GETTING UNDER WAY The firsl' and perhaps mos'r difficull' lap of fhe race was now compleled, buf 'rhere was more ahead. Among +he various subiecrs for which we were programed in our sophomore year was biology. We had a wonderful lime dissecfing frogs, and if really proved +o be of academic value. Mr. Gay and his 'ream of 'fish' again won +he ci+y champion- ships. Mr. Gay was also named +he besl' high school swimming coach in fhe counfry. ln May, many of us wenl' +o our firs+ G.O. dance, where we danced un+il midnighl' 'ro fhe heavenly melodies of Diclc Roberfs' band. June ended fhe midway mark of our high school careers, and fhe race foward our goal was half complefed. ln Seplember, we would come baclc +o fhe halls of Evander as iuniors.

The foofball season sfarfed off wifh a bang, and Old Man Winfer paid us an early visif. However, Lady Spring also came early, and wifh her came fhe Forfiefh Anniversary of Evander. A common face around fhe school fhaf year was a former sfudenf, Aaron Schwaff, buf perhaps we would know him beffer by fhe name of Red Buffons. In fhe assembly he made a hi+ wifh everyone when a couple of fhe girls ioined him in fhe BuHon's Bounce. On T.V. screens all over fhe counfry fhe name of Evander Childs High School became familiar. Red never failed fo give his alma mafer a plug. December found us confribufing our exfra pennies for fhe annual foy drive. We saw fhese foys go fo fhe underprivileged children of New Yorlz. When Easfer rolled around, we again found ourselves doing charifable work. The planf collecfion was one of our besf. Veferans in fhe hospifals enioyed fhe planfs unfil fhe very lasf leaf wilfed. Anofher greaf producfion fool: place in our audiforium. The Glee Club, assisfed by fhe Modern and Folk Dance groups, puf on a very successful version of Gilberf and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore. If was one of fhe besf performances ever given af Evander.

HOME STRETCH The energy 'thai' had been waifing io bursf 'For'l'h during fhe summer monfhs sei' our +hird year info full swing. Among fhe firsi' fhings we planned for our iunior year was our junior prom. We worked on 'rhe idea for mon+hs, and when i+ finally came off, ii' was quife a success. Thai year we also learned qui+e a bi+ aboui' Pakisfan and Denmark. We were privileged +o have as foreign guesfs, Anis SaH'i and Inge Sfoulsfrup. They visiled our classes and 1'olcl of 'rheir counfries, fheir cusfoms and whai' fhey fhoughi' of fhe American way of life. H' was especially inferes+ing fo lis+en fo Anis speak, because his counfry, Pakis'ran, had iusi' secured ifs independence and sef up a new form of government Along wi+h The June heal, came our annual boal' ride. The Evander sfudenfs once again wen+ 'up +he river.' The day was filled wi+h happiness. We basked in fhe sun, gof sick on +he roller- coas+er and dive bombers, and exercised our vocal chords unfil we all had laryngilis. Two weeks lafer we would be seniors officially, and on June 26, when fhe class of '56 walked up on 'rhe sfage of fhe Paradise Thea+re fo receive fheir sheepskins, we af lasf were ihe new senior class.
