SITTON, we, the Senior Class of 1957, wish to dedicate our yearbook, THE 1957 CHIEF..We hope, with our sincere and heart-felt gratitude, that for you this book will recall fond memories of us who now dedicate it to you as a means of expressing our deep love and appreciation for you. This we do because of what you have done for us in the past years and during the tedious days while we edited this book. We may not have been as obedient, as kind, or as thoughtful as we should have been; but now as we look back, we realize that, without your guidance, under- standing, and patient work, we would not have reached this era of life. So, again, we wish to express our most sincere thanks for what you have done. It has taken many daytime series to bring this drama to an end. As we look back through the years, these series have formed an interesting Twelve-Act Play. Remember how scared we were on that first day of school! We were very young actors then, but we realized that Mrs. Gladys Shuford was the star of the first grade. Our group consisted of: Norma Jean Dalton, Joan Norton, Bernice Dalton, Richard Ritter, Jim McCall, Mary Johnson, Patsy Bell, Eugenia Williams, David Kilpatrick, Jeanette Nesbitt, G. D. Allen, Jerri Hensley, Mary Jane Weese, Kenneth Nicholson, Margaret Carolyn Jones, Zane McEntire, Donald Crowder, Janice Greer, Lou Ellen Owens, Bobbie Cantrell, and others, who have left our group through the years Mrs. Loee Turner was with us to coach the Second Act of our Twelve-Year Play. At this time Dorothy Ann McCarson joined our cast. In the Third Act, our cast was divided with Mrs. Kate Dalton and Mrs. Anne Pressley sharing the honors respectively. The new protegee' of this year was Jean Cairnes. As the curtain rose on the Fourth Act, Mrs. Lucy Sitton and Mrs. Margaret Combs were on the scene to further our talents. With our knowledge and wisdaai facecesingds Mrs. Effie Kéller and Mrs. Claribel Clark aided us in our Fifth Act. Genevieve Norris and Ann Cox were the newest amateurs to join.us. rs. Blanche Hall and Mrs. Vera Morgan guided. us successfully through the Sixth Act. Mrs. Sitton, an old friend, greeted us in the Seventh Act. We met anew friend, Mrs. Vertie Perry, who gave us our first lesson in opera. Our big production of this year wasa Negro Minstrel. We also enjoyed physical education classes in our new gymnasium that year for the first time. A young star herself, Miss Margaret George, was with ‘us in the Eighth Act. The biggest highlight was our tour to Raleigh under the leadership of Mr. Sam Geek. The Ninth Act rolled around. Jerry Strickland, being our newest addition, naturally had stage fright. He was not by himself, however, as this was our first real performance. Mrs..Nelle Dotson and Mr. Robert Bruce were our sponsors. The picnic held at Camp Straus was anti-climaxed by Donald's accident. In the Tenth Act, Mrs. Sitton was again directing our great drama. Mary Jon Tilley, Gene Allison, and Phillip Connor came into the spoflight of this performance. We had field trips as a part of biology class, and in the spring we took a trip to Mt. Pisgah, running (truthfully) all the way to the top of the mountain. As the curtain rose on the Eleventh Act, we saw our beloved director, Mrs. Sitton, still guiding us. Although we gained no bright new stars, we lost some of our old-time favorites: Jerri Hensley, Bobby James Cantrell, and James Hipps. During the fall we successfully staged a three-act comedy, Maid of Money ; and we thought ourselves professionals--well, almost! Many of our class made the basketball and baseball teams for the first time this year. The picnic at Camp Straus featuring baseball, songs, games, and Lucyburgers, was lots of fun. During the spring months, our class was host to the Seniors ar 1956 at the Junior-Senior Banquet held at the Sky View Supper Club. Finally the CLIMAX of the play is here. Tommy Gordon and Earl Plemmons have joined us at the beginning of the Twelfth Act for our last performance. Mrs. Sitton, as always, is on hand to give us last-minute prompting and encouragement. Our yearbook preparation has been a main feature of the fall term and it gives a pictorial review of this last act. The winter has been taken over by active participation in basketball practice and games, in raising money for the class trip, selecting and producing our last big production--the Senior play, in attend- ance at the Junior-Senior Banquet. The Baccalureate Exercises on May 12 and Commencement on May 17, the most serious part of our school career, has brought tears to our eyes. The class trip to Washington served as the most joyous occasion of the Twelfth Act. The play is over and the curtain falls. Now we are stars and ready to enter the great drama of Life. Co-Historians--Mary Jon Tilley Norma Jean Dalton als iS) Wolle Lire WORKING TOGETHER The members of the- Senior Class have enjoyed serving the school in the ways we could. Doing work for the school has given each of us experience, that will help us in the future.
