BARNETT Mrs. Barnell, our Conlemporary Problems and Core leacher, was a sludenl al Hunler College High School and did graduale work al Columbia. Before coming lo Evancler, Mrs. Barnell laughl al Theodore Roosevell, De Will Clinlon, and James Monroe, among olhers. For lhirleen years Mrs. Barnell has laughl al Evander and has lormed lhe following opinion aboul leaching here, l enjoy il, find il exciling and an inspiralion. Mrs. Barnell now resides in Manhallan wilh her husband and son. When away lrom school, her inleresls are polilics and reading. MR. FRANK R. BELLINO Among lhe members ol our Heallh Educalion Deparlmenl is Mr. Bellino, who has been leaching swimming lor lhirly-lwo years, and who has recenlly become lhe coach ol lhe Bowling Team. His hobbies include boaling, lishing, and hunling, bul his lavorile is being lhe repair man around lhe house, where he can be wilh his wile and lhree sons. MRS. DORA BLOOMFIELD Mrs. Dora E. Bloomfield, one ol our many science leachers, came lo Evander in I943. ln oblaining her B.S. in leaching, she allended bolh Hunler and Columbia. Besides leaching general science, she also enjoys leaching biology. Belore coming lo Evander, she laughl in Haaren High School. She is also in charge ol service records and awards. MRS. MARY CANTER Mrs. Mary Canfer, one of our well known healfh educafion feachers, is a graduafe of Girls High School, Hunfer College, and Columbia Universify. She maiored in physical educafion and chemisfry. Her afhlefic achievemenfs are many. Among fhem are: baskefball, hockey, handball, golf, and fhe cify fencing fifle. A residenf of Wesfchesfer Counfy, she is married fo a docfor and has fwo children, a boy and a girl. Her hobbies are one: golf. MR. CHEITMAN Mr. Cheifman has faughf Spanish af Evander Childs since I9I8. He was graduafed from C.C.N.Y., affended Fordham Uni- versify, N.Y.U., and fhe Universify of Madrid. Among his many inferesfs, Mr. Cheifman parficularly enioys opera and fishing. Mr. Cheifman exfends his very besf wishes fo all fhe graduafes. MR. BERT FUND Mr. Berf Fund, who conducfs Evander's Band and Orchesfra af fhe various concerfs, assemblies, and fesfivals of fhe school year, received his Bachelor of Social Science degree af Cify College and his M.A. in Music Educafion af Columbia. His hobbies are golf, chess, and bridge. He also enioys going fo concerfs. He doesn'f fhink sfudenfs have changed much since he firsf came here eighfeen years ago, excepf fhaf he feels fhey don'1' sfudy as hard. However, he readily admifs fhaf in fhis, as in every- fhing else, fhere are quife a few excepfions fo fhe rule. MRS. MIRIAM JACOBS Mrs. Jacobs, one of our mafhemafics feachers af Evander, received her B.A. af Hunfer and fook graduafe work af Columbia. She is married and fhe mofher of fwo daughfers. Mrs. Jacobs has faughf in ofher schools, buf fhinks highly of Evander and ifs sfu- denfs. She firmly believes fhaf everyone who possibly can should co.nfin his educafion. fm MRS. MOLDENKE One who has been sfimulafing and helpful, bofh fo her home- room class and fo her subiecf classes, is Mrs. Moldenke. A feacher of general science, biology and zoology, Mrs. Moldenke has been wifh Evander since Sepfember, l934. She lives in Park Hill, Yonkers, wifh her husband and her fwelve-year-old son. Among ofher hob- bies, Mrs. Moldenke enioys oufdoor nafure sfudy and planf collecf- ing. She and her husband have wriffen a book on fhis subiecf enfifled Planfs of The Bible. Mrs. Moldenke considers feaching mosf grafifying, because almosf all sfudenfs progress fhroughouf fhe years. MOLLIE NEWMAN Among fhe feachers who will long remain in fhe minds of graduafing Evanderifes is Mrs. Newman, who nof only feaches Lafin buf also music. Mrs. Newman complefed her educafion af Hunfer College and Columbia Universify. Mrs. Newman derives a greaf deal of pleasure from fravel- ing, especially in Europe. This is parfly because she enioys speak- ing fhe diverse languages. Her chief recreafion is golf, in which she has won fiffeen frophies. Though she spends a greaf deal of fime on fhe golf course, Mrs. Newman manages fo devofe some fime 'ro Evander's golf feam, of which she is fhe coach. MRS. EMILY NATHAN Mrs. Emily Nafhan, faculfy advisor of fhe Senior Arisfa, has been feaching hisfory and economics in Evander for six years. She affended Hunfer College and received her Masfer of Economics