W. A, K. on her letters and I love you under the postage stamp. A y A little brother who plays pop-guns and wants to be a cowboy. g Or a sister who graduates from High School this year, ' All of these and many more constitute the ones who indeed are the home and those that keep home, often just a memory, a reality. They are our inspiration, our will to go on, our guides through depression. But even more, they are the way of life we are fighting to maintain. They are the smiles, the patience, the hope, the hugs, the outstretched arms and the tears of hap- piness that await our return. .Nidforg With the awarding of a contract for construction, the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company began construction on EVANS. She began an impressive string of First , She was the first of a new postwar class of Destroyer Escorts to be launched and com- pleted on the West Coast since World War Ilg the largest warship to be completed in Seattle since World War llg the first ship of it's type to join Cruiser-Destroyer-Force Pacific Fleetg and the first of her type to successfully complete a Far East Cruise. Her keel was laid in 1955, she was launched in September 1955 and delivered to the Navy in May 1957. EVANS arrived at her Home Port, San Diego, California in August 1957. He assumed Command of the USS Rice County QLST-10893 and was Executive Officer of the USS Morton QDD-9483, the position he held until taking Command of the EVANS in March of 1965, LCDR Stalder is married to the form- er Mary Jo Lotspeich of x Davenport, Iowa. They have three children, a boy 3, and two girls, ages 1 1X2 and 5 months. He was promoted to Com- mander and reported for duty on the Staff of Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet in May.
