BILLY OLIVER KENNETH SEALS JERRY GRAY FOOTBALL REVIEW 1951 ETOWAH 19 - ALEXANDER 13 Playing the first game of the season the Blue Devils encountered the surprisingly strong and deter- mined Tigers of Alexandria. Playing a very sluggish and disappointing game the Devils emerged vic- torious by a 19 to 13 score over the rough and inspired Tigers. ETOWAH 36 - WALKER CO. 0 Against the Vikings the Devils showed more alertness and determination than in the previous game. Sparked by the long runs of Huff and Kelly on punt returns the Blue Devils began to build a lead. The Etowah subs played the majority of the second half, showing some good rough football. The game ended with a 36 to 0 victory for the Devils. ETOWAH 7 - GADSDEN 7 Etowah in the role of underdog, released a potent running attack in the second half to come from behind and tie the score. One of the highlights of the game was the tricky pass which scored the all im- portant extra point. The running of O'Bar stood out, but the entire team played an outstanding game. ETOWAH 32 - B. B. COMER 0 Playing the first half without the assistance of five starting men the score was 6 to 0 at the half. In the second half the much inspired Blue Devils came on the field with determination to win. ETOWAH 34 - ALBERTVILLE 7 Getting off to a slow start in the first quarter, the Devils caught fire in the second quarter and the half ended 20 to 0. With Campbell sitting out the second half due to an injury, Blevins and Mayben did a fine job in leading the team to victory. ETOWAH 22 - SAMSON 0 Samson, starting off with a bang, clicked off three first downs before being stopped on the 20. After that it was all Etowah with the game ending 22 to 0. ETOWAH 19 - TUSCALOOSA 0 On November second the Etowah Blue Devils met the strong Northport Wildcats of Tuscaloosa Coun- ty. It was the annual homecoming and was played in wind and rain. Huff was the big gun with two touchdowns and gave the Devils a 19 to 0 victory. ETOWAH 13 - WEST END 6 On Thursday, November 8th, the undefeated Blue Devils journeyed to Legion Field in Birmingham to meet the strong West End Lions. Playing a brilliant brand of football the first half, the Blue Devils racked up two touchdowns before the Lions caught fire and held the Blue Devils to a 13 to 6 victory. ETOWAH 6 - GADSDEN 7 A crowd of 15,000 hysterical fans saw the undefeated Blue Devils go down in defeat for the first time in 36 games. This game was like the pre-season game with Gadsden dominating the first half and Etowah the second. The Devils were hampered in the second half for the lack of their quarterback James Campbell who went out with a broken arm. The fighting Devils staged a desperate drive in the last quarter but were halted by a penalty and the game ended Gadsden 7 Etowah 6.
