Indiana State Teachers College University of Pittsburgh Supervising Principal of Schools EDUCATION AND LIFE Education in a broad sense is the development of all the powers of an individual. There are two kinds of education—that obtained from schools and that obtained from the experiences of life. A person who is progressive takes advantage of both kinds of education. The education obtained from schools is a preparation for adult life in a democracy. It so enriches our experiences that every boy and girl is provided an opportunity to acquire the good habits, the skills, and the moral stamina required to meet life’s demands. The School of Experience is never out! Experience teaches us that each one must earn his place by doing his part; that nothing is worth doing that does not help others; that human progress throughout the ages has depended on people who did more than their share. May your future be a life of health, happiness, and prosperity. Page twelve ASSISTANT SACHEM D. RAYMOND MACK, B.S., M.ED. Indiana State Teachers College University of Pittsburgh Principal of High School THE LIFE WORTH LIVING There is a life that is worth living and that life is the honest and useful life cleansed by devotion to an ideal. There is a battle worth fighting—a battle for justice and equality: to make our Community, State, and Nation free in act as well as in name, to break the Isms that strangle real liberty and to keep them broken, to cleanse, so far as in our power lies, the foundations of our national life from political, commercial, and social corruption, and to teach our sons, and daughters, by precept and example, the honor of serving such a country as America. That is work worthy of the finest manhood and womanhood. My sincerest wish is that the Class of 1948 live the type of life that will be commendable in whatever community they may live. So it is with this reservation on which each of us has set his tepee for the past many moons. On entering this reservation in 1944, we knew that after many moons a new tribe would come to take our place on the reservation, and again we would be forced to seek a new hunting ground. During these four years the maidens and braves of our tribe have tried hard to keep peace with other tribes of the reservation and with the older Warriors. We have presented various pow-wows and have readily joined in our share of cooperation with pow-wows of other tribes. Nor did we fail to learn when we were confronted with our share of studies. Thus, you see that it is time for this, Our Senior Tribe of the Everett High School Reservation,” to take up his wigwram, to make new trails toward a new hunting ground, and to say Aughtha.” Page eighteen BARNES, MILDRED I. Gazing back on twelve departed years, Our goal we’ve reached is worth those pains and tears. Remembering teachers dear who tried to make us learn, Finally giving small rewards to those who earned. Those mischievious pranks we played when we were small, And for these pranks the teacher punished all. Although we hung our ladder to a celestial star, Our goal we’ve reached and proud of this we are. So to our school we bid a fond farewell And hold a memory of a school we love so well. The three moons which we have spent on this reservation were short. During this time, we have accomplished much. Our pow-wows have been many. When other tribes threatened to conquer that which was ours, six of our scouts were sent to defend our football title. Then later two brave scouts, were sent to help defend our reservation’s basketball title, and recently we have sent three of our bravest warriors to defend our baseball title. Thirteen of our braves and maidens put on their war paint and presented a masque, Mistakes at The Blakes,” at our annual pow-wow around the council fire. With these tribal memories to keep in mind, we are looking forward to becoming the Senior Tribe of 1949. Page thirty-eight R. Akers T. Antes E. Bennett D. Bequeath M. Bernhard M. Border J. Browell R. Last year we sent ahead our scouts to prepare our reservations and clear away the land for our wigwams. This year, as well as last, we have been more or less learning to use our tools as willed to us by our fellow warriors. At the end of this year we will really belong to this reservation for the remaining two years since we will receive our rings which will make us Junior Tribesmen. Like our redskins, who have set out before us to seek a new home, we, too, will prepare ourselves for the new hunting ground. Page forty-four C. Akers C. Avcy R. Barton J. Beck J. Bcegle J. Black J. This year we are scouts sent to inspect the reservation and set up our tepees on this new hunting ground. We were initiated into Everett High School Reservation on September 3, 1947. Most of our year has been spent in learning our special codes, our sign language, and the art of making nature and her contemporaries useful. Next year we will enter some of our braves into battle and contests. We are preparing for 1951 when we, like our Senior Tribesmen, will leave our reservation in search of a new hunting ground. At last I’ve reached the goal I’ve set, But I strive for glory yet. The Freshmen seemed so bright and gay, When looking at them—grades away, But soon I learned, to my surprise. The upper classmen were the guys. The Sophomores looked at us with pain; The Juniors’ look is pure disdain. The Seniors are kind and tolerant though, For we won’t bother them long, they know. A Freshman, it is fun to be, But now my goal I’ve changed you see; With work and study, I will gain, And have the upper classmen’s fame. Miss Cullen Everett High has its own school paper, the Parrot. This paper is published every six weeks and is sold at a cost of seventy-five cents for the entire six copies. Our Parrot” staff consists of fourteen members chosen from the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes. This group meets on Monday mornings during activity period to write about the news, sports, and gossip of the school. This year the Parrot eliminated all ads, but on that back page it has substituted a gossip sheet— a sheet read by all.” The annual Saint Patrick’s Day party was sponsored by this group. The floor show was the main attraction. The decorations were also quite beautiful. The annual Parrot” assembly was presented on January 16. Wallace Miller was the Master of Ceremonies and did a fine job introducing the members of their Variety Show.” Page sixty-three STUDENT COUNCIL Student Lawmakers” is a good name for the members of this club as it makes the rules by which the students must abide. Sixteen members hold their meetings every Tuesday morning in Mr. Mack’s office. These members are chosen by their classmates; each class elects four representatives. Some of the duties of this group are patroling the halls, making school laws, and sponsoring various parties. This year they sponsored a clean-up campaign which was won by Room 22A. To this group individual pencils were given as a reward. President .......... Vice President______ Secretary __________ Treasurer .......... Membership in this organization is the highest goal which a student of this school can obtain. It is not a local organization, but it is established in, many schools throughout the nation. The purpose of this organization is very well expressed in the following lines: The purpose of this organization shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of American secondary schools.” For the same organization the pledge is— As a member of the National Honor Society, I will do my best to live up to its ideals of character, scholarship, service, leadership, and citizenship.” I will strive not only to maintain the high standing I have gained, but will do my utmost to attain still higher aims.” In taking this pledge I understand that I am assuming a responsibility of leadership and example, and 1 will endeavor to serve without thought of personal glory, my school and my community.” Members arc chosen by a faculty committee composed of Mr. Mack, Mr. Sharpe, Miss Anis, Miss Taylor, and Miss Cullen. This committee reviews all possibilities sent in by the faculty and selects those persons who are eligible. New members are chosen from the Junior and Senior classes. Only those who are outstanding in scholarship, service, leadership, and character arc chosen each year to become members. Upon becoming a member, each person receives a certificate, a membership card, and a pin bearing the golden torch of honor and the letters—C, S, L, and S, which represent the four factors upon which membership is based. Old members are Leeland O’Neal, Joanne Fletcher, Betty Steach, and Eleanor Furry. Elected this year were Frances Taylor, Betty Trail, Annette Dunkle, Edna Mearkle, Beverly Flilden, and Wallace Miller. Page sixty-five DRAMATIC CLUB First Row—L. Robinette, D. Wakefoose, E. One of the main objects of the club was to provide graduating senior lettermen with sweater awards for their service in the school's sport program. Thus far, the club has succeeded in doing this by sponsoring various dances, boxing shows, and their one great annual event, the Freshman-Sophomore football game.
