It is simply a miracle conversion of deserted buildings haunted with the tales of an army hospital into a nationally recognized institution. Evangel's birthday was August 26, l953, when the General Council ofthe Assemblies of God authorized the establishment of a liberal arts college. The denomination's Education' Department began making plans for an in- stitution created to trainthe pentecostal youth who would not attend Bible School. The groundwork was laid to provide higher edu- cation .with Christian environment. The major move toward establishment came during the next year when O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, was declared surplus by the United States Govern- ment. lt was thereby presented for private acquisition. A carefully prepared application was submitted by the Education Department. After a series of Washington conferences, it was announced that for the price of one dollar, the seventy buildings and equipment located on fifty-eight and a half acres of property would become an educational ,insti- tution of the Assemblies of God-Evangel College. Q But this was only the beginning of the miracle story. A location on America's main street, Highway 66, does not constitute a college. The -next step was the selection of a faculty and staff and to provide the proper facilities for the forthcoming class. Following consultation, the educational committee con- tacted Dr. Klaude Kendrick to head the new institution, and with his advice other members of the faculty were selected. Faculty mem- bers who are pentecostal and well qualified in their fields are ready to be advisor as well as instructor. Since that time there has been considerable increase each year, with representation from almost every state plus foreign countries. Accreditation was the next major de- velopment in campus history. ln the fall of l957, academic recognition was extended by the University of Missouri Committee on Accredited Schools and Colleges. The approval gives the college permanent status with the Teachers Certification Division of the State Department of Education in Missouri and also assures transfer to other colleges a-nd univ- ersities without difficulty. Few institutions have gained this accreditation after such a short period of operation. 7 A change in administrative policy took place in March, l958, when the college Board of Directors approved a plan to co-ordinate the adminis- tration of Evangel and Central Bible Institute. Dr. J. Robert Ashcroft was selected as president with Dr. Klaude Kendrick servi-ng as academic dean. The fall of l958 marked a milestone in college history, with the first class reaching senior status, making Evongel a complete fourlyear liberal arts college. Evangel has succeeded in ,accomplishing a goal which was an incentive for those who were responsible for the college's beginning - that of training young people equipped. academically, spiritulally, and socially, to become the leaders of tomorrow. - History by Doris Strache 8 f ,w QQ E ET ff R53 gi QWQY A Y',- x Q J? ia, . , . On-campus activity wel coming visiting speaker lPhilippines7. P. Nichols, Ken Robisoil .61 SPEAKER IN the morning and eve-ning chapel services in the fall was the Reverend J. B. Oaks, pastor of Calvary Temple, Oklahoma City, Okla- homa. These revival shots picture the Reverend Oaks as he chats with students, and scenes of the nightly altar services where all who participated were blessed. 62 WHEN INDIVIDUALS hunger tor God, when the preaching is directed and anointed by the Holy Spirit, and when the Spirit moves upon God's people, revival is assured. During the tall Religious Emphasis Week, and again in the spring,Evangel students felt this quickening power of the spirit leading them in a closer consecration to Christ. HEVIVAL SWEEPS EVANGH 1 the Holy 3od's gious Jngel spirit wrist. SWEEPS EVANGEL COLLEGE! EACH YEAR students look forward to these periods of spiritual refreshing which enrich their lives and supplement their other worship activities. There are testimonies of personal problems solved, of personal victories, of refillings, and of the infilling with the Holy Spirit. These are evidences of vital personal experiences with Jesus Christ-the foundation for genuine Christian character and the basis for Evan- gel's distinctive spiritual emphasis. .........---.-....,.,.....,.,.,,..v.,s..ss--, . ,,.d.H-.,-....... .---, EASTERN PRAYER GROUP - Mr. Er-nst, P. Coach Arnold had only four players returning from last year's squad: Bob Ashcroft, Joe Anderson, Gary Dickinson, and Don Youngs. Arnold's first year of coaching was a great success with l0 wins and four losses. Spirit, stamina, and sportsmanship were the greatest asset of the Crusaders squad. Even when there was a height disadvantage the players would never stop fighting. Against such large schools as Pittsburgh State, and Southwest Missouri State where they played the Junior Varsities against great odds, the Crusaders would not admit defeat until the last whistle was blown. They also showed that they will be a tough team' in the future by beating Drury J.V., a school which is considered a topnotch basketball school. The team could find no better coach than Forest Arnold. He seta scoring record at Memphis State by scoring over 2000 points. Memphis State voted him the most valuable player in the history of the school. He was listed in Who's Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities. A Coach Arnold stated that this year's team was a good solid team, and that next year's team will be even better. Forest Arnold not only gave the team unity and spirit, but gained the respect and confidence of each player.
