J. B. JORDAN, Principal COOPER - MC CLAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The present institution of learning housed at 210 High Street, is Cooper-McClain Elementary School. This building, built in 1937 by the W. P. A., is now occupied by fifth and sixth grade classrooms, as well as two special education classes, and one reading lab. Before becoming a public school at the Cooper-McClain site, the John McGhee School, which was privately owned, was housed here. ln 1968, Cooper-McClain acquired its' new name. The building was named for two fine teachers, Mrs. Effic McClain and the late Miss Ethal Cooper. The same year brought the first principal to Cooper-McClain, George Foremen. One of the present members, Mrs. Evelyn Arterberry, began teaching fifth grade in this building at this time. Over the years many different grades have been taught at Cooper-McClain. 33
