D. RAYMOND MACK, B.S., M.Ed. Indiana State Teachers College University of Pittsburgh Principal of High School MESSAGE It is character that counts in a nation as in a man. It is a good thing to have a keen, fine intellectual development in a nation, to produce orators, artists, successful business men; but it is an infinitely greater thing to have those solid qualities which we group together under the name of character—sobriety, steadfastness, the sense of obligation toward one’s neighbor and one’s God, hard common sense, and combined with it, the lift of generous enthusiasm toward whatever is right. These are the qualities which go to make up true greatness. It is my sincere hope that the Class of 1947 will radiate this richness of character in whatever community they may live. Page nine

TARENCE G. WILL, B.S., M.Ed. University of Pittsburgh Supervising Principal of Schools REFLECTIVE THINKING Processes of instruction are unified in the degree in which they center in the production of good habits of thinking. While we may speak, without error, of the method of thought, the important thing is that thinking is the method of an educational experience. The essentials of method are therefore identical with the essentials of reflection. They are—first, that the pupil have a genuine situation of experience—that there be a continuous activity in which he is interested for his own sake; secondly, that a genuine problem develop within this situation as a stimulus to thought; third, that he possesses the information and makes the observations needed to deal with it; fourth, that suggested solutions occur to him which he shall be responsible for developing in an orderly way; fifth, that he have opportunity and occasion to test his ideas by application in order to make their meaning clear and to discover for himself their validity. I extend to the graduates of the class of 1947 my best wishes for a successful future. Page eight
