ALPERN, DR. HYMEN Our principal, fo whom we owe fhe peculiar delighffulness of our school. Scholarly, foleranf, kindly and appre- ciafive, Dr. Alpern is a person whom we re- specf and love. He was educafed bofh local- ly and abroad, winning a diploma in fhe Cenfro de Esfudios in Madrid, and fhe degrees of A.B. af Cify College, A.M. af Columbia, and Ph.D. af New York Universify. He be- came a feacher in I9I7 and head of fhe mod- ern language deparfmenf in DeWif+ Clinfon High School in I928. He came fo Evander as ifs principal in I934. Having, in his earlier days, prepared fo follow his fafher's example as preacher, Dr. Alpern furned fo a more secular fype of feaching when he felf fhaf if offered a chance of reaching more people. He has been acfive in religious fields, having been associafed wifh fhe Zionisf Youfh Commiffee, fhe Nafional Conference of Chrisfians and Jews, fhe Eoundafion of Cafholics for Human Brofher- hood, and fhe Williamsbridge Chrisfian Com- munify Cenfer. He is an accomplished aufhor of several books and a hosf of arficlesp he won fhe Firsf La Prensa Prize for fhe besf book of 'Ihe year in I926, and fhe besf arficle of fhe year in I927. His books include Educafion of fhe Superior Sfudenff' I935, and Comedies del Siglo de Oro, I939. A few of his many arfi- cles are PersonaIi'Iy Problems in High School Adminis+rafion, Li'rerary and Culfural Val- ues, Guillen de Casfro, and Training for a World We Wanf fo Live in.
