HIGHLIGHTS IN THE NEWS OF THE YEAH DEDICATION The Class of 1947 respectfully dedicates this Warrior to all persons ever associated with Everett High School who are now serving or who have served in the uniform of their country. FOREWORD In this volume we have tried to reproduce the scenes that will linger longest in our memories. High School has meant more to us than a daily routine of study. It has been the medium through which we have made lasting friendships and gained experience that will help us in later life. AS SENT TO PRESS BY THE SENIOR CLASS EVERETT HIGH SCHOOL EVERETT, PA. Joie Le Van - Editor La Rue Hitchens - Advisor Everett High, so true. How we all love you! And we're proud to say You belong to us always. EVERETT HIGH SCHOOL THE CASTLE Beneath a sky of royal blue Upon a hill our castle stands; Building a knighthood, brave and true, To venture into other lands. Daily she bears her shield of strength, And carries thoughts up mountain trails To heights unknown, until at length Able to bear the meanest gales. Beneath a sky of royal blue, Our memory will ever lie Within our royal castle true, Which bears the name of “Everett High.” By Doris Twigg Class of ’47 Page six BOARD OF EDUCATION ■ Mr. James G. WILL, B.S., M.Ed. University of Pittsburgh Supervising Principal of Schools REFLECTIVE THINKING Processes of instruction are unified in the degree in which they center in the production of good habits of thinking. While we may speak, without error, of the method of thought, the important thing is that thinking is the method of an educational experience. The essentials of method are therefore identical with the essentials of reflection. They are—first, that the pupil have a genuine situation of experience—that there be a continuous activity in which he is interested for his own sake; secondly, that a genuine problem develop within this situation as a stimulus to thought; third, that he possesses the information and makes the observations needed to deal with it; fourth, that suggested solutions occur to him which he shall be responsible for developing in an orderly way; fifth, that he have opportunity and occasion to test his ideas by application in order to make their meaning clear and to discover for himself their validity. I extend to the graduates of the class of 1947 my best wishes for a successful future. Page eight D. RAYMOND MACK, B.S., M.Ed. Indiana State Teachers College University of Pittsburgh Principal of High School MESSAGE It is character that counts in a nation as in a man. It is a good thing to have a keen, fine intellectual development in a nation, to produce orators, artists, successful business men; but it is an infinitely greater thing to have those solid qualities which we group together under the name of character—sobriety, steadfastness, the sense of obligation toward one’s neighbor and one’s God, hard common sense, and combined with it, the lift of generous enthusiasm toward whatever is right. These are the qualities which go to make up true greatness. It is my sincere hope that the Class of 1947 will radiate this richness of character in whatever community they may live. Page nine MR. H. First, we see Richard Sponsler and Vada Foor, who have just captured a notorious ring of gangsters with the help of Robert Bailey, who trailed along to get pictures for his paper “The Police Gazette.’’ They had very little proof of the guilt of these gangsters, but with the skill of a great lawyer, Charles Perrin, the group was found guilty and convicted. Chrissie Brockey, reporter on the “Daily Blah,” has written the latest news about some members of the class of ’47. It is as follows: Bobby “Suicide” Morral, owner of the “Hell Drivers,” suffered severe burns resulting from the daring act of driving his car through a hoop of flames. Ernest Young, a member of the “Hell Drivers”, will take Bobby’s place until he recovers. Donald Marshall, holder of the heavyweight title, will fight his opponent, Teddy Lewis, at Madison Square Garden next week. Joanne O’Neal with her famous horse “Tumbleweed” will appear in person at the “Capital” Theatre next week, along with a musical stage show, starring Dale Foor and his orchestra. Dale will introduce his new pianist, Betty McFarland. His vocalists are Eleanor Perrin, Phyllis Sponsler, and Joe King. Page twenty The “Ice Follies of 1957“ starring the team, Ina Diehl and Jack Sipes, will be held next week at “The Palace.” Lenora Ferrell and two friends, Geraldine Mellott and Grace Dibert, have returned from Paris, after completing their course in an art school there. Vaughn Foor, scientific farmer, with the help of his brother Dallas, and Lloyd