'Ike ETOWAHIH 1950 ETOWAH HIGH SCHOOL ATTALLA, ALABAMA Gatke m UtiaAk i THE IIEHId TIHH We, the Senior Class of 1950, dedicate this volume of the ETOWAHIAN to Catherine Brasher with sincere regard for her help to us in the past. Through her efforts and with her help the 1948 and 1949 annuals were published; with her kind assistance the 1950 annual is being published. Always we have found her willing to listen to our problems and ready with advice. Her sympathy and understanding of the students' point of view has endeared her to us all. HISTORY OF ETOWAH The land upon which Etowah County was founded was purchased from the Cherokee Indians in 1832; however grants to white settlers were not issued until 1840. Etowah properly written is Ette- wah ; derived from two Cherokee words Ette meaning tree and Wah meaning good. Etowah County High School was established in 1907. The first assembly was held in the Stowers Building on Third Street, just one block south of the L N passenger depot on Monday morning, Sep- tember 21, 1908. There were forty-five pupils enrolled, representing the four years of high school work. Of this number thirty-six were in the freshman class and three in each of the other three grades. The principal was Mr. W. E. Turnipseed and his assistant. Miss Alice Coleman. Only academic work was offered and the school fulfilled every state requirement for college affiliation. The first commencement exercise was held in the Methodist Church of Attalia on the night of June 4, 1909, with Bishop Hoyt M. Dobbs delivering the address of the evening. The following young ladies were presented with diplomas; Hassie Preston, Mary Mitchell, and Myrtis Farris. Thus passed into his- tory the first year of Etowah County High School. The second year of school opened September 22, 1909 in the Stowers Building, as the new build- ing was not yet complete. In February, 1910, the new school building was formally dedicated. After the first two years of the establishment of Etowah County High School, the enrollment began to increase rapidly. From the original enrollment of forty-five the school reached the peak of enroll- ment in 1950 when there were over one thousand pupils in attendance. The following men have had the honor of serving as principal of the school; W. E. Turnipseed 1908-1910 A. W. Ray 1932-1935 C. M. Dannely 1911-1912 W. H. MacGregor 1935-1936 J. R. Kimbrough 1912-1916 L. C. Warr 1936-1937 H. A. Pettus 1916-1918 C. Q. Baxter 1937-1941 Oscar Horton 1918-1919 H. E. Williams 1941-1942 J. 1. Riddle 1919-1925 T. N. Snead 1942-1944 W. V. Luckie 1925-1927 R. C. McCulley 1944-1947 F. D. Dowdy 1927-1928 R. F. Bailey 1947- Ben S. Copeland 1928-1932 In October, 1931, ground was broken for the gymnasium. The gym came to be known as Noah's Ark. During the summer of 1947, Noah's Ark was torn down and replaced by a modern, concrete dressing room for boys athletics. In the year 1936, $11,000 was appropriated by the Federal Government for improvement of the school grounds. This fund was used for the complete remodeling of the football field. The year 1938 was marked by the organization of the Student Senate. 1939 brought a new sister to our Alma Mater — the new building. It was during this year that our Student Creed, as written by Roger Holmes and Charles Rowan, was adopted. This was also the red letter year when the Etowah High Band was organized. Our school Emblem was adopted in the year 1940, and the first flag of Etowah High School was unfurled. The emblem was also placed upon the official seal of the school. The year 1941 and 1942 found many of our boys entering the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Many of them distinguished themselves by deeds of valor, and we shall not forget those who sacrificed their lives. In 1944 the traffic system was adopted by the Senate. 1945 is one of the red letter years in Etowah's history. This was the year when the Etowah Blue Devil conquered the Gadsden Tiger in the annual football classic, after having been defeated by him over a considerable stretch of years. We, the editors of the 1950 Etowahian, hope that this book will be a constant reminder of the joys and sorrows we have shared together during our high school days at Etowah. ADMINISTRATION FACULTY R. THE SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1944 a tribe of trembling seventh graders trouped into the vast tepee of Eto- wah High School. We were terrified at the thought of getting lost while changing classes. How could we ever do it? Our minds tortured us at the thought of being separated from our other classmates and meeting face to face with Heap Big Mr. McCulley. We finally found our homeroom and started looking for our classrooms. Why wasn't room 7 next to room 8? We soon settled down to life at Etowah. We made many friends and soon got to know our teachers. We elected Mary Sue Patton as president of