Did not exist ln the days of the cave dweller. In the pre-dawn of knowledge There were only the cave fire, The fearful shadows on the wall, And darkness closing in the mind of man. When men began to wonder how and why, The doors began to appear, Shut out were the hostile elements, The fear and superstition ------ Behind each door lay a field of inquiry And the answers to new questions... And so the Evanston student As he stands in the corridors of ETHS Sees before him a multitude of doors, Locked, ajar--foreboding, inviting-- real, imaginary, All opening on the accumulated learning of the past And the undiscovered knowledge of the future. So DOORS were chosen for the Key's theme, For they open upon knowledge That will shape the future And remind us of happy, fruitful days As we look back through them. DOORS... The stress this past year was, as it has been for some time, on gradually intro- ducing the modern approach to math to re- tain the department's high standard of excellence. In keeping with this aim new textbooks were employed in l algebra, and a new senior mathematics course was offered. Thus, the department continued to meet the challenge of an age that can well use the training in the patterns of clear thinking that math courses offer. Students See Light In Faith And Future 1513 Dr. Robert I. Watson speaks on psychology at the Career Conference. Wading through heavy snow- drifts last February, nearly two thousand career hopefuls and parents attended the eighth an- nual Career Conference. Films and panel discussions supplement ed vocational information given by speakers from seventy-five different professions. A new section devoted to helping Evan- stonians select careers attracted many undecided students. Work- ing with the conference sponsors, CC and the Guidance Depart- ment, Mary Kaan and Sue Cum- mings supervised preparations for the two hour event. What's Important? How much does it matter? Those at- tending the Evanston Youth Conference last April pondered the relative importance of tra- dition, ideals, facts, prejudices and faith. High points of EYC were a play, panel discussions and worship service which featured alumnus Chester Kamin as its speaker. The debut of the Varsity team resulted in Evanston's defeating all soccer teams in the area whose formative level equaled the Kits'! Soccer game on Evanston field. If anyone heard shots coming from room I64 this year, it wasn 't his imagination. lt was a member of the rifle team practicing on the range under the homeroom in prep aration for a tough but enioy- able two month season. Mr. Gas- sen's sharpshooters won three and lost seven of their matches. Mr. Burton, another excellent coach, transferred his talents from the successful swimming team to our Varsity and Sophomore golf teams. Tennis Players Serve U Victories ln the tradition of the past two years' undefeated varsity squads, the ETHS tennis team strove for improvement this year. Beginning in March, the players went through a rigorous training program designed to help them develop more agility and stamina. Their long wins column spoke for the effectiveness of the plan. Judy Brown prepares 4 for a long ride. Tom Finger and Dave Busch create. Betty Welch converses with Class History, 1960 a Shaker' There were the prom and commencement. It was all over and no one could figure out where the four years had gone. But as the seniors stood talking to friends they might never see again, they remembered .... Four ears ago--the smell of autumn was in the air--or maybe the dust from the construction begin- ning on the swimming pool, library, office and auditorium--as the freshmen fumbled their way past the huge seniors to find their homerooms. Cheer section had its hoarsest year and everyone yelled loudly enough to carry the football, basketball, and swimming teams to league titles. But it was Mr. Bunn who out-yelled the whole school when a short, scrappy basketball team fought its way downstate. The construction dust was beginning to settle when the sophomores returned in the fall . Wide, Wide World came to Evanston complete with Dave Garroway and Charles Van Doren. The newly completed pool was host to the state swimming meet, and the auditorium was ready for the spring music festival. The main office and the library, too, were moved to their new quarters. They were iuniors now, and only the dust of the landscaping remained. They found their school completely divisionalized, each six weeks report cards were sent home, processed by an impersonal IBM. They brought back YAMO, Jazz Night, and the annual operetta. At last they elected their own officers and all-school leaders. Finally they were seniors. The construction was complete, but their big year was lust beginning. Again they faced a reorganized school. They winced at 25 minute lunch periods, and got used to hear- ing the bulletin sixth period. But it was their last year and they were determined to make it good. They led the new all-school clubs. They planned a revamping of CC. Their football and swimming teams won championships, and their huge basketball team almost made it downstate. They really hit the books. Then came the prom and commencement. The ex-seniors remembered--the building, the changes, the plays, the games .... Many of these things, they knew, they would never forget. --Dave Busch, Evanstonian Editor-in-Chief Joe Herman, Judy Corey and Tony Packard display their National Merit certificates. Where to?
