ETOWAHIAN ATTALLA, ALABAMA Looking bock on this school year, I see the memories so dear. Each picture lying on each page Is the portrait of a place, an age. These high school years, I say. Are years no one can take away- The ones I loved, the friends I knew. And special people just like you. It's the spirit we must never lose. No matter what new life we choose. To the precious days at Etowah High We must be strong and say good-bye. And though we won't be here for long. These years will leave us with a song. And when we want to hear it again. We’ll trace these pages, from start to end. We have this time but one short while. So treasure every tear, each smile- For these high school years, I say. Are years no one can take away. — Debbie L. Wesson ITOMH UL r 3 • vTi 5 QUEEN Sophomores Freshmen As the 1981 Homecoming Court was pre- sented on the field, all was quiet. Everyone was wondering who would receive the honor of being our new Homecoming Queen. Excitement was everywhere as Christy Lewis, our reigning queen, walked behind the candidates. Applause and cheers filled the air as Kaye Paulsen received the coveted crown. This climaxed a wet but memora- ble day. C OURT 11 O 2 OOrngOl 13 CflSlO-'ZC 17 rn icnmsjT] Even though it rained on our parade, spirits still ran high. Each class worked very hard preparing their floats for the homecoming parade. The juniors and freshmen were both rewarded for their hard work by receiving a tie for first place. The week's exciting events were brought to a climax when the Blue Devils met the Talladega Tigers in the homecoming football game. This select choir, under the direction of Mr. Tom Cole, received a superior rating at both district and state competition. A state superior rating is the high- est honor a choral group may receive. During the past fif- teen years, the Etowah Singers have earned eleven supe- rior ratings. The chgir has presented a Christmas and a Spring Concert and has performed for the Lions' Club, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Union, West End High School and Curtiston Elementary. Their hard work paid off. This year’s cheerleaders kept the EHS winning tradition alive by winning second place at Auburn. They brought home the spirit award — the first ever won by EHS and the coveted congeniality award. Once the school year started, they were busy seeing the Blue Devil spirit was everywhere. They were instrumental in making 1980-81 a memorable year at Etowah. 77 Gino Wo Hon — Monog r W mod Ml La Don no, you work TOO HARDII Th qu—n and h r court 78 79 Cooch Buddy Hoorn Cooch Rots Brooks Cooch Son ford King Bottom Row L to R: Waddell, Mothis, Moson, Stonfield, Chesnvt, Weygond, Howington, Womock, Pratt, Bottles. Robbins The Devils began the 1980 campaign with a heartbreaking 9 6 loss to Gadsden in the mud. The Devils rebounded the next week with a 12-9 victory over Cullman. After a week off the Devils ran out into a very physical Anniston squad, losing two backfield starters to injuries. The Devils lost more to injuries as the season wore on. The last half of the season the Devils took the field with makeshift lineups to replace the hobbled players. Although winning only one game the Devils played together with admirable teamwork and sportsmanship. As a great author once said, “Success is not a measure in result but in progress. 85 BLUE DEVIL 86 L to R: Curtis Goodson, Scott Abney, Stanley Cole, Charlie Potter, Garry Shirley, Fronk Cash, David Martin, Jimmy Haynes. The Blue Devil’s spirit returned to the bas- ketball team this year. This was the best year the Devils have had in the past four years. Under the leadership of Coach Mike Bow- man, the Devils won their first two games of the season. The Devils beat the Gadsden Tigers for the first time in ten years. The Devils won only nine games this year, but they played their hearts out until the final buzzer. The team played with hustle, teamwork, and a die-hard attitude. 89 LADY BLUE L to R: T. How$ r, G. Downey, L. Powell, S. Morgon, L. Croft, K. Moye, C. Douthit, L. Haggard, S. Blackwell, D. Roper, M. Harvey. DEVIL 90 I The girls’ team was young and inexperienced. They had a long season, but with hard work and dedication, they improved. The team played with desire and tenacity, but the stiff competi- tion proved too powerful for our young squad. No matter what the score — our girls were winners. 93 STARS OF TOMORROW B-Teom Basketball: Ed Chapmon, Darren Cole, Mark Daugherty, Jeff French, Kenneth Jacobs, Scott Mokom, Kenny McClendon, Scott Stanfield, Keith Woodall, Coach — David Bowman. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders: Head — Leslie Moon, Co- head — Kelly Paulsen, Tonita Bridenbaugh, Cheryl Lewis, Jono Magee, Wanda Whisenant, Sponsor — Goil Bridenbaugh. 