He gave much of his time and patience in building a team that will really go places in the future. The Girls' League has had a most successful year under the leader- ship of Madelyne Quinn, President. At the September meeting all newcomers to our school were introduced and welcomed into the League. On january sixteenth Presentation of Roses was made to members of the january graduating class. Additional highlights of the year included two annual dances, the Fall Frolic and Spring Fever. This year's program also included a Sweetheart Ball the day after Valentine's Day. Another annual event is the Mothers' Tea held dur- ing May. At the final meeting of the year the girls of the june gradu- ating class will be honored. Every girl who is regularly enrolled in the high school is auto- matically a member of the League. All women on the faculty are also members. The purposes of the League as stated in its Constitution are as follows: l. To promote unity among the girls. 2. To develop social activities and school efficiency. 3. To set higher standards of character, scholarship, service, loyalty, leadership, and health. 4. To give every girl of Everett an opportunity to know every other girl, and thus broaden her mind and sympathies. 5. To increase her sense of social responsibility to others, and to help make and keep social standards. 6. To develop intelligent leadership as well as leadership through the medium of group cooperation. 49 VIOLA BRANDT A dvisor ff'lXlF:lF:f!'I 1CDT MCIENCE Left to right: Back row, Richard Hein, Treasurer, Richard Eavey, Dick Selleck, Lester Beyer, Presi- dent, Don Hein, Don Petersen, Don Maynard. CLUEJ The Science Club of 1946-47 received the privilege of being a charter member of the Junior Academy of Science, which held its first meeting at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. They took their lunch and made a conducted tour of the campus, after which a meeting was held. A number of other science clubs from all over Michigan were also at this meeting. Movies and a demonstration experiment on liquid air were shown. The Science Club contains a membership of twenty-two, and according to our Constitu- tion, each person must have a project having to do with science. YVe hope to have one large rock collection to show when the junior Academy of Science meets at Michigan State College. We also hope to have some col- lections of photography. Many of the smaller pictures in this manual are products of our club, of which we feel justly proud. Thus we go forward to ever better photog- raphy techniques and deeper understanding of practical science. Rm LESTER STRICKLER Advisor sl iking Staff Continuing with the fine tradition set by last year's Viking, this year has seen a top- notch paper put out by a top-notch staff and advisor. Not the only fine new additions that were added this year were a separate sports page and a special section for each home room. The staff had to face the difficult problem of having a broken press, thus forcing the sub-letting of the printing to outside sources. This unhappy situation did not hinder the members, though: they were still able to put out one of the finest Vikings in the school's history.
