Symphonic Wind Ensemble he 1987-88 Symphonic Wind Ensemble was one of the best ever. The director was William Shafer and under his direction many of the members were expected to participate in the annual district OMEA contest. Members of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble were chosen by au- dition. Each person was required to perform an assigned piece of mu- sic. In addition to the auditon, there was also a sight reading piece which had to be performed. The musi- cians were ranked on the basis of their auditions. The best musicians were chosen from each section and became members of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. . , The Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed concerts in February and in May. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble hoped to attain its highest goals this year since they were familiar with the director that they've had for the past two years. A significant part of this year's program was the acquisi- tion of new band uniforms. -Sally Bierer Synphonlc Wind Ensemble Brass. There were only 38 members this year and almost half of the orches- tra was composed of band mem- bers. Rehersals for just orchestra were every day but every Tuesday and Thursday was a full rehersal. ln the full rehersals there were not only the strings but the brass, the woodwinds and the percussions. The orchestra performed three times during the year. The first per- formance was the Christmas con- cert, then the Winter concert and finally the Spring concert. Orches- tra members also played in the pit for Big Show. Helen Chen was the president of Orchestra while Heidi Martin was vice president and Kim Miller and Maureen DeJong were the librarians.
