She has put countless hours of work and time into the annual for many years. Each year brings new challenges and ac- complishments in her work on the annual. There are literally thousands of pictures taken for the yearbook and Mrs. Carmack and her staff are highly selective in choosing the best ones. This dedication has made the annuals the fine productions that they have been. Mrs. Carmack is completing her 14th year at Eunice High School. This year, more than ever, she has rekindled her zest for life in and out of the classroom. The 1986 Annual Staff proudly dedicates this annual to Mrs. Carmack for her dedicated efforts and worthy achievements. Mrs. Linda Carmack Mrs. Carmack takes time away from Eunice to go to the Sta i'racK Meet with her students and take pictures for her school. 2 The theme of this ’86 edition is Special Times which is depicted in the following poem and pages: WE ARE THE CARDINALS — Pat Patterson Class of 1957 E.H.S. We are the Cardinals and always will be — Setting examples for all to see — The young ones know our names and we know theirs — Cause we’re all part of the Cardinal family that really cares — We walk down the halls of Junior High — and see the Cardinal spirit that will never die — We’ve hung up our numbers and met the challenge with Cardinal pride — Remembering times when we laughted and prayed — and fussed and cried — Volleyball was finished for the year we heard — but our girls went to state and finished third — Expecting to play basketball in the “Northern Pit” — Cause we’re not the kind to just stay home and sit — We think of the classes, proms, awards, and even times at the hills — Which have added up to be lots of thrills — Yes, we have met the challenge and passed the test — Because we’re the Eunice Cardinals and we’re the BEST — Pure Excitement wanes during a time-out Angela and Irma learn the basics of cooking. Eunice students show their support during the homecoming parade. 4 Excitement! Cathy, Amy, and Rosie doodle while waiting for the bell. Beginning a Next to quest for peace, our nation's most important goal is the development of a high-quality educational enterprise that will prepare all youngsters for life in a fast changing and complex world. I believe that the philosophy of the Eunice Board of Education, Superintendent and Staff is, and will remain, student centered: a student is the most important person in the Eunice Schools a student is not an interruption of our work — he or she is the purpose of it a student is one who comes to us with needs and or wants — it is our job to fill them a student is deserving of the most courteous and attentive treatment we can provide a student is the lifeblood of this and every other school — without him or her we would have to close our doors. The focus of the future should be on service and excellence. I am pleas- ed, as Superintendent of Schools, to have the opportunity to serve and work with the students of Eunice High School. From the desk where I sit, the answer to world problems is found in a single word — EDUCATION. New Superintendent Mr. Don Herron smiles as 2-Mil Levy passes. He used good judgment in making decisions to settle any differences between the student body and faculty members. Assisting Mr. Robinson in the office was Mrs. Gwen Hahn, long-time secretary and registrar. Dedicated and hardworking, Mrs. Hahn completed her 30th year in the office. She was invaluable in helping to keep the school running smoothly. Mr. Davis, Mr. Malone, and Mr. Robinson find a few moments to visit. Activities for raising funds ranged from selling calendars and washing cars to selling baked goods and creating an enchilada supper. The officers and members who par- ticipated in most of the meetings and events were allowed to go to Las Cruces. At the convention, the members learned about such things as getting along with the administration, coping with stress, and even making spending money go further at college. Many new friends were met at the conven- tion and the experience that were shared would remain for a lifetime. The officers and members worked with the administration by presenting them with ideas that would raise the morale at school. Cheerleaders attended Texas Tech University Cheerleading Camp last summer, which was a very enlightening experience. On June 16, they piled into the van and headed north to Lubbock. In addition to sore throats and aching muscles, they learned different routines and cheers. Attending this camp helped them to cheer the Cardinals on to victory, they have also had the backing of the athletes and fans. “To all the 1985-86 Football and Basketball players, we say — CONGRATULATIONS — it was great cheering for you. To all the Cardinal fans — THANKS — for your support, and to all the future cheerleaders, have fun, stick together as a team, and keep up that Cardinal spirit!!” ’85-’86 Cheerleaders Miss Elliott is entertained by the varsity squad. Compiling his team with that thought in mind, Coach Schmitt taught them to think of their group as a family. There were extra challenges as many of the returning players had to learn the rules of their new positions because the coach shifted personnel. Although the team had a 4-5 year, they were a dedicated group who had the support of the fans, cheerleaders, and student body. In the first round they defeated Cuba, but lost to Jal in the second round. The girls played Crownpoint for third place and easily won the match. In order to reach the state play-offs, the varsity and junior varsity players prepared themselves for a hardworking year. To be a member of one of the most prestigious pro- grams on campus took discipline, skill, dedication, sportsmanship, and a winning at- titude. New Head Coach Nancy Hicks, with the help of Asst. Coach Connie Massey, taught the girls to play with togetherness. This brought about the volleyball term “T N T” which means Tough and Togetherness. After receiving a wild card berth and win- ning the regional championship by defeating Estancia and Hope, the team was on its way to the state tournament for the first time. With these goals in mind, the ladies approached each game as though it were a state contest. After the regular season, the Lady Cards had a record of 13 wins and 5 losses. By defeating Dexter in a fierce district tournament game 48-47, the ladies entered the regional tournament, in which they lost their opening game to Hatch 56-59. They then proceeded to roll over the Bucks 41-19 in an exciting finale to the evening. 139 The 1986 Basketball Homecoming was off to a great start as the Lady Cardinals stomped the Hagerman Bobcats 57-52 in an exciting game.
