Many hours of hard work went into the publication of this yearbook. Drawing up a layout, gathering data, writ- ing history, making pictures, identifying pupils, typing copy, and proofreading are just a few of the many jobs that had to be done. Each member of our class had a specific job to do. Many other people—teachers, advisers, publishers, photographers—cooperated in a splendid way. We would like to thank them for their time and effort. CORINA HOOTS, Features Editor; DEWITT McCARSON ' and FRED SUMNER, Assistants. The Business Staff led a successful sale of the yearbook by taking subscriptions for 175 copies of The Chief for 1960. The Advertising Staff sold advertising space in The Chief to our business friends in Henderson, Buncombe, and Transylvania counties. For their continued support of our school, we express our sincere appreciation. In the years to come, we hope that this yearbook will be one of the favorite books on your library shelf. Although there were many who were interested in this work, Mr. Howard T. Sitton, Principal of the school, took the lead. During the spring of 1949, several meetings were held for the purpose of arousing more interest. On May 2, 1949, a group of parents and teachers met and voted to organize the Etowah PTA. On May 10, 1949, Mr. Sitton, assisted by Mr. Nicholas Sentelle, installed the board of officers with Mrs. Earl Gray as the first president. The membership has grown from 78 in 1949 to254 in 1960. During the PTA's eleven years in existence, it has supported numerous improvement projécts. Lockers for students use were installed in the halls, seats built in the new gymnasium playground equipment purchased. An inter-communication system was installed in 1956. Equipment for the kitchen and dining room of the new lunchroom was the 1958-60 project. Other items-—too numerous to list-—have been added tothe school property. Throughout the years interesting, informative, and educational programs have been presented at the PTA meetings. The association sent representatives to the Institute, Work-Shop, and State Conventions, and to the State Assembly in Raleigh torepresent the cause of the schools. It became a memberof the Henderson County Council of Parents and Teachers, Mrs. John Crisp, President; Mrs. John Murdock, Pub- licity Chairman; and Mrs. Frank Drake, President of Henderson County PTA Council. Each year the PTA supported the drive for the N. C. Symphony Orchester, Friends of the Library, Public Health Drive, March-on-Polio, and conducted a Pre-School Clinic. The Fall Festival was held each year as the major fund-raising project of the organization. A High School Curriculum study was made in 1959-60.. Since this was the last year Etowah had a High School, thought was given to the organization of a PTA for the new high school. Each classroom chose a boy and girl as representa- tives in the Popularity Contest of the Fall Festival. The battle then began with each classroom trying to get the most votes for their contestants. Then came the night of the Fall Festival, filled with fun and excitement and the crowning of the king and queen for the following year. All proceeds from each phase of the evening's entertainment went into the Parent-Teachers Association treasury for pro- jects which they carry out at school. This year's project sponsored by the P.T.A. was helping to pay on the indebtedness on the lunchroom equipment and furnishings. F.H.A. members making gifts for retarded children. ke) Class History Of 1960 As we, the Seniors of 1960, looked back through the years, many mem- orable events flashed through our minds. Was it really twelve years ago when we entered the first grade—scared and full of excitement? Coming to our rescue to start us on our search for knowledge was Mrs. Ethel Hensly. As time went by Mrs. Loee Turner, Mrs. Kate Dalton, Mrs. Margaret Combs, Mrs. Effie Keller Stepp, Mrs. Vera Morgan, Mrs. Claribel Clark, and Miss Bessie Jordan led us further into the sea of learning. Another exciting occasion in our lives came when we finally reached high school, undecided and uncertain. High school was new, different, and a little befuddling! Mrs. Nelle Dotson and Mr. Robert Bruce, as ninth grade sponsors, reached out to help, to guide, and to lead us on inour quest for knowledge. We were delighted to find that we would have a different teacher for every subject, and we wore our name ''Freshmen ' proudly. The half-holiday we received for winning the King and Queen contest is another adventure that will always be remembered. The boys chose a Camping trip to Pisgah National Forest, while the girls took a picnic to Chimney Rock Park. It might have been a very wise choice if the boys had gone with the girls, because no sooner had they settled down for the night than the rain began to pour. But in the end both groups had momentous times. The boys remember many fun-filled days in Agriculture Shop with Mr. Henry Lovin, Mr. Elbert Upton, and Mr. Rex Ashburn. Long to beremembered are basketball practice sessions and games with Coach Harry D. Woodson and Coach Willard Roberts leading us to many victories. Time passedon and we were Sophomores led by the guiding hand of our sponsor, Mr. Willard Roberts. Another trip to Chimney Rock Park was taken this year by both boys and girls, and it was a highlight of the Sophomore year, The boys really had anexperience—never tobe forgotten—a sampling of the Sophomore girls' cooking! And of course, there are memories of Mr. Sitton's biology class—with its bugs, frogs, and snakes—that will lin- ger in our minds forever. Time passed on quickly as we became Juniors. We were met by an old friend, Mrs. Nelle Dotson, who resumed her position as our loyal leader for another year. With the aid of Mrs. Jane Cassady, she helped us to prepare and present our Junior Class Play, Finders Creepers. The biggest and most outstanding event of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet, which would have been impossible without the helpful, guiding hands of Mrs. Dotson. The banquet was held May 2, at the George Vanderbilt Hotel in Asheville. The theme for the banquet was With A Song In My Heart. Guests on the program were Disc Jockey Kenneth McCarson and The Kopy Kats with Betty and Veronica, all from New York City. The day for which we had all waited and dreamed came at last! We were Seniors! We were greeted with a warm smile and a cheerful voice by Mrs. Lucy Sitton. There will always be a place in our hearts for her, be- cause without her love, understanding, and patience we never could have presented aSenior Play, earned money forour trip to Washington, published a yearbook, or mastered shorthand, typing, or bookkeeping. Mrs. Sitton helped make the senior year a most notable one. Then our high school life came to an end, but our school days will be cherished and long remembered. Each one looked toward the future with high hopes of fame, fortune, and success.
