1974 Etowahian 1973 Etowah High School Attalia, Alabama This book is one year of our lives ... one year at Etowah High ... a year that was shared and lived be- tween friends, enriching us with new faces and new responsibilities, old tasks and old places. We learned how to keep our spirits dry under “wet” circum- stances and high under disappointing ones. Some- how we found the time to share our ideas, to ask for advice, and to find satisfaction and happiness in the final product. Living ... with each other, knowing and helping, making our friends. Belonging ... spending our time, involving ourselves for the fin- ished product. Doing ... working together, striving for the final goal. Being ... an individual, not just a face in the crowd, but one particle helping hold it to- gether. And Supporting ... all working for one cause, and in the end the satisfaction of knowing and realiz- ing that we are all basically the same—a human being—living and working in the world shared Be- tween Friends. iV Table of Contents Introduction Living Belonging Doing Being Supporting Closing 3 between • • • between man an is infinite is infinite is infinite and is infinite and immortal is infinite and immortal fifties day ... homecoming production • • • • • initiation LIVING n We’re No. !! Well, we didn’t quite make it this year, but in the hearts of all the Devil fans the mighty Blue will reign Supreme for- ever! The SPIRIT projected at Eto- wah in 74-75 was unbelievable! It began to show at a before-school pep rally and then shortly after school began, it exploded in all di- rections-sounding through the halls, echoing in the gym, and burst- ing across the football field. Partici- pation in the door decorations was outstanding, and the class songs for each pep rally were lyrics for a Devil VICTORY! Devoted fans, en- thusiastic bandsmen, and dedicated cheerleaders kept the players fired up and the spirit rolling all through the year! Individualism Finds a Style of Its Own Personality is a one-of-a-kind thing, many times reflected by the clothes one wears and the different trends he follows. We saw a change in the clothes worn at Etowah this year. There was a change from the regular funky blue jeans to tapestry-like creations done with embroidery, thus reflecting an individ- ualist mood. Another way of giving the individualist touch was wearing bells with one’s own name stamped on them. Long hair has become shorter on both boys and girls. Dresses got longer while heels got higher, showing off wild and unusual socks. “Go West” was the basic trend for shirts, having embroid- ery, studs, and a variety of other personalized put- ons. So being oneself became one of the most signifi- cant ways to create one's total personality. Etowah took a look at its past this year by observing “Fifties Day”. This was a day when everyone came to school dressed in the vintage clothes that their parents may have worn. Sock-hopping, The Stroll and Rock Around the Clock came to our minds as boys in leather jack- ets and greased hair ran around school with girls in bobby socks and pony tails. Many teachers participated with this fes- tivity and looked on as students bopped in the pep-rally that day during the memorable fifties. Fifties Day Homecoming ’75 Festivities for Homecoming '74-75 began with a morning pep ralley followed by a color- ful and spirited parade. Cars of every shape and size streamed of blue and white. Cheers for the Big Blue sounded through the streets. The floats, created by dedicated workers in each class, were the highlight of the parade. Last but not least of the exciting events of Homecoming was the big game at Etowah Bowl where our mighty Devils were faced with the Talledega Tigers. At halftime amidst a court of lovely maids, our beautiful Homecoming Queen, The- resa Henderson, was crowned. 16 4aids and Escorts: Karen Copeland escorted by Donnie Hombuckle. Homecoming 1974 ... “Will all seniors please meet at the American Legion Building and bring a box of white tissue this afternoon?” These came to be familiar words with us as homecoming week approached. So, with some hard work, worrying and tremen- dous effort, three impressive floats were constructed representing the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Finally the big day arrived. With falling-apart floats, scattered people, and anxious onlookers, the winners were announced: “The first place winner is ... The Senior Class!” And tying for second place were the soph- omore and junior classes. After a losing bout with Talladega, many people attended a sock-hop in the school gym. There we revived some of the old songs that were once popular and re- danced some old favorites of yesterday. From Floats to Festivities 21 Holiday spirit was in full swing in the Devil lunchroom Friday Decem- ber 13, the night of Etowah's Christ- mas Dance. Because of the “E” Club’s hard work and the great Sounds of Smokin’ the dance was a big success. So that particular Friday the 13th wasn’t unlucky at all. The only unlucky ones were the ones who missed the dance. 