our class. Life went on at a pretty good pace and not many of us stayed lost very long. The next year we knew where everything was and didn't have any trouble at all. Heap Big Mr. McCulley still frightened us out of our skins, but we were getting used to it now. Yellow Moon Pat Pharr was elected president of our class and led us on to our Freshman Class where we were join- ed by many friends from Attalia City School. We practically passed through that year like an arrow. Jump and Holler James Ray Johnson was elected president and during that year we participated in some of the activities of the school. This was the year of '47 and looking back we had a perfectly wonderful time. Of couse, we had our exams to worry over but nevertheless we had three more years to make up for what we failed. Next came our Sophomore year and Jump and Holler Johnson was elected again as Big Chief of our class. That year we were undefeated in football, but we tied Gadsden in the Charity Bowl Game. We lost only two road games in basketball, also we went on to win the state championship. Heap plenty good year. Our school was presented many beautiful trophies that now stand in the trophy cabinet at school. We will never forget Excel Hester, the Brave Warrior of sports during that year. After our Silly Sophomore escapade, school was out and the squaws and braves were free for the summer. After the summer we came back as Jolly Juniors to our dearly beloved reservation. This year seems more clear to us because it was just a year ago. We chose Buffalo G. B. Beasley as our president and settled down for another year of work and fun. We were a pretty important class; even the Seniors were nice to us. They were very dignified and we longed for the day when we would be the head braves of the school. Our success in sports was not to end this year. We lost only one game — to Gadsden — but came back to tie Gadsden in the Charity Bowl Game again. M. L. Walker and Richard Driskell were our football warriors. This year Mrs. Gilliland, Miss Trammell, and Miss Hazelrig were our sponsors. We had the job of entertaining the Seniors and we did exceptionally well in doing it. We decorated the gym very beautifully and everyone had a wonderful time at the dance. Finally school was out and everybody was happy or everyone that passed. Summer vacation came and left like a breeze and we came back to dear 'ole Etowah as Seniors to begin our last glorious year at the aging old building and the more modern flagstone building, which have become so dear to our hearts. King Fish Bill Talbot was chosen to guide us through our last year. We started school with a bang but it wasn't such a bang-up affair as we expected. We had to buckle down to work or we would be back at Etowah again in 1951. Our warriors tomahawked and massacred everyone of our opponents and beat Gadsden in the Charity Bowl Game, the score at the last being 6-0. This was the first year since 1913 an Etowah team had won all of its games. In 1947 the only blot was a tie with Gadsden in the post season game. Our success was due to the untiring efforts of boys and coaches, under the tutelage of Coach Jim Glover we have lost only one game in three years. Coach Clyde Childers was back to help in every way as he has done so wonderfully all through the years. This year much credit goes to our likeable assistant Coach Mark Colburn. He did a magnificent job, as the record of our line shows. These three men are a great team. As time went on Macbeth became our last year's worry. The responsibility of the Etowahian and The Blue and White now rested on our shoulders. We went to the football games and cheered as we had never cheered before. Our school showed the finest display of school spirit that it had shown in years. Our last weeks at Etowah were filled with excitement; first, our Stunt Night and the Corona- tion of the Queen of Etowah, then our Class Day program, and last, our graduation. These last days were filled with joy and a tinge of sadness for we wouldn't see some of our classmates ever again. Never- theless, we were filled with memories of our school days at Etowah. These will live on with us through- out Etowah and our lives. All the fun we have had and all the joys of the past four years will stay within our hearts and whenever we see the great colors Blue and White we will have reverence in our hearts for the school that we loved. Now we shall bid you adios. BOBBIE BLEVINS DOUGLAS SMITH G. B. BEASLEY JAMES RAY JOHNSON SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Looking around the crowded table, I just can't realize that my old friends of the class of '50 have changed so much. Yet when I think back how they were in 1950, they really haven't changed much; it's that they have become men and women and have made a successful life for themselves. You know, it's funny how an alumni banquet at a class