Sollenbarger, has produced through many years of hard labor, a new kind of wheat that grows five feet high. They hope to perfect it even more. The first edition of “The Distinguished Visitor” written by Arlene McFarland, the rising novelist, will be published this month. Doris Twigg will make her debut next month. She has been seen quite frequently with the millionaire playboy, Duane Gochnour. Myron Steckman, world famous violinist, after a successful tour in the United States, will make his first appearance in London at a “Command Performance.” Dr. George Lehman left his hospital in care of his head nurse, Faye Bussard, and with his secretary, Vera Masciocchi, took a staff of nurses, Huldah Decker, Doris Redinger, Betty Rogers, and Betty Lou Foor to the South Pacific in order to help fight the malaria epidemic. Wanda Jay has just opened her beauty salon with assistants, Shirley Hoffman and Betty Clark, who are planning to buy a share in the business and enlarge the shop. Doris Avey and Velma Felton, partners in business, run close competition with their beauty salon on the same street. Our time machine now takes us to the airport, where a plane is warming up for a trip to Paris. The pilot of the plane is Howard Ruby, and the copilot is Sunshine Snyder. Acting as air-hostess is Phyllis Steckman. Aboard the plane is Violet Price, dress designer, who is going to Paris to sell some of her designs. Louella Pee is going along as her personal model. Also on the plane is Thelma Clingerman, a foreign correspondent, who is going to Paris to get details on a new weapon being developed by the world famous scientist, James Whisel and his assistant, Blair Swartzwelder. We now go to California’s seashore where we find Roy Bussard and his family enjoying their vacation in the “Land of Sunshine.” Roy is talking to Richard Mills, who is the life guard at the beach. Later that night, in a night club called “Lucky Dive,” we see Mary Shipley, the hat check girl, talking to Herbert Morral, who is now producing 1958 Buicks on a large scale. In the night club, going in and out of the tables selling cigarettes, cigars, and chewing gum, is the cutest little cigarette girl, La Rue Ross. Page twenty-one At the bar we see a sailor, Guy Robinson, who has just returned from Europe; he is talking to Don Stayer, who is relaxing after a hard day’s work on the railroad. Sitting at one of the tables are Roderic Deike, Guy Calhoun, and Lloyd Price, who own a partnership in the trucking business. With them are Sara Jane Foor, and Doris Felton, who are their secretaries. Entering at the door are Gladys Morse, Dona Riley, and Susan Ritchey, who have gone to California for a month of relaxation from their jobs. Mrs. Clyde Clark, the former Mary Lou Howser, who is now living in California, is making a success of her married life. She is reading a letter from Mrs. Bernard Calhoun, the former Vance Gordon, who is now living in Ohio. In her letter Vance said that Robert Beck is in charge of the construction of her new home. In Hollywood, two stenographers for Warner Bros. Studios are Doris Whisel and Betty Reed. They are well acquainted with many of the stars. Betty Prieto is a hair dresser in the studios. She gives the stars their coiffures for their pictures. As we leave Hollywood, we go to the University of Pennsylvania. On the faculty there, we see three members of the class of ’47. They are____ Joie Le Van, who is teaching her favorite subject, biology; Martha Mae Dibert, who now has a band of her own, teaching music; and Dorothy Stanley, in addition to being Dean of the University, teaching mathematics. Doris Von Stein, part-time nurse, and Don England, coach at the University, have planned a double wedding with Sarah Hershbarger and her fiance. Wilmer Eichelberger, just out of the Air Corps, is flying around in a new plane he bought from Duane Foor, who is now producing all types of aircraft in his factories. Now that our time machine has told us all these nice things, we will turn it off for another year. The publication of this paper is one of the main activities of the school, and is enjoyed by many faculty members, students and alumni of Everett High School. The Parrot staff consists of twenty-five members chosen from the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes. These students meet on Tuesday mornings during activity period to write about the news, sports and gossip of the school. Not only does the Parrot staff publish the school paper but it also joins in the social events of Everett High. Their greatest success this year was the Saint Patrick’s Day party. The members of the staff worked extremely hard on