star, and the soul his own “4 Man SPER Picea mee The 1959 Chief Published by The Senior Class Etowah High School Etowah, North Carolina Foreword . We, the Senior Class of 1959, have included with- in the covers of this yearbook some of our dearest friends, favorite places, and cherished memories which can never be forgotten. The stars sparkling in our eyes at the time of our graduation represent a mixture of emotions—both of. joy and of sorrow. Joy is felt because of friendships established, ambitions accomplished, and knowledge gained; sorrow, because an era of our life has ended. We sincerely hope that in years to come, ouryear- book will bring to others who read it as much pleasure as we have had in its publication. We now submit to you, THE 1959 CHIEF. DEDICATION In appreciation for your sincere guidance during our school years, we, the Senior Class of 1959, would like to dedicate this yearbook to you, MR. SITTON, our principal and friend. Because of your unfailing interest, your encouragement, and your devotion to us and to our school, we have successfully reached this point in our life for which we have been striving. To you, Mr. Sitton, whom we shall never forget and to whom we are all grateful, we dedi- cate this yearbook. Finally, funds were made available for the building and construction was started in the spring of 1958. After watching and waiting, some- what impatiently, we were served our first hot lunch on November 4, 1958, Everyone was very much pleased with the new cafeteria. We would like to thank our county superintendent, Mr. J. M. Foster, and the Henderson County Commissioners for the part they had in making this avail- able for us. We want to express our sin- cere gratitude to allthe parents, teachers, and students who worked diligently during the past year on various money-making projects tohelp furnish the necessary new kitchen equipment and the attractive dining room furniture. During the next eight years, the nebulae grew larger with the addition of Joni Fletche r, Joan Hendricks, Brenda McLean, Ardith Fulle, Douglas Owens, Bobby Ray Owens, Ewart Smith, Carolyn Brown, Jewell Murphy, Sandra Hutchinson, Betty Jean | Griffin, Eula Mae Suttles, Helen Morgan, and Dickie Connor. At times the way seemed dark; but with the help of our guiding stars, Mr. Sitton and his faculty, we continued on our fixed path until we reached a higher level, high school. About this time our celestial body was completed with the addition of Wanda Kay Strickland, who came to us from another planet, Brevard High School. An ambition that most ofus hadwhen we were freshmen was to participate on one of our champion basketballteams. Though all could not take part as players, there was a place for everyone either as a cheerleader or a fan on the sidelines; andwe cheer- | ed our classmates on to many victories. We will never forget the night the boys rolled over the Flat Rock Blue Devils and the night the girls were victorious over the Fletcher girls. During the sophomore year we began a series of picnics at Woodlake Farms which will always stand out as our favorite recre- ation spot. The Junior Play, Which Shall He Marry? required many hours of memorizing, but was also full of fun and laughter. Another highlight of the junior year was our Junior-Senior Banquet with its theme of Candyland. The Country Club will always have a special place in our memories for it was the sight of this merry and sprightly event. During the senior year, we will never forget the day our class rings arrived. They will forever hold their sparkle and lustrous appearance, even through years of wear, The painstaking work on the annual was worth while when the first copy was received | and proudly displayed. The Junior-Senior Banquet, one of the highlights of the spring, was most enjoyable. The top dramatic event of '59 was the senior play, Grandma's Best Years. Throughout its orbit, this group of stars has reached the peak of its brilliance and will become static in a stately manner as far as its days in high school are concerned, on May 22, 1959, we will be leaving in body but not in spirit. Always the senior class of '59 will remember Etowah High School as a place for friendship, knowledge, play; and ourteachers as the ones who started us on our road to a life of success and happiness, ; { } | II.