homecoming reunion can bring back so many sweet memories of our old E. H. S. days. Everyone is trying to get a word in to find out what everyone has been doing in the past ten years. Well, Martha Abney is still working at 5th Avenue Jewelers. She said she has had three pro- posals in the past year, but has turned them all down, because she is still waiting for Ray (Soup) Ayers, the great football star. Yes, he is now a big coach at Auburn. Good luck Marthb. I guess all of you remember William Hegwood. Well, he is happily married now. (Shall we just say married?) William has bought our Piggly Wiggly and (they say) is doing well. Of course, what else could you expect from a guy like William? Jack Livingston is still playing professional football. He said when he got too old for playing he would start coaching if he could get a good offer. Yes, all the girls that go to Auburn say that Bobby Jones is still passing chewing gum to all the pretty girls. (You do remember Bobby, don't you?) Keep trying Bobby, you might land one of those Auburn peaches after all. They say Johnny Blackwell has a large farm on Sand Mountain. I hear he is doing fine with his crops, but could do better if it wasn't for the old boll weevil. I know you all remember our pretty Betty Ryals. She has just signed a contract with Twentieth Century Fox. Her first picture is, Hold That Blonde. Her leading male, is none other than that handsome Jimmy Rich. Looking back to E..H. S. we find that Mary George Foreman is teaching English and Doris Nelson is teaching Physical Education. Lots of the girls in our class were really successful with their lovers. Here are just a few of the ones that I know have married since we finished. Otsie Bearden, Nellie Claburn, Mattie Lee Taylor, and Betty Whisenant. Margaret Spinks is happily married and has three children. She and Thomas live on Rainbow Drive. Margaret keeps the house and looks after the children while Thomas works at the steel plant. Evangeline Pettit has a music school on Broad Street now. She has about fifty students and en- joying the work fine. We hear that Peggy Aldridge has a new short bob. Very becoming, but such a shock. Seems that Elaine Blackwell's smile along with those dimples has helped hook the man of her dreams. Gallant has lost one of its beauties, Carolyn Burgess. She is now Mrs. Durwood Campbell and they are residing in Switzerland where Durwood is working with the government. Ann Cox is now vocalist of her husband's orchestra at J. S. T. C. Edna Faye Grady now has the other ring to match the one she was wearing when we were seniors. Line: Hall, Yocum, O'Bar, Farmer, Beasley, Livingston, Hester. FOOTBALL REVIEW - 1949 ETOWAH 59 - GLENCOE 0 The Blue Devils got off to a slow start but before the half had put the game on ice. With the subs playing almost all the second half the score still continued to rise. • Colegrove led the scoring with three touchdowns. The entire line was outstanding. ETOWAH 45 - JASPER 6 With the offense clicking better than at any other time during the season we rolled to a 45-6 victory. There were no individual stars as everyone on the team was clicking to perfection. ETOWAH 6 - GADSDEN 0 After hanging two scalps to their belts our red hot Blue Devils were out to add that of the Gadsden Tigers to the collection. Our line dominated the game throughout. We fumbled 8 times — 3 within the 10 yard stripe. Talbot was the star of the game with his spectacular running and punting. Hester played all of the game. ETOWAH 25 - DeKALB COUNTY 6 The visitors from DeKalb County threw a scare into the Etowah fans by scoring first. After we began to solve their defense there was little doubt as to the outcome of the game. The line led by O'Bar played great ball. Townsel scored three touchdowns. ETOWAH 31 - COMER 25 In one of the longest, and without a doubt the wildest scoring games ever played in the county, we defeated Comer 31-25. Our great line held Comer 7 downs within the 4 yard line and then opened holes for the backs to march the distance of the field in eight plays. Each player was outstanding — especially Talbot on punt returns. ETOWAH 18 - ALBERTVILLE 0 Following a couple of fumbles the boys in blue began to roll and defeated a strong Albertville team 18-0. Our fast, shifty backs aided by the line chalked up the sixth victory of the year to continue on their undefeated march. ETOWAH 18 - SANSOM 2 In a hard fought game with the Rebel eleven our boys added another victory to their string. At the opening of the second half Townsel, behind perfect blocking returned the kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown—his third of the game. The game cost heavily, however, as Talbot was sidelined with a badly injured leg. ETOWAH 19 - NORTHPORT 12 Northport, with their big team and Quarterback Carl Rice, put up a whale of a battle but the boys from Etowah were not willing to