1950 FO0TBALL Hl-LIGHT S A glance at Eugene High's 1950 season tells you that it was one af the most successful in the history of the school. The Axemen didn't look too strong at the approach of the 1950 prep season, but as the year progressed the squad took shape and molded into a top-flite aggregation. For the first contest, Coach Hank Nilsen chose the strongest opponent available, Med ord. The game proved a real test for the. Axemen and they came out with flying colors. The highlight of the game came when Merritt Barber took a kickoff late in the fourth quarter and raced 86 yards to a TD. Chalk up number one for the Axemen, 24-19. Next came the Springfield Millers. Quar- terback Wally Russell passed to one touchdown, jerry Aiken plunged for two, and Manning Barber ran for the other. Ray Wrigglesworth, a new find in an extra point kicker, converted three out of four. Give the Axemen number two, 27-0. From across them thar hills came the Bend Lava Bears, Nilsen's former coaching school. The steadily improving Eugene squad made it mighty tough for the Bears as Russell tossed two TD passes. Russell's performance did not over- shadow Dick Crawford's 58 yard pay dirt scamper to insure the winning margin. I-lang up vic- tory number three for Eugene, 20-6. Next week Nilsen took his gridders to Cottage Grove where they played one of the toughest games of the season. The hepped-up Lions tallied first and put the pressure on, but the Axemen went on to tie up the game and later surge ahead 12-6 at the half. The game was wide open for both teams until Dick Crawford broke the Lions' back with a 78 yard TD run. Mark down victory number four, 19-6. At this point in the season it appeared that Eugene and Albany were the leading contenders for the district 4 berthffo the state playoffs. Meanwhile Hank Nilsen's crew disposed of the Cor- vallis Spartans 47-13, a game in which the Axemen exploded for 40 points in the last half. Next week the Axemen journeyed to Albany to play the big one with the Bulldogs, The winner was almost a sure selection for state playoff berth. Evidently the Bulldogs wanted the coveted berth because they piled up 13-0 advantage in the first eleven minutes of play. The Axemen came steaming back and trailed by only one point at the half, 15-12. The second half opened with an l i r ROW lr D. Himber. Manager: W. Maxwell: R. Burke: B. Hinkson: R. Gillilan: D.