23 V Prince And Princess Senior Favorites Sherry Hammett and Tommy Cox SENIOR Theresa Henderson and David Osborn Cheryl Cylar and Robert Irby Susan Skelton and Donnie Hombuckle Jan Hayes and Phil Hall Pam Bcllew and Doug Chastain ELITE Jan Nelson and Robert Wesson Kim Harrelson and Jon Noojin Lisa Day and Robert Paul Nix Stephanie Matthews and Greg Graves Pam Beck and Lannic Whitt Susan Adcock and Mike Dunn Tammy Anderson and Stan Jones Jill Johnson and Joey Me Elroy Nancy Johnson and Raymond Powell Angie Evans and Mike Dixon Junior Elite Debra Hill and Jeffrey Rowser Leah Glass and Joe Smith Cathy Carden and Will Skelton Junior Favorites Deborah Hulsey I -j— 1 • Kerry Roberson and David rvicClain Sophomore Elite Lynn Brown and Kevin Evans Betty McBumett and Eddie Pcrman Sally Pharr and Brian Hamby Deborah Hill and Andrew Barrax Barbara Downey and Randy Wesson This b the story of a man who gave even hb last morsel be- cause of hb strong love for God and for others. A Christmas Dream 36 NOW SHOWING ... Last year showed us the start of a new interest here at Etowah. It was the start of a Drama Production Class. It stemmed from a play put on by several of our students at the County Drama Festival. Under the guidance of Mrs. Marion Bowen, the class of seniors and juniors grew and produced several plays. The whole school was rewarded by long nights of practice, last minute jam sessions, and a frantic Mrs. Bowen. At the 1975 County Drama Festival, Eto- wah was well represented, especially when Kim Smith was presented as Best Supporting Actress. As the curtain fell, Etowah's drama class had put on five plays and established a lasting interest here at Etowah Rock and Roll The Storm The story of a family Hying lo forgei the past and a man who is seeking to revenge his wife and daughter's death. 37 THE FINAL STEP IN EARNING THE COVETED E” YUK!! The road to becoming eligible for E Club member- ship is not an easy one. It takes a lot of hard work, de- termination and dedication. But once you've earned the eligibility, the final test is the toughest to take. The whole week of initiation was filled with a variety of em- barrassing acts for the rookies to perform. Heads were shaved. Patience wore thin. Then on Friday came the most gruesome, smelly assembly program in the history of Etowah. No mercy was shone. Very deserved “E’s” were earned! 38 200 Students Attend Vocational School In addition to regular classes at Eto- wah, 200 students attend the County Vo- cational School. The purpose of the school is to teach students a trade so they will be prepared for a career after high school. The courses taught are Auto Me- chanics, Body and Fender Repair, Orna- mental Horticulture, Machine Shop, Welding, Air Conditioning and Refrig- eration, Radio and TV Repair, Industrial Electricity, D.E., BOE, Child Care, Food Service, and Drafting. 41 JR.-SR. PROM: JUST YOU ’N ME” It began with a lot of hard working Juniors The Seniors were presented by a very hard working Junior class with a gorgeously decorated prom entitled “Just You 'N Me” Daisies, mushrooms and but- terflies adorned the gym and the spring-time atmosphere was set off by a daisy covered swing and bubbling fountain. We were en- tertained by the “Keystone Road Band” and fed by the Home Ec Department. then the big night arrived .. . wc danced all night ... one last good time together. but slowly wc drifted apart to ‘Just You ’N Me’. ite 1975 SENIOR GALAXY 1. The movies nominated were “The Godfather”, “The Exorcist”, “That's My Momma”, “Young Frankenstein”, “The Longest Yard”, and “American Graffitti”. We had special guest such as Ali McGraw and Steve McQueen. Clint Eastwood, and Elton John. We sang our class song, read our will, prophecy, and history, and shed a few tears now and then. We presented Randall Musick a plaque for “Best Producer and Director of Class Day”. Af- ter the program was over it was ‘party time’ in Guntersville! A lot of fun and hard work went into Class