Hendricks, Remember the unearthly sounds that confronted us whenever we happened to enter the band room dur- ing fifth period? Fantastic as it seemed, all the racket was caused by members of the school orchestra, diligently beat- ing out the strains of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony or some other classic rendition. Nevertheless, when called upon to make a public appearance, the or- chestra always came through in top form. During the first semester the orchestra presented musical programs in many of the elementary schools located in or around Eugene. These programs were planned to aid the various schools in their music edu- cation. The orchestra took to the road again in March and presented a concert at the Seaside High School. Rs soon as these projects were completed, practice for the district and state contests became a full time job. Living up to the standards set by Eugene High or- chestras in the past, the orchestra again received superior rating, to conclude another successful year. O. Cromroy. cfaaceiancf Ah relief! , nothing could explain more clearly the feelings of the Eugene High students when the Dance Band mercifully consented to play at the noon dances. Anyone who patronized these dances admits whole heartedly that this group saved many a person from insanity due to the same old records which we heard over and over again. The band lent its help also in adding to the success of various activities with its superb renditions at the dances. Conducted by Mr. Miller, the band, which is com- posed of thirteen students, played an important role in promoting the March of Dimes campaign in Eugene High. Throughout the year the ability of this group has spoken for itself, need we add the Dance Band is one ot the reasons we have such an outstanding music department. Row 1: D. LaBare, F. Wilkes, I. Miller, director, Don Mickelwait, president .v Jana! This year a group of musicians, under the leader- ship oi Byron Miller, built up an organization second to none in the state. With a first rating at the Kla- math Falls music contest their prestige was estab- lished, and in Iune they were selected to play as one of the featured bands at the Rose Festival in Portland. When football season rolled around they played at every game and marched in knee-deep mud. Play a huge horn that Weighs you down. Try to pull your feet out of the muck in rhythm to the music, just try it next season! If the student body as a Whole had the spirit the band does no one could ever complain about a lack of enthusiasm at our games. In December they undertook an adventure to Alaska and returned with Worldly wisdom and cher- ished memories. During football season the Band. added color to the games with lively half-time en- tertainment