95 BLUE DEVIL VOLLEYBALL Coach Nelda B ason Under the leadership of Coach Beason and many long, hard practices, the volleyball team was very successful this season. The Girls Volleyball team has improved tre- mendously over the years. Although the girls had nine wins and eight losses, their ability to perform as a team enabled them to capture first place in the County Tourna- ment. Lisa Nail was chosen to All-County squad. The team participated in the Region 10 Tournament and won third place. Kim Moye, Lisa Nail, and Kelley Harrelson were elected to the All-Region Team. 96 Torri Q«ts down T om shows spirit 99 BLUE DEVIL TRACK oo Front Row L to R: C. Douthit, D. Whiteside, Q. Aoron, C. Childs. 01 Terry gets with it Do you honostly think you'll win this one? The Etowah track team; due to lack of personnel, inex- perience, and tough competition; had a disappointing season. The rewards of the year were through individual sacrifice and hard work. Coach Farmer feels this year pro- vided experience and future leaders who should help the team in years to come. 103 BLUE DEVIL 104 BASEBALL M. Copland ma m D. Cushing J. Denton The baseball team began with a hopeful outlook. The Devils had a young team, lack of experience, and new coach but played their hearts out every game. The new coach, Larry Fos- ter, has his work cut out for him. With his knowledge and ability and the experience gained by the team this year the Blue Devils should be improved in the future. One of the bright spots of the 80-81 season was when the Devils defeated Sansom 11-9 for the first time in several years. Another bright spot was the sweeping of a doubleheader from Fort Payne. Though the season had its rough spots, it will serve as a character builder for the future. 105 106 Kenny woit for the right one SPORTS w Mork Tucker — Jomes Kilgo Aword, Best Lineman, David Gilmer — Best Back, 1980 Prep All-Americon Football Squod by the National High School Athletic Cooches Association, Garry Shirley — Most Valuable Player Award Greg Arledge — Best Offensive Bock Gorry Shirley — Best Defensive Back Steve Minyard — Outstanding Trock Member Marilyn Waker — Most Outstanding Track Member 108 A WARDS Kaye Paulsen — Most Outstanding Cheerleader, Tino Wood — Helen Childers A word Stanley Cole — Freethrow Aword, Garry Shirley — Tip-off Club Outstanding Player, Frank Cosh — Most Valuable Player, David Mortin — Hardwood Hustle Kim Moye — Most Valuable Player, Susan Morgon — Tipoff Club Award, Chontay Douthit — Hustle Award 25 Club — Stanley Cole, Scott Abney Robin Davis — Most Valuable Volleyball Player, Felinda Howard — Hustle Aword 109 Quonito Lonnette Aoron Money Ann Allefto Harold David Bates I t A Steve Beard Chris Benefield Wilford Eugene Bishop V jtf j Wally Dexter Adams Michael Wayne Barksdale Tony Lamar Baty Anita Whisenant Black Kim Brown Phyllis Ann Brodberry Betty Blevins Keith Dewoyne Bryon Jomes Burns Ricky C. We've shared your laughter and your tears. We've held you up, you’ve seen us through. You’ve been our strength, we’ve strengthened you. We wish to leave you standing strong, We’ll keep your memories and your song. We’ve shared our simple lives with you. We've given our devotion true. Now some will smile, and some will cry. Because it’s time to say good-bye. But you have been a friend to us — Dear Etowah, in whom we trust. Farewell. GRADUATION At Graduating Time The graduates are going forth — God bless them every one! — To run this hard and stubborn world Just as it should be run; But much I fear they'll find that facts Don’t always track with dreams; And running this old world is not As easy as it seems. The graduate is prone to think His wisdom is complete. He’s but to ask — the world will lay Its trophies at his feet. But school days done and work begun. He learns to his regret The college of experience He has not mastered yet. MAY22, 1981 The world has garlands and applause At graduating time; But may forget him the next day When he attempts to climb. Life is a battle where each one Must seek and hold his own. He who would rise above the clouds Must scale the heights alone. This is the rule of life today, As it has ever been: The world bestows its smile on those Who have the strength to win. Beneath all outward semblances It looks for merit true. It little cares how much you know, But asks, what can you do? — author unknown 133 134 . . and although this is the last time we will be assembled together as a Senior Class, we will always cherish that one dear memory: that of being an Etowah Blue Devil.” 135 J u N I O R S CLASS OF “82 )26 Terry Alderson Tonya Anderson Greg Arledge Sabrina Arledge Lisa Arnold Todd Bochalor Jeff Bailey Chip This year’s pro- ject was the painting of the devil on the walls of the lunchroom and the gym. The goal of the Council is to create an atmosphere of cooper- ation among the community, the principal, the faculty, and the students. We would like to thank the students and faculty for their cooperation which helped to make this a great year at Etowah High School. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways. Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun Of happy memories that I leave When life is done. AFTER GLOW by: Carol Mirkel 250 This memorial is on expression of love from the following students: Darlene Gilliland, Lisa French, Teresa Stanfield, Lisa Johnston, Phillip Newsome, Brian Downs, Patti Sweott, Tracy Beasley, and Sharon Blackwell.