Day and we’d like to thank all of the faculty who helped to make it a success. McCoy gives Iasi minute instructions to graduating seniors. Well Etowah, it’s time to say good-bye, but before we do we'd like to bring back to memory all the good things you’ve done for us and good times we’ve shared together. Do you remember the first time we walked through your doors? Boy, were we scared! But you broke us in right at the pep rallies and we just barely missed win- ning the spirit award. However, we were victorious at homecoming when our float rolled off with first place. We repeated that honor again our Senior year. As for our Junior year, we transformed your gym into an elaborate ‘Garden Party’ and presented the most beautiful prom we’ve ever created. (Of course, that could be be- cause it was the only one we’ve ever created!) Our true Blue Devil Spirit was finally done justice our Senior year when we ran away with the competition for the Spirit Award! You’ve become so much a part of us that it’s really hard to leave you, but we must accept it and grow up and face our futures out from under your wing. We love you, Etowah, and we’ll always cherish the wonderful memo- ries we’ve shared with you. 56 C 5 Wl p cy5 os W Tri Hi Y ... The Beta Club is perhaps the most prestigeous club at any school, and certainly at Etowah. We are proud to state our members are the smartest and most commendable of any club. They are selected on the basis of lead- ership, character, scholarship, and service. Very difficult requirements must be met academically and are strictly enforced. A b-plus average must be maintained throughout the period of membership. Under the supervision of Miss Anne Spurlock, the Beta Club is involved in the community. This year, gifts and donations were collected and distributed at the At- talia Nursing Home. The club also held its annual tap- ping of members for assembly period. Even though its second crop of members did get turned around a bit. They’re so busy planting trees and clean- ing up the community, that their roots got crossed up somewhere and tied in a knot. Or so it seemed, as Mr. Musick trans- formed boys into cheerleaders and girls into big, gruesome football players. But it took just one period for him to realize his mistake and he quickly made adjust- ments. His error turned out not to be a mistake though, for he warmed the hearts of students and teachers alike with laugh- ter and entertainment. But to top it off, and I’m surprised, he tried to cover up by saying it was all planned! From Row: Keith DufTey. Larry McClendon. Karen Hallmark. Jan Hayes. Laura Hood. Cindy Bryant. Let's get some of these good oP things back at Etowah! This year FHA and the Math Club started it off by reviving an almost forgotten tradition here. Our Homecoming Soc-Hop was the first one Etowah had seen in, in who knows when? Sure everyone remembered them, but nobody could say when the last one was held. Math Clubbers weren’t lazy. They raised the money to buy a $129 calculator, held the County Math Tournament here (which we proudly won), and tapped new members. FHA wasn’t far behind. They held a Pizitz fashion show in the gym and refreshed the faculty with punch and cookies at various limes throughout the year. Although the teachers enjoyed it most, these girls are gaining valuable experience for their future lives. When halftime came, so did the rain but the Band played on showing determination and spirit for another year. Competing in the Mid-South Matching Festival, Drum Majorette Debra Hulsey won a superior rating with the rest of the Band receiving an excellent rat- ing. Traveling to Tennessee the Band, Majorettes, Color- guard and Honorguard won a superior rating and the Drum Majorette received an excellent rating. One week later in Douglasville the entire Band won superior ratings making a total of 9 trophies for three marching festivals. The Band marched in Gadsden’s Christmas Parade, the Cerebal Palsy Parade, the American Legion Parade and Jacksonville’s Homecoming Parade in which they placed 1st runner-up. Earlier in the year, the flags also placed 1st runner-up at Jacksonville’s Corps of the Matching Band Camp. For the third year the Band accepted the title “Band of Champions.” Telegrams of congradulations, a police escort home and March 22 being proclaimed Eto- wah Band Day made this year’s trip to New Orleans special. While in New Orleans, the band members prac- ticed hours to assure themselves of a perfect performance on Sunday. I. Etowah’s