RETUR T0 RENA SSANC lt was one night in January 1987, when court jesters, sor- cerers, and monks came alive again in Beardsley Gymnasi- um. Freshman humanities stu- dents, on this night, were giv- en the chance to experience life of the Middle Ages. 'iYou get to experience medieval festivals instead of just watch- ing them in the movies, said freshman Debbie Ungerleid- er. The festive evening began with students marching in showing their newfold fash- ions to the parents. There were various costume ideas: jesters, evil sorcerers, priests, peasants, monks, and others. UA lot of people were wearing costumes reflecting on me- dievel and Renaissance times, and how they would have liked to have been dur- ing that time, said Milena Jo- vanovic. Not only were the students sporting their styles, but some of the teachers dressed up as well. There were dances presented by both students and faculty as well as the leg- endary storytelling of English teacher Syd Lieberman. Debbie said, 1 thought the evening was really organized and everyone was in spirit. The evening ended with ev- eryone, including parents, gathering together to watch acrobats, maypole dancing, and juggling. Milena said, I thought it was educational and fun for the kids, because the parents came to see it and you got to see the teachers dancing. Both Debbie and Milena be- lieve that Medieval Revels is a great experience. Debbie said, UI think that most students got a better un- derstanding of what it was like in that time, and while leam- ing a lot, we had a chance to have a good time with every- one. As Medieval Revels night came to a close for another year and the jesters and sor- cerers are once again words TOP - Deborah Williams puts on the last touches RIGHT - Mike Powers takes aim . . . 24 Medievel Revels in a history book, the fresh- men this year hold a fond memory of Medievel Revels night as well as a better un- derstanding of that time peri- od. by John Luczak

VH After five days of wallowing in physics, algebra, and other wonders ofthe universe, week- ends are an excellent time to get back to one of the funda- mentals of existence: eating. Most ETHS students Heat out at least once a week, some- times it's carry outs from Hecky's or Domino's, the fa- miliar food served at local han- gouts, or the more expensive cuisine of ethnic restaurants. Although the reaction of many people may be, 'Restaurants in Evanston? There are no restaurants in Ev- anstonl , connoisseurs of lo- cal eateries may say other- wise. One of the most frequently mentioned places is Yester- day's. Yesterdays is found tucked away on a quiet comer of Sherman Ave. The menu consists of all the sandwiches and hamburgers that can be found on any typical American menu, but everything sewed there is delicious. Much of Yesterday's popularity is due to its atmosphere. It's really cozy, said one student. It's a good place to go with a group of friends. Another popular restaurant was Fritz T hat's It on Chicago Ave. Sophomore Sharyn Tenn st H Eats said, A lot of food is served, and I always have some left over. There are really friendly waiters and waitresses. It's great to go on your birthday, because they sing to you! They serve meals you take your time with. Evanston's ethnic restau- rants were also raved about. The best ofthese seemed to be Dave's Italian Kitchen and Los Palmos. 'lDave's has the best Italian food, asserts David Rita, a senior. Marcia Brenner agrees. She likes Dave's not only for the food, but also because it has a relaxed at- mosphere. lt's dusky with small, cozy tables. There are also rugs suspended from the ceiling. Dave's may be the pos- sessor of the biggest singular meatballs known. Los Palmos is a Mexican res- taurant. llOf course the food is great, says junior Stacey Johnson, 'But, I also like the decorations. They are au- thentically Mexican in flavor - high backed wood chairs and all. Many more places were cited as personal favorites, but the ones mentioned above were the most popular. by Laura Stuart 2 ,l .