degree af New York Universify. She says fhaf feaching is a mosf safisfying career, and she finds feaching in Evander parficularly safisfying because fhe sfu- denf body represenfs a cross secfion of our cify and nafion. We weren'f used fo such a large school. We fell for all fhe usual and unending fricks, like buying lockers, cafeferia places, running down fo fhe cafeferia and up four flighfs fo fhe gym. A common face around fhe school fhaf year was a former sfudenf, Aaron Schwaff, buf perhaps we would know him beffer by fhe name of Red Buffons. In fhe assembly he made a hi+ wifh everyone when a couple of fhe girls ioined him in fhe BuHon's Bounce. On T.V. screens all over fhe counfry fhe name of Evander Childs High School became familiar. Red never failed fo give his alma mafer a plug. December found us confribufing our exfra pennies for fhe annual foy drive. We saw fhese foys go fo fhe underprivileged children of New Yorlz. When Easfer rolled around, we again found ourselves doing charifable work. The planf collecfion was one of our besf. Veferans in fhe hospifals enioyed fhe planfs unfil fhe very lasf leaf wilfed. Anofher greaf producfion fool: place in our audiforium. The Glee Club, assisfed by fhe Modern and Folk Dance groups, puf on a very successful version of Gilberf and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore. If was one of fhe besf performances ever given af Evander. GETTING UNDER WAY The firsl' and perhaps mos'r difficull' lap of fhe race was now compleled, buf 'rhere was more ahead. Among +he various subiecrs for which we were programed in our sophomore year was biology. We had a wonderful lime dissecfing frogs, and if really proved +o be of academic value. Mr. Gay and his 'ream of 'fish' again won +he ci+y champion- ships. Mr. Gay was also named +he besl' high school swimming coach in fhe counfry. ln May, many of us wenl' +o our firs+ G.O. dance, where we danced un+il midnighl' 'ro fhe heavenly melodies of Diclc Roberfs' band. June ended fhe midway mark of our high school careers, and fhe race foward our goal was half complefed. ln Seplember, we would come baclc +o fhe halls of Evander as iuniors. HOME STRETCH The energy 'thai' had been waifing io bursf 'For'l'h during fhe summer monfhs sei' our +hird year info full swing. Among fhe firsi' fhings we planned for our iunior year was our junior prom. We worked on 'rhe idea for mon+hs, and when i+ finally came off, ii' was quife a success. Thai year we also learned qui+e a bi+ aboui' Pakisfan and Denmark. We were privileged +o have as foreign guesfs, Anis SaH'i and Inge Sfoulsfrup. They visiled our classes and 1'olcl of 'rheir counfries, fheir cusfoms and whai' fhey fhoughi' of fhe American way of life. H' was especially inferes+ing fo lis+en fo Anis speak, because his counfry, Pakis'ran, had iusi' secured ifs independence and sef up a new form of government Along wi+h The June heal, came our annual boal' ride. The Evander sfudenfs once again wen+ 'up +he river.' The day was filled wi+h happiness. We basked in fhe sun, gof sick on +he roller- coas+er and dive bombers, and exercised our vocal chords unfil we all had laryngilis. Two weeks lafer we would be seniors officially, and on June 26, when fhe class of '56 walked up on 'rhe sfage of fhe Paradise Thea+re fo receive fheir sheepskins, we af lasf were ihe new senior class. THE FINISH The summer was indeed a long one. We longed fo come back fo school for our Iasf year af Evander. Sepfember I0 was fhe day of our refurn fo fhe familiar halls fhaf would be a memory in approximafely eighf monfhs. The Iasf Iap of fhe race was begin- ning, and we were in fhe Iead. Senior iewelry was ordered, applicafions for colleges and insfifufions of higher educafion were filled. Yef in all fhis husfle and busfle we found fime fo do our share in helping many of fhe people in need of clofhing fhrough no faulf of fheir own. Our clofhing drive provided a helping hand fo many Europeans. As usual, senior day was a success, and in January, eighfy- eighf of our fellow sfudenfs deparfed from our midsf. Affer Easfer we were all excifed. Graduafion was only fwo monfhs away. Scholarship winners were nofified, accepfances from colleges were fransmiffed, and 'rhe field of commerce received a fresh crop of young, ambifious graduafes. The race is af an end. We are fhe friumphanf ones, and yef we find sadness in our hearfs.
