MODERN PRIMITIVES Here fo Evander we came in February I944 bursfing wifh a desire fo express ourselves ln our naive enfhusiasm we saw wufh fresh childlike vision fhe high school of our choice Each de fail of our new school life we cherished We felf grown up We loved fhe plcfure hung walls and fhe fhrongs of super beings in fhe corridors spoken of so worshipfully as Seniors We wondered if we could live long enough fo be Seniors ourselves' We fook such pride in pulling our program cards ouf of flashy wallefs We displayed our G O buffons as symbols of mafurify We boughf handbooks We loved fhe lunch room fhe gyms and even fhe sfudy hall If was sfill war fume and we Evander Primihves faufhfully boughf War Bonds and War Sfamps lWe even boughf gym spofs from shrewd and hearfless Semorsl We had school air raid drills and we learned fo use a black ouf as an excuse for nof doing homework Who can ever forgef fhe sense of ownership we Primifives had when one day in fhe spring of I944 Evander presenfed fhe Army wifh a leep' We were fhrilled wifh fhe Varsify Play Junior Miss especially as fhose who boughf fickefs were excused from classes We planned fo qo in for dramahcs and finally fo acf on Broadway We were sfrangely qulef affer D Day Affer a gasless summer vacaflon, we refurned in Sepfember, I944, as Upper Freshmen, Second Termers, sfill Primifives, wifh abounding imagi nafion and weak fechnique, no longer in need of Mr. Messing's guidance, for we were given a Guidance Counsellor of our own, Mr Schneider We were allowed fo fake five sublecfs if we were good enough fo gef fhe required average. We sfarfed algebra. We vowed fo major in Spanish when La Prensa of Buenos Aires received fhe Evander vo+e for oufsfanding service fo Pan American relafions. We joined all fhe school salvage drives Whaf loads of paper we carried fo school, nof enfirely ou+ of pafriofism, for fhe class which confribufed fhe mosf paper had been promised free sodas! We helped fill Chrisfmas kifs for fhe army, and we cheerfully con fribufed fo fhe liH'le shuf ins of our cify hospifals.