both the decorations and entertainment. The main attraction was the floor show. The Parrot staff entertained the faculty and student body in assembly on October 18 with a quiz program in the form of “Truth or Consequences.” First Row—Joe Stine, Donald Wakefoose, Doris Avey, Richard Mills, Wallace Miller, George Lehman, Madeline Laher, Vera Masciocchi, Annette Dunkle, Joie Le Van, Miss Cullen. The members are responsible for the discipline of the students and the appearance of the building. The members are chosen by their classmates. Each class elects four representatives. This makes a total of sixteen members. The Student Council meets each week in the Old Office. This year they drew up a new Constitution. In addition to hall patrol, the Student Council furnishes entertainment for the students. They sponsored the Hallowe’en party and the Valentine Dance. The Student Council sold Everett High School pennants in the school colors, maroon and white, to the students. In the spring, they sponsored a clean-up campaign and were responsible for an assembly program. Page forty-two NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society which was established in Everett High in 1944 is an honorary organization. Membership in this organization is the highest goal which a student of this school can obtain. It is not a local organization, but it is established in many schools throughout the nation. The purpose of this organization is very well expressed in the following lines: “The purpose of this organization shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of American secondary schools.” The pledge for the same organization is— “As a member of the National Honor Society, I will do my best to live up to its ideals of character, scholarship, service, leadership, and citizenship.” “I will strive not only to maintain the high standing I have gained, but will do my utmost to attain still higher aims.” “In taking this pledge I understand that I am assuming a responsibility of leadership and example, and I will endeavor to serve without thought of personal glory, my school and my community.” Members are chosen by a faculty committee composed of Mr. Mack, Mr. Sharpe, Mrs. Bartholomew, Miss Clark, and Miss Cullen. This committee reviews all possibilities sent in by the faculty, and selects those persons who are eligible. New members are chosen from the Junior and Senior classes. Only those who are outstanding in scholarship, service, leadership, and character are chosen each year to become members. Upon becoming a member, each person receives a certificate, a membership card, and a pin bearing the golden torch of honor and the letters— C, S, L, and S, which represents the four factors upon which membership is based. The old members are E. Perrin, G. Mellott, and M. Steckman. The new members are A. McFarland, J. Le Van, D. Stanley. F. Bussard, H. Ruby, C. Perrin, B. Steach, B. Gipe, J. Fletcher, E. Furry, and L. This was the story of a group of people traveling from New York to Montreal, whose bus broke down, and who sought shelter in a dilapidated old farm-house. It was discovered that one of the people in the house was a notorious gangster. Revealing the gangster proved to be quite a task. The atmosphere of suspense was held until the end and was retained only by the comical antics of some of the characters throughout the play. The cast did an A-l job on a play difficult to produce. For this Bible study instruction, the three groups, the Tri-Hi-Y, the Hi-Y, and the Junior Tri-Hi-Y, assembled in one class in the auditorium. Rev. Reiley conducted these meetings. Mr. Johns replaced Mr. Rhodes as advisor at semester time. OFFICERS President .......................... Duane Gochnour Vice President .................... The library keeps the most up-to-date and widely read books at the disposal of the students. One of the librarians works in the library nearly every period in the day. She helps select books, dates books and files cards. She is also responsible for the neatness of all articles connected with her work. The daily paper and numerous magazines are also found in the library at all times. These are also very beneficial to everyone. OFFICERS President ................................. This club was originated for the purpose of promoting fellowship among the wearers of the “E” and to further the interests of Everett High in interscholastic athletics as well as any other progressive athletic endeavor. The primary requirement for membership in this club is the winning of a varsity letter by participating in Athletics. New members undergo a voluntary initiation before they are admitted to the club.
