Since the beginning of time, Man has chanced to dream the im- possible dream ... He has fought the unbeatable foe ... He has won ... He has lost. . . During our years at Etowah High School our study of the triumphs and the failures of mankind has impressed upon us that we, too, must reach for the stars despite the chance of failure. The spire atop our stone building, as it points to the stars, serves to remind us that “A man’s reach must exceed his grasp ...” Whereas we set our hopes and sights for the stars . . .We have now virtually reached a galaxy of realizations ... We are Seniors now and we are fulfilling one of life’s greatest achievements . . . We are graduating . . . We are now approaching a remarkable in- terim which is the great gulf separating our aspirations and our accomplishments . . . Through the last twelve years we have span- ned these waters time and again . . . We have sought our stars . . . At times we have found them ... At other times we were not so fortunate . . . We have often dared to run where the brave would not go . . . Unconscious of that which lay ahead, but facing the inevitable with a great deal of acceptance, because we know that life holds many surprises for us all . . . We must now loose the bonds that have always held us and re- place them with the independence and stamina that are necessary to gain success ... By faith in ourselves and in God we shall be successful . . . Thereby taking another step toward the UN- REACHABLE STAR! Audrey Brooks

INTRODUCING... Mr. Joe York came to Etowah this year bringing with him a new “rotating schedule”, club meetings every Tuesday, and an assembly each Friday. This system proved to be a welcome relief for the students, since classes met only four days a week, and each day was different than the one before. Mr. York received his B.S. degree from Jackson- ville University, M.S. degree from Auburn University, and A.A. degree from the University of Alabama. Mr. York served two and a half years with the U.S. Army in New Guinea, Australia. He then became principal of Alexander City Elementary School for two years, Talladega County High School in Lincoln, Alabama for nine years, Greene County High School in Eutaw, Alabama for six years, Glencoe High School for five years, and then here at Etowah High School for an exceedingly long length of time, we hope. As principal of Etowah, Mr. York has had his headaches with the many projects and programs on which each club has worked diligently, but he has always shown excellent patience and abounding good humor. Under his guidance Etowah was able to buy a most coveted royal blue velvet curtain, and the gym received a beautiful paint job. Mr. York is certainly a most respected principal and disciplinarian. The students at Etowah High School realize how fortunate they are to have such a person guiding them.