Home- coming Parade is lead by the colorful Blue Devil Band. 2. PERFORM Straighten that hat, clean and polish shoes, adjust your sash—these are prepara- tions all bandsmen do before every perfor- mance. A lot of time and effort goes into the band's award-winning look. Before these fi- nal preparations many hours are spent per- fecting routines, music, and marching style. While doing this band members must also condition themselves for their strenuous per- formances and the long parade in New Or- leans. This is done by running up and down the stadium steps and around the parking lot. When all of the work and preparation was completed the band made it’s superior showing in New Orleans. Seniors of the honorguard, colorguard, and majorette corps were honored in a pep rally. Junior members presented each girl with a ribboned rose. Left: Janice Holiday accepts her flower from Cynthia Casey. Band members work, travel and perform together. They also share common goals and happiness. Minutes before the big performance, Patsy Thorton makes sure her shoes are spotless. This is one of the many prepara- tions band members are required to do as individuals. Honorguard members Renee Osborn, Karen Hall- mark, and Tammy Sheffield present the Amer- ican flag before each foot- ball game. Trumpet player Mark Morrison and the twirling flags prac- tice an unusual stunt. One which the Etowah Band has re- ceived much praise for. The top of the 11th started off the same with the Aggies scoring one. The Devils came back and scored one and then with bases loaded Harvey Beck hit one through the hole, beating Albertville 7-6. The following day EHS played Sansom. In the second inning Etowah jumped out in front 2-0, but in the third Sansom pulled out in front 3-2. In the bottom of the 6th Etowah got things going and pushed one across to tie things up. Then Sansom put in pitching ace Kenny Wallace with one man on base. David Osborn doubled in the go- ahead run. Then in the top of the 7th EHS pitcher Mickey Gibbs fanned two, and Wallace flied out to end the game 4-3, Etowah still with one bat left. Leah Glass shows much poise and grace on the beam. Their days were filled with pep rallies, decorating doors, making a float, football games, and STUDYING! In February they were confronted with a decision they were happy to make-what kind of class ring to order. As spring months crept nearer and nearer. Juniors worked hard for a Junior-Senior Prom. They went from door to door selling candy to earn money. They persuaded boys to dress like girls for a beauty pageant, which was held during assembly in front of the student body. While watching their Senior friends graduate, the Ju- niors looked forward to taking their places. After being lost for the first week and getting laughed at during the first pep rally, they were ready to head back to Hin- son. However, the Blue Devil Spirit got them, and they decided to stay. Right off they chose ca- pable officers, went out for sports, joined clubs, and marched with the best band Devil Band. Sophomore homerooms deco- rated their doors for the Gadsden game and Mrs. Massey’s home- room won third place. The soph- omore section also won the spirit award at the Gadsden and Al- bertville pep rally. Their home- coming float tied for second place after hours of after school work. After learning their new routine, they fit right in. Class Officers: Pres. Harvey Beck. 1st V.P. Betty McBurnett. 2nd V P. Andrew Barrax. Sec. Sally Pharr. Treas. Kerry Roberson. Byers, Brenda Byers. Paul SWAT: Supervisors, Workers, Administrators, Teachers To the annual sponsor, annual staff, the stu- dents and faculty of Etowah High School: I want to thank you most sincerely for this op- portunity to express the gratitude I feel in my heart for you and for your patience, kindness, friendliness and support during my tenure as your principal. Without the splendid loyalty of an ex- cellent faculty, student body and board of trustees my stay would have been much less pleasant. You. my friends, have enriched my life and given me strength and determination to face my responsibilities with greater zeal. My humble prayer is that I may have done something, however small, for everyone of you which may influence your life for good to the end that each one of us may be able to think right, feel right and act right. Please accept my affectionate regards. Sincerely, Walker Alexander. Football. Track. Psychology. Elona Amos. Guidance Marie Bailey. English. Democracy and Economics Guidance.
