They have continued to give the award each succeed- ing year. Alsoin 1956, the Parent Teacher Association of Etowah School awarded Scholarship Medals to the students of grades four through twelve who had excelled in scholarship as well as citizenship. Twenty-seven pupils received these awards at the last chapel exercises in May, 1957. WHO'S WHO High scholastic averages prove that the Seniors’ choice of Shirley Riddle as MOST INTELLECTUAL was correctly chosen « Athletic ability as well as good sportsmanship made Sylvene Wilkie and Vernon Huggins the Seniors' choice as MOST ATHLETIC. Always ready with a sympathetic ear is our MOST UNDER- : es : Loe STANDING Senior, Margie Orr. i — Because of their clever ways and nice appearance, Donna Crisp and Carl Barnett are our CUTEST couple. IN 1958 Diligent work that brings commendable results by Wanda Sumner made her our choice of our Senio r MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED. Good looks and a well-rounded per- sonality make Louise Blankenship and Richard Brown our MOST POPULAR Seniors « Strong determination and the will to get ahead were what we saw in Jacqueline McCrary when she was chosen as MOST Athletic achievement and the ability AMBITIOUS. to do the things she most enjoys makes Johnnie Robinson our MOST VERSATILE Senior. MARSHALS FOR GRADUATION, MAY 1957 Left to Right: Shirley Riddle-Chief, Margaret Byrd, Wanda Sumner, Arnetta Ledbetter, and Louise Blankenship. HISTORY OF THE Aswereach this goal post in life and look back over the past twelve years, our hearts are filled with love and appreciation. Many have made it possible for us to reach this goal. Most of all we would like to thank our parents for their guiding hands . Each year, too, a new teacher has lent us a helping hand. For Wanda Sumner, Louise Blankenship, Margie Orr, Janice Moffitt, Carolyn Blythe, Johnnie Robinson, Sylvene Wilkie, Lowell Fletcher, Vernon Huggins, J. E. Young, and Carol Cable, 1946 was an exciting year. Under the guiding hands of Mrs. Clyde Hensley, we learned the meaning of going to school. A new world was opened to us -a world of learning and new friends. The hands of Mrs. Loee Turner began to direct us in our second year in the ways of behavior and study. Louise Blankenship left, and Mary Evelyn Fulle joined us. Very uncertain and undecided we began our third year. Under the guiding hands of Mrs. Kate Dalton and Mrs. Lucy Sitton, we gained confidence. Jeannene Coston joined us, and Louise Blankenship came back from Brevard. As the fourth began, we had two leaders, Mrs. Margaret Combs and Mrs. Claribel Clark. Their influence and guidance prepared us for the next year in our school life. Mrs. Effie Stepp took command in the fifth grade and by her firm hands we learned the meaning of discipline and study. Arnetta Ledbetter joined us in this year. Mrs. Vera Morgan used her hands wisely to lead us on in our quest for knowledge. Mrs. Perry was there to instill in us a love for music. Shirley Riddle and Jackie McCrary were added to our group. The outstanding event in the sixth grade was a picnic in May plus a spring shower. The subject matter of the seventh grade was difficult, and only by the guidance of Mr. Wade Worley were w e able to suc- ceed. We also had Mrs. Lucy Sitton, who instructed us in arithmetic which we (trying to be grown up) called Math. Next, Miss Bessie Jordan became our loyal leader, using her hands and talents to acquaint us with Junior High School. To our group were added: Margaret Byrd, Mike Prince, Donna Crisp, and Carl Barnett. Mary Evelyn Fulle returned after spending several years in Florida. Mrs. Nelle Dotson taught us health, and Mr. Sam Geek instructed us in North Carolina history. High School at last! And we became Freshmen! Mrs. Nelle Dotson began her task of teaching the girls home economics, and Mr. R. D. Bruce began agriculture with the boys. To acquaint us with high school English, Miss Josephine Curto was here to instruct us and tell us about verbs andsubject agreement. Many encouraging and uplifting hands had been with us during the CLASS OF 1958 past eight years. Now we needed the assisting hands of Mr. Harry Woodson who quickly became a favorite teacher. We had become adventurous and went to Biltmore Estate for a wonderful time. Our plans included a trip to Mount Mitchell, but the bus refused to go up the mountain. Not to be out done we returned to Ashevill e to enjoy an evening of skating and movies. After what seemed a long time to us,we became Sophomores. Again the guiding hands of Mr. Harry Woodson began to work for us. Through the efforts of Mrs. Julia Lappin we began to do better work in English and practice what we had been taught years before. We were still adventurous! So one nice, sunny day we went to Cherokee where we had a nice time wasting our money on curios, feeling that we had received a bargain. Only one mishap occured! In her haste to get on the bus, Margaret Byrd slipped and the result was a pair of torn slacks. A few safety pins did wonders, though. With the help and support of the never tiring hands of Miss Myrtle Sams, our Junior year was successful. As she helped us with the hard task of presenting our Junior Class play, Take Three Girls, we learned to co-operate and work toward one main objective. The next important event was the Junior-Senior Banquet. A lot of work and planning went into this banquet which we believe was a success. The theme of this banquet was Starlight and Roses, and it was held in the Rhododendron Room at Gaither's in Brevard. William Lynch, Dean of Students at Mars Hill College, was the guest speaker. Also a hit with us that year was a new member of our class, Richard Brown! Mrs. Lucy Sitton reached out to help and guide us in our Senior year. Many decisions had to be made and without her love and support all those decisions might not have come out so well. A Senior play, that required a lot of time and effort, as well asa lot of fun; the raising of funds for a class trip which seemed to us a tremendous task; the production of an annual--all these extras, and still we had schoolwork that had to be completed! Our teachers were patient and we always managed to do what had to be done. Miss Sams began the hard task of instructing us Senior English. Many of the girls again benefited by studying home economics under Mrs. Dotson, who wanted us to know how to live and get along with others. The boys had agriculture under Mr. Elbert Upton, who prepared them to be more useful citizens. Mr. Willard Roberts, Miss Bessie Jordan, and Mr. and Mrs. Sitton rounded out our high school faculty. Many hands have led us along the stepping stones toward our goal--graduation. We think the foundation of these stones has always been our parents. Their love, devotion, and belie f in us have made possible all the things we have had and enjoyed. We look back with gratitude to all who have taught us: To look up and not down, To look forward and not back To look out and not in--and To lend a hand. --Edward Everett Hale Working hard on our annual is Mrs. Sitton, our sponsor.
