ST UDE T COUNCIL lllt's an organization inter- ested mainly in the student body and community, said senior Jennifer Colleton. lt's a good deal better and can only improve, said senior Michelle Ungerleider. They're not doing anything for usp their only concerns are themselves, claimed senior Michael Frolichstein. These roundabout re- sponses are directed at the Student Council, an organiza- tional body of students wan- ting acceptance but condem- ned for its past record of lack- ing accomplishments. Jennifer, president of Stu- dent Council, said the main goal of the group is to reach out to the students to learn what they want. l'Some Stu- dent Council members walk through the halls each day and hear people complaining about some problem of the school, said Jennifer. This and the vastly improved home base program are ways in which we can learn what the students want. This home base program al- lows Student Council to inform the student body about what Student Council is, and lets TOP - Student Council helped to orga- nize the Homecoming Dance which honored Elliot Hall and Sara Esrick. MIDDLE - Melanie Bleveans reads while she gives blood, another Stu- dent Council sponsored activity. RIGHT - Rodney Jean Baptiste do- nates. 50 Student Council the student body reveal what they want done. The program consists of representatives from senior English classes, junior history classes, sopho- more GAP classes, and fresh- man advisories, and is lla real asset in only its second year, said Jennifer. The kids are becoming more aware that home base exists and are res- ponding to it well. However, the Student Coun- cil also concerns itself with an equally weighty issue: com- munication between ETHS and the community. A branch of the Student Council known as the Civic Community Organi- zation invests its time in soup kitchens, visiting nursing homes, Christmas caroling, and idea swaps with its North Shore neighbors. This branch is trying to bridge the genera- tion gap and let Evanston know what the ETHS youth is f ww 4--of -..-.-mq-Q- A -pm.-1,-N doing for its community. One of the main topics from the '86-'87 year, besides the second semester senior exams, renting out Bacon wing to small profit organizations, and the possibility of home- rooms, is the widely acclaimed but unattended social activity - the dance. This year the Student Council cut the yearly dance agenda from seven to two in hopes that students would look forward to a dance as opposed to Udreading an- other school dance, as Mi- chael put it. So, one can see that the Stu- dent Council both commands and demands respect given the improvement and thought- ful considerations for present and future years at ETHS. -by Jeremy Caldwell 4 z 1.1 i .. 1.1. .... .-.w.A.f...,. i
