Thus begins a program oT The Forensic Club, whose aim is To insTrucT inTeresTed pupils in The rudimenTs oT parlia- menTary law and oT public speaking. Public speaking is a modern necessiTy. The Teaching oT which is neglecTed in many schools. E. T. l-l. S. encourages abiliTy in selT-expression Through The Speech ConTesT and The Forensic Club Through iTs meeTings. This year broughT a new idea inTo The club rouTine. InsTead oT having The same presidenT. secreTary, and program commiTTee Through- ouT The year, These Tasks were TulTilled each week by a diTTerenT group oT pupils. The club members Thus goT more individual experience in The smooTh running oT a well-organized meeTing. Again This year The programs included diT- TerenT Types oT addresses. OraTions. exTem- poraneous Talks, brieT discussions oT currenT Topics, and debaTes made up The bulk oT The programs. lvlany sTudenTs had an opporTuniTy To display Their hisTrionic TalenTs beTore The Forensic Club disbanded, aT The end oT The TirsT semesTer. Hlvlessieurs eT Mesdemoisellesf' begins The presi- denT, and anoTher meeTing oT The French Club is under way. One oT The oldesT clubs in The school, Le Cercle Francais has as iTs purpose The en- couragemenT oT The use oT spoken French. A visiTor wandering unexpecTedly inTo The social hall during a French Club meeTing mighT Think he had dropped OTT inTo a dreamy sleep. Tor he would hear on all sides The nasals and muTe e's--yes, muTe e's can be heard - oT The musical French Tongue. This year The monThly meeTings again TeaTured many unusual programs. A Talk by Bill McAllisTer and an aTTernoon wiTh a French puppeT show were well aTTended and much enioyed. The aTTernoon oT bridge, played in French, also proved proTiTable, especially To The beTTer players. The highligl'1T oT The season was The romanTic Tarce, Le Francais Tel Qu'on Le Parle, presenTed by a TalenTed casT Trom The TourTh year French classes. And oT course each meeTing was Topped oTT by some Torm oT reTreshmenTs, never, however. French pasTry.

PenTangle is The ouTsTanding denial aT E. T. l-l. S. oT The old proverb, lT's a man's world. For several years The greaTer number oT The senior and iunior girls in school have banded TogeTher, wiTh no males in sighT, To hold Their own programs and business meeTings. This year They have again presenTed a series oT lively meeTings and amusing programs. PenTangle each year gives a dance To raise money Tor iTs scholarship. This year The PenTangle PenT- house, as iT was called, was so well-aTTended ThaT over one hundred dollars was raised To help an ambiTious girl sTarT oTT To college. A melodramaTic aTTernoon in March TeaTured The Villian STill Pursues Her, all ThaT The name implies. AnoTher aTTernoon broughT The moThers oT junior boys as well as girls To an inTeresTing program. MiniaTure conTerences Took place iusT as TryouTs Tor The sTyle show were announced, and The annual Tashion parade in The spring broughT The curTain down upon anoTher dramaTic PenTangle year, in which lvlarTha WhiTehouse, lvlerediTh Davis, Kevil Thomas and Alice-Anne l'lancheTT played The leads. rv' MarTha WhiTehouse, lv1erediTh Davis, Kevil Thomas. Alice Anne l-lancl Cameras are clicking Trom The ArcTic To The Horn. and how E. T. l-l. S. sTudenTs may seT Theirs To clicking mosT proTiTably The Camera Club This year has Tried To poinT ouT. lvleeTing regularly every Monday aTTer- noon, local phoTography addicTs have gone Through an inTensive buT TascinaTing course, covering many imporTanT phases oT Their hobby, Trom selecTion oT lenses To enlarge- menTs. As a sideline, The club has given anoTher series oT Two-reel programs during The lunch periods. ProTiTs Trom These shows have gone Toward The purchase oT new sound movie proiecTors and equipment Once a week. sTudenTs passing by room I33 encounTered a TighTly closed door and drawn shades. IT iT happened To be Monday aTTernoon, mosT oT Them realized ThaT such mysTeries as shuTTers and Time exposures were being de-mysTiTied wiThin. The Camera Club's original phoTograph conTesT, held annually in The spring. This year again broughT To lighT some oT The besT eTTorTs oT The club members, and gave Them a chance To show whaT The club had TaughT Them.

BuT Those E.T.l-l.S. sTudenTs Taking German boasT a much Tuller knowl- edge oT The complicaTed Tongue oT The Rhine-- landers. And many who are anxious To learn To speak by speaking, Tlock To The meeTings oT The German Club To perTecT Their guTTural. AlThough The German Club is one oT The smallesT oT all The deparTmenTal clubs, iT invariably holds meeTings oT inTeresT. AT one oT This year's meeTings. The members Took parT in a discussion oT l-liTler's recenT rearming oT The demiliTarized Rhineland. The TeaTure of The German Club year was The movie which The local German deparTmenT spon- sored in collaboraTion wiTh Those oT New Trier and Deerfield-Shields. l-leld in The EvansTon Social l-lall in May, Emil Und Die DeTekTive proved popular wiTh members oT The Club as well as wiTh Their guesTs. This unusual evenT capped The year's acTivi- Ties oT The German club, whose presidenT was Parker Kaehler. Spanish songs, Spanish dances, Spanish laughTerl lT's The Spanish Club TiesTa. a glori- ous climax To a wonderTul year. Held This spring on May 2I. The TiesTa TeaTured an unusual evenT-a speech conTesT in Spanish. Proifessor Brenes, TaTher oT The club presi- denT..Flaminio Brenes, judged The speeches and deTermined The winners. ln greaTer numbers Than The oTFicers dared hope, Spanish sTudenTs This year flocked To The monThly club meeTings. Seniors again played imporTanT parTs in bringing abouT The year's success, and an execuTive commiT- Tee oT seniors sTeered The club acTiviTies. STarTled 'From Their assembly-period sTudy- ing by The unexpecTed enTrance oT queerly- clad invaders, sTudenTs ThroughouT The school were surprised by The TaciliTy wiTh which These guesTs shouTed and raged in a sTrange Tongue. Many were mysTiTied, buT Spanish sTudenTs undersTood and realized ThaT They were merely beholding a Spanish Club proiecT. These sTunTs in The home rooms were only one oT The many acTiviTies spon- sored by The Spanish Club during iTs evenT- Tul l935-l936 year.
