You mighT Think There's noThing hard in shooTing a riTle, buT The hours oT pracTice ThaT The Rifle Team has spenT in The Gallery cerTainly show ThaT iT Takes a loT oT eTTorT To achieve excellence. During The winTer The members oT The RiTle Team pracTiced aTTer school was ouT, buT whaT did iT maTTer if iT were dark when They goT home? They made records ThaT are worTh more Than a Tew aTTernoons spenT in The Gallery. On SaTurday mornings, when They were To Tire maTches, They were ouT aT school as early as six o'clock some- Times. They yawned and shivered a liTTle, naTurally- who wouldn'T-buT when They goT down To The serious business oT The day, They chalked up scores ThaT are really worTh looking up To. This business oT riTle shooTing mighT seem raTher uninTeresTing To an ouTsider-does iT sound like Tun To lie Tor hours aT a Time on a hard Table wiTh noThing ..Pop buT a Thin, lumpy maTTress under you, squinTing along a riTle barrel aT a liTTle black spoT on a piece oT paper TiTTy TeeT away? No? Well, you oughT To Try iT some Timel The TirsT Tew Times The sling is so TighT ThaT your arm aches Tor a long Time aTTerwards, and iT seems impossible To keep The riTle aimed aT The TargeTg buT when you've made a high score once or Twice, iT's in your blood, and There's noThing ThaT can sTop you. The RiTle Team made a Tine showing This year- They made TiTTh place in The l'learsT MaTch, when There were TiTTy schools compeTing, and in Their reg- ular schedule oT maTches They sTarTed ouT by winning seven and losing only Three. We Think iTs leaders did a preTTy good iob. We hope The juniors who will be The leaders nexT year will have as good a Team as ThaT oT This year and Those oT Tormer years. Carry On! is all we'll say. Capfain RoberT WhiTe, cenTer, Virgil Van Cleave, John Kluge, and Louis Beach aT The forward posifions and Lloyd JeweTT and Charles WorThingTon as guards played The enTire season and were rarely aided by subsTiTuTes. During The firsT semesfer This Team losT To Oak Park, conquered in succession Waukegan, Deerfield, and New Trier, and losf a Thrilling baTTle To lvlorTon by one poinT in The ouTsTanding game of The season. Evansfon, losing TwenTy To nine aT The sTarT of The Third period, puT on a specfacular second-half drive To go inTo The lead, Twenfy-five To TwenTy-four, in The closing minuTes of play, and Then losT The one-poinT advanTage and game on a lvlorfon baskeT scored seconds before The sound of The gun. In The second semesfer The Team again defeafed, New Trier, Deerfield, and Waukegan, and Turned The Tables by conquering lv1orTon7 buT losT To Oak Park and Twice To Proviso lfhe evenfual winners of The championshipl. AfTer The regular season, The VarsiTy squad played hosT To Two Teams of refurning alumni. Played for The enioymenT of a large crowd of boys and Their dads, ouT for The firsf Boys' NighT, The game ended wiTh The VarsiTy five poinTs behind The grads. Those seniors who won major leTTers were: Elmer Anderson, Louis Beach, William Sayles, Philip Han- son, John Kluge, Virgil VanCleave, Roberf A. Whife, Samuel WhiTe, Elmer Wood, and Beverly Wilcox. As succeeding baby picTures smiled Trom The silver screen upon The hushed audience, The crowdl enioyed such rare TreaTs as seeing how Kevil Thomas wore her ears away back when and how our besT aThleTes looked beTore They sprouTed beards. Then came The TradiTionaI mellerdrammer. The audience held iTs breaTh Trom suspense as The blodd-ThirsTy Indians, souITuIIy inTerpreTed by John Anderson and STan WhiTTemore,,whose.haIT-naked bodies were sTreaIced wiTh painT and wiTh such slogans as BeaT Oak Park, y sTaI'ced ruThIessIy across The sTage in pursuiT oT The beauTeous hero- ine, TanTaIizingIy played by Newell McCabe.
