A Message from the Ring Master 1 a Dear Gradua+es: A modern high school is in some respecls like a lhree ring circus. In one ring we have 'l'he lraining of characfer and personalifyg in anofher, rhe devel- opmenl' of skills and knowledge: and in 'rhe 'rhird, 'rhe fosrering of habiis and aHi'l'udes. ln all of rhese ac+ivi+ies fhe principle of pleasure is essenlial +o success. I rrusr +ha+ you will remember Evander as people remember a circus: a place where work was pleasurable, a place where your imaginafion and , admira+ion were s+imula+ed, and a place +ha+ in- i spired you lo emulafe 'lhose worlhy ac+ivi1'ies and personaliries +ha+ you admired. There are differences, of course, be'rween +he circus and fhe school. While happiness is an impor+an+ considerarion, ir is noi' +he end-all of high school educalion. While an occasional clowning may be pardonable, an armosphere of relaxed seriousness, 'rhoughrfulness and confemplarion is +he sine qua non of a successful high school educalion. Neverlheless, 1'he similarifies are fhere, and we hope fhal' 'l'he obieclives of 'rhe lhree rings of high school life have been a'r+ained by you 'lo a salisfaclory de- gree, in accordance wi+h your po'ren+iali+ies, limirafions, and in'reres+s. May you confinue +o derive pleasure from rhe circus of life and may you look back upon your slay in Evander as a happy as well as a profi+able one. Sincerely yours WWJWJ 5
