THE SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our nation has launched upon a tremendous armament program. This step is imperative in the face of conditions with which all of you are familiar. Arms alone, however, are not enough. We must at the same time mobilize our intellectual, moral, and spiritual resources. Here education is the crucial factor. Education is fundamental to the national defense against enemies both within and without. Our system of universal public education, constantly adapted to changing needs and problems, is the greatest common defense the American people have erected or can erect. It is the opportunity of your generation to carry this message to the American people by vigorous, concerted effort throughout the entire nation. It is of the utmost importance that this be done. Other demands for public funds make it increasingly difficult to finance education. Meanwhile, new problems confront the schools as the nation moves into a new period of world history. Therefore, learn and grow by assuming responsibility for your own and your neighbors' welfare. Self-governing people will make mistakes, but mistakes are often growing points in life, just as aches are growing pains with youngsters. The points of tension in civic life are usually the points at which growth is taking place. The community is merely a symbol of our larger self, and we cannot be at our best unless we contribute to the community welfare. Our first act is to assume responsibility for our own life and determine to make it radiate its influence in community life. The school and home are integral parts in the larger units of our welfare, that without good government, the school and home suffer. So tied together by science is all mankind that we simply live in a world of human brotherhood. All of our natural instincts are multiplied by wise education. It is in the schools that the intelligent direction of our entire life is laid. The common schools are maintained by all the people for the advancement of all the people; and to maintain and improve the quality of citizenship is the first duty of our schools. Page eight