quit for anything less than a victory. A 50 yard pass from Campbell to Hester clinched the victory. ETOWAH 20 - TALLADEGA 9 Trailing at half-time by 9 points the Devils made a sensational comeback to defeat the Talladega Tigers. We fumbled 6 times within the 10 .yard line before scoring. For the third time this year Townsel scored 3 touchdowns. Huff filled in wonderfully for Talbot as did Wesson and Brothers for Colegrove. The line — from end to end was something to watch as the ones who started the game played most of it, with Beasley playing all 48 minutes. CHARITY BOWL GAME ETOWAH 6 - GADSDEN 0 In the third annual Charity Bowl Game we met Gadsden for the third time. The two previous games having ended in ties. In the last three minutes of play Hester scored on a 55 yard pass from Campbell. We had the ball on Gadsden's 1 yard line as time ran out in the first half. Both teams played their hearts out and it was a great victory for everyone concerned because the proceeds go for a truly worthy cause. Billie yappi di yap Ledbetter has been seen lately riding a motorcycle, celebrating her latest title as a Powers Model. Betty Sue McDonough, having finished her college education, is now giving private trumpet les- sons to students at Etowah High. Nell Oliver has made headlines after returning from a trip to South Africa where she was a mis- sionary. Her husband, Super Sailor, accompanied her. The sign on the door of Lawyer Pilcher's office has changed from Pilcher Lawyer to Pilcher and Pilcher Lawyers, now that Mr. Pilcher's daughter, Mary, has moved her office in with him. Miss Janelle Silvey is now an accomplished secretary in the White House — thanks to Miss Mc- Clendon's commercial teaching. Jean Stimpson can be seen in the famous Blue Light Night Club on Broadway singing the hit which made her famous, Blues in The Night. Seems Edna Thompson Ledbetter has dragged out her overalls again since she and her husband, Junior, have bought a farm out at Keener. Mollie Willett and her good naturedness have made a hit at Auburn where she has just helped cheer the Tigers through another win. Mollie had a lot of help in this cheering from that ex-cheerlead- er, Ralph Red Barron. We read in the papers where Harold Chumbley has again won the National Champion Daredevil title. By the way, he is still driving that same maroon Ford. Some car to have taken that treatment. Kenneth Garrard is professor at Etowah Hi where he is sponsor of the Beta Club of which he was president his senior year. Ira Hobgood is still trying to get enough credits to get out of high school but just can't give Miss Trammell the definition of a verb. Robert Lee has just been promoted to chief Commander up at the military institute in Tennessee. His wife. Sue, and their three children are living quite leisurely on that fat salary. The other day as I was visiting at Etowah I thought I'd go over to visit my economics teacher, Mr. Parker, but whom should I find but Russell McDaniel. Seems that Russell liked B-2 so well that he took over when Mr. Parker left. Our little classmate Doug Smith, is now traveling with Ringling Brothers Barnum Bailey Circus as the shortest man alive. Kenneth Romeo Tidwell is still as handsome as ever and is now the owner of a hotel in Florida. He has quite a floor show each night with his chorus girls: Homer Cooke has arranged his own chemistry class and is trying violently to keep his pupils from cheating. Here is a woman on stage — what can she be doing? Making a political speech? Yes, it's none other than Robbie Jean Perry. Mr. Parker can be seen sitting on the first ro . We read in the paper the other day that Frances Yates and Bobby Wesson are now engaged. (Secretly). Frances is so young (only 26). They are contemplating marriage next year if they can keep her mother locked in the closet. Russell Harris is still running around trying to find a girl with money enough for him to consider going with. (Continued) SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY (Continued) Wilmer Make it Rhyme Womack has given up his career as a famous song writer to become an undertaker. He is now training girls to be lady embalmers. He hasn't spoken a dozen words the past ten years. Sally Chumbley gave up trying to find a mat and is now Alabama's first woman representative in Congress. After having served ten years in the Army, Pvt. Nelson Shorty Johnson has been promoted to Private First Class. Congratulations! May your advancement continue. Keith Whisenant has advanced to head waiter at the Pan Am Palace. Sybil Washburn has made a great success. Robert Isabell and Eugene Kerr did not let a little thing like graduation keep them from wrestling. They meet every Wednesday night for old times sake. Robert Medlin has just wen another trophy in basketball. I see that Marie Simmons finally decided to settle down and leave Harriet and Martha's boy