The spring semesler was even more evenlful, whal wilh flower colleclions, baseball games, and I'he Ias'r glorious and mosl' delighlful evenl' of Ihe year, lhe boal ride l'o Rye. HIE LIGHTS UT THE GREATEST SHAW UN EAHTH BY HARRIET EISNER A DAY AT THE EIREHS Beneafh fhe Big Top of Evander Childs High School, wifhin fhe canvas walls and under fhe colored lighfs, fhe circus folk perform fhe same acfs as fheir grandparenfs. While such splendor and loveliness is fhe producf of years of fradifion and experience, we Evander Tigers, alfhough we cannof equal all fhe daring feafs of fhe pasf nor exhibif so magnificenf a menagerie, have af our command fhe fun, frolic, laughfer, and hard work which are so much fhe lifeblood of every circus. The personalifies fhaf bloom wifhin Evander's halls of learning are as colorful as fhe circus clown, as foolish and as wise. We, fhe Old Grads of '55, now fake our places in fhe passing parade. Buf nof wifhouf a back- ward look. Our producfion consisfecl of four acfs, marking fhe fransifion from shy and self-conscious children fo mafure and assured youfhs, desfined fo make The world circus a beffer place. ACT I Do you remember how you felf fhaf very firsf day in Evander, fhe brighf aufumn morning fhaf you became as so many before had been, and ofhers will be, fhe callow Evander Freshman? How fearfully we walked fhrough fhe huge doors which had opened fo forfy-one classes of fresh- men. And fhen whaf seemed like a maze of corridors, an infinife amounf of rooms, and a group of very superior high school sfudenfs! During fhose firsf few weeks we soon had our share of Delaney cards, book receipfs, and sympafhefic glances. We managed fo furn down offers for fen-cenf seafs in fhe cafeferia and audiforium, buf we fell prey fo a hosf of upper-ferm pranks. 20

Ironically, we enioyed perpefrafing fhe very same 'rricks upon fhe hapless freshmen fhaf had been inflicfed on us. The female porfion of +he sopho- more class were delighfed fo observe fhaf 'rheir male confemporaries had grown quife a few inches, fhe laffer equally happy over fhe facf fhaf fhe former had nof. Once again Susie Sophomore donned fhaf blue sack ofherwise known as a gym suif, gasped af her formless body in fhe mirror, and proceeded fo pass her afhlefic skill fesfs. Once again we parficipafed in fhe clofhing drive and annual foy collecfion af Chrisfmas. Wifh fhe passing of ferm examinafions we wenf on fo our lasf free Regenfs week, and again we reached fhe year's halfway mark. The spring semesfer of '53 proved mosf excifing. We proudly wafched Evander's Spring Fesfival wifh ifs gliffering array of musical and arfisfic performers, welcomed fhe Herald Tribune guesfs, and elecfed Faifh Broder 'ro anofher ferm as 6.0. represenfafive. Soon we sailed up fhe Easf River fo Rye's playland of fun and excifemenf. The Regenfs examinafions quelled fesfive spirifs, bringing sweaf and fears for some of us. Buf we pushed fhose insfrumenfs of forfure 'ro fhe back of our minds as we began our second infermission from fhe Evander Big Top. ACT III Refurn fo school in 'rhe fall was happier because fhe fhree-year fighfing in Korea had ended and because we were now upper-fermers.
