Each of the four schools ran its own English department this year. a dramatic change from the system used in previous years. one of unified, all-school depart- ment supervision under one person. It meant not having a central core to the department, which is not good, said Mr. Curtis Crotty. Department supervisor of Beardsley English. We i 16 didn't have time to devote to our staff or our curriculum. A system of giving proficiency tests for each grade level was initiated this year, in an effort to, according to Mrl Crotty, define exactly what a student should be able to do when he has finished a course in our department.