friends alone. All except Jimmy Rich. Freda Williams and her hubbie now own a grocery store on Rainbow Drive. Wot hoppen, Freda? I don't understand Donald Colegrove has quit professional football. Could it be that Ann Sitz talked him into it? Barbara Medlin is taking a course in first aid. Keep up the good work, Barbara. Nancy Blackburn has just purchased a new convertible space ship. She was doing a booming business in shoe designing until Bertha Copeland invented a new type body motor that makes shoes useless. Bertha has been going steady with one of those darling robot men who helped her with her in- vention. Nancy now has a new business on the moon that no one can stop a matrimonial office. Wendell Dowdy has incorporated a coffee brewing company. Their slogan is For coffee brewed like Indians like it, drink Ooh Wee Coffee. Jerry McCain is a well recognized song writer. His latest hit is Put on the Frying Pan, Mother, I'm Coming Home, from his musical comedy, Bring Home The Bacon. He has scored 13 hits, one for each of his children. Betty Bullard, Frances Alexander, and Bonnie Kate Hood are now very successful in the soap opera, Falling from Mars, better known as I Don't Get Around Much Anymore. (Continued) GEORGE P. Willodean Nichols is doing her part for the country by entertaining service men overseas. Patricia Pharr just made a record of having the most chain stores in this country. Their motto is A Pharr is always up to par. Willodean Scott has just married and settled down to a quiet life. Quite a feat in this day and time, don't you think. Irene Sprayberry is the owner of a baking powder factory. Their slogan is, You may get him with face powder, but takes Sprayberry's baking powder to hold him. Martha Thompson is a nurse at the old people's home in Washington. She is doing quite a job. Loretta White is singing in the Black Quartet. She sings solos sometimes. G. W. Barnes is selling reducing pills to the fat man's convention that is now meeting. Billy Brothers is doing his heart's desire of styling hair in New York. •Spurgeon Hollingsworth is working for The Friendly Loan Company. It seems that by the time he gets his talk done the people feel so sorry for him that they borrow money to keep him in business. Paul Jordan plays basketball for The House of David. He is the smallest man on the team. Eugene Robertson is running a shoe store for men. He is off trying to sell women's shoes. Earl Wynn has a big farm at his old home town of Gallant. Barbara Bayne is still happily married and raising her family of three. Juanita Hall now owns her own peroxide factory and her business is really booming as all her old friends at Etowah can confide in her. Bettye Roberts is celebrating her victory as Mrs. America. She finally married Jug Bruce to be eligible for the contest. Yoeman Conner is now doing fine as manager of N. B. C's. Television Department. I hear Frances Yancey has a part on his program as a news commentator. James Ray Johnson is now admired by all the young ladies who wish to be first lady of the U. S., he finally made it to the top. Betty Jo Jordan finally landed a man, Fred Wally from Albertville. I'll have to hand it to you Betty. Bobby Mullinax just donated the City of Gadsden fog lights so it wouldn't be any trouble getting to The Brow on foggy nights. We wish to congratulate quiet Arlene Boggs on winning the title of Best Personality of Sand Moun- tain. I always thought that all the teachers liked G. B. Beasley, but never thought it would go as far as winning the Teachers Best Pet at the University of Alabama. I now hear he is the assistant to the Dean of Physical Ed. at Montevallo — Isn't that a girl's college? Joyce Butler is now a Professor of Psychology at Judson. Joan Livengood has taken over the job as manager of Elmore's after retiring her father at the age of 93. Betty Moon finally married the man of her dreams. We heard she and her husband had a little trouble at first. Harriet talked so fast he couldn't understand a word she said. Geraldine Beard is now a full fledged nurse. She and Martha Thompson stroll hand in hand down the long white corridors and tell of their many blood curdling experiences. What a happy lot we turned out at E. H. S. Helen Holdbrooks, after starting out as secretary, is now Vice-President of Goodyear. Who says women don't belong in the business world? We all remember Wynell Lumpkin — she always told us about Morris and Auburn. After ten years she is still dating Morris and going to Auburn. She really loves that school. We see one of our former classmates, Lila Mae Sitz, has brought her children (all ten of them) over to see how E. H. S. is making out without her. Bobby Jean Lockmiller now owns a rodeo. Not onfy does she perform dangerous fetes but enter- tains at intermission by playing tunes on her alto horn. We often see Mrs. Childers in the stands. I wonder why?
