The Eagle Evans, La. Evans and 2 Peeking Through Elementary, Jr. High High School 3 The Way We Were! E. B. R. H. W. M. K. P. B. R. L. S. 4 The Way 5 We Are! 1980 We, the 1979-80, Annual Staff are very proud to present this year’s annual to a man who put forth 30 years of hard work for Evans. He put in much overtime for his FFA boys and we’ll always remember his “barbecue sauce. He is a graduate of Hornbeck High School and he attended LSU where he received his B.S. in 1948, his Masters in 1946, and his Masters Plus 30 hours in 1968. His dedication to Evans High School has been exemplified by the establishment of the W. F. Dowden Scholarship Fund. It is with much pleasure that we dedicate this annual to Mr. W. F. Dowden. 6 Eagle Staff Left to Right: Standing: Miss Melder, Sponsor, Karen Pippin, Editor, April Goff, Asst. Editor Sitting: Brenda Comer, Asst. Business Manager, Pam Davis. Thanks to all of the Eagle Staff Members; if it hadn’t been for them and their cooperation, then this wouldn't have been possible. My special thanks goes to Miss Melder for her understanding smile in times of depression and her helping hand in times of need. I hope each and everyone of you enjoy this yearbook as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. Sincerely yours, Karen Pippin Editor 7 Superintendent’s Message It is with great pleasure that I commend the 1979-80 yearbook staff for their efforts in producing this excellent record of the past school year. Theirs has been a unique task: that of viewing objectively the school's activities while at the same time participating in them. These young people and their faculty advisers have combined creative ability and a great degree of dedication in accomplishing the goals they set months ago. For their special efforts we are grateful, because in years to come the 1979-80 yearbook will only increase in its value to us. Like the yearbook staff, our faculty, staff and students throughout the parish have worked diligently to achieve their goals also. Significant progress is evident in our school system as we review past months, and I am pleased that we have met our challenges well. Our nation’s homes and schools are greatly responsible for America’s position of world leadership. As we enter a new decade, the 1980's, let us take stock of our country's goals and prepare ourselves for even higher levels of proficiency and productivity. I wish for each of you much success. Dowden 9 o ADMINISTRATION Too often, like Gatsby, we tend to spend so much of our lives in between time;” a foot in the past, a glance to the future. Others will say, sometimes cynically, that there are really only two good places—where we’ve been and where we're going. I would like to think that somehow your years at Evans School provided a striking moment where, in a sense, time stood still, clocks froze, past and future blended somehow, but only to heighten the bittersweet things one lives through at that time, in that place. If we, the faculty and staff, and you, our students, have touched each other, even slightly with a little sentiment and a bit of intellect and a lot of wisdom, then all our lives are ever so enriched by just having known one another. Seniors, as you leave high school, try to remember the feeling of friendship which drifts out of that sensitivie little allegory, JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL: “But overcome space, and all we have left is Here. Overcome time, and all we have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don’t you think that we might see each other once or twice?” Congratulations to the yearbook staff and their sponsor for this outstanding publication. We were touched by his presence during his Senior year at Evans. In the summer of '79, he was taken to heaven. This is our ode to Donald: One I knew you, I think it was several years ago, when we were younger, wilder, happier. We did things in two's then, you and me, me and you. And I could see myself in everything you did. We were living in a world not quite grown up, in a world of simple and honest feelings. Then we grew up and things and feelings weren’t as simple anymore. Now as everything gets more grown up, I try to remember that once, once I knew you and the world isn’t spinning quite so quickly anymore. 109 CLOUDS OF TIME Time, like so many clouds, passes quickly, Into a stage of a not-so perfect memory. Each cloud coils itself into a pattern in the sky Of all our School days that have gone by. i A luster is present in one cloud I see; It represents the group called WE. It tells of things WE have achieved; Of the many satisfactions WE have received. Cloud number two, the center of the heart, A representation of the school from which WE are a part. Our school, our teacher, the group called WE. The cloud that shall remain throughout eternity. Clouds three, four, and other consist of this:- Homework, grades, friends, and yes, the assignments WE’ve missed. The recesses, the buses, the disagreements WE’ve had; The teachers, the cooks, and the good times gone bad. All of these clouds form one special thing; ; A place of hope, ambition, and learning.
