DEDICATICN We, the class of 1959, dedicate our Hornet to Superintendent Tilman R. Smith. Mr. Smith will have given ten years of service to Unit District 140 at the close of this year. Mr. Smith will remain in our memories as a man whose chief concern has been our welfare and who has done much to make a good education available to us. Thus, as a tolcen of our appreciation, we dedicate our book to Mr. Smith.

FOREWGRD Since Community Unit School District 140 was formed in March 1949 it has been my privilege to serve as the general superintendent. This is a position which has not been taken lightly because educators deal with the most important of the community's resources-its children. The board of education, the staff, and the patrons of Unit 140 have wanted the best that the community's human and economic resources can provide. We have constantly striven for quality, always recognizing that education is not static and that we never reach a state of having arrived. In the past ten years we have often been gratified but never satisfied. Improvement and complacency don't go hand in hand. This means that if the Unit 140 schools are to retain a position of educational leadership areas of improve- ment must constantly be sought. As I leave this school system I will carry with me the confidence that progress will be accelerated. With an outstanding board of education upon which this community insists, a fine teaching and non teaching staff, and a body of students and patrons of which no community can produce a higher type, I am sure that in the years ahead Unit 140 will always be in a favorable educational position. I wish to congratulate the sponsor and the staff of the Hornet. This publication has always been a quality production and has helped create an atmosphere of prestige for the schools. Even though to achieve quality hard work is entailed, I am sure that none of you would even consider the alternatives. I would like to leave with you this sentiment so beautifully expressed by Henry Van Dyke in his poem Four Things : Four things a man must learn to do If he would make his record true: To think without confusion clearly, To love his fellow men sincerely, To act from honest motives purely, To trust in God and Heaven securely. ' R Tilman . Smith
