= SSS SS THE CHIEF PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS TO OUR PARENTS We, the Seniors of 1954, wish to express our sincere appreciation to you--our parents--for your untiring efforts and faithful understanding,as we trudged along the path of learning, by dedicating to you this--THE 1954 CHIEF. You have sent us to school many times when we would not have gone of our own accord. When we were discouraged, you gave us encouragement. Now we have reached the goal for which all of us were striving. We thank you from the depth of our hearts for all you have done, and will endeavor to show our appreciation in ie years to come by being the kind of young men and women which you expect us to be. THE CHIEF, the staff has attempted to portra become even more priceless to us through the year: pages of this volume of THE CHIEF, we can portray too for ourselves some of the cherished memories. Briefly and tenderly, we think of that bright August morning twelve years ago when we first began our climb. Of that thirty-seven shy, but eager, six-year olds who began, only sixteen of us, Frank Case, Woodrow Gibbs, T. C. Williams, Ada Norris, Roy Brogden, Lavada Norris, Harold Scott, Jackie Hawkins, Betty McCall, Frances Hendricks, Dolly McKinna, Jimmy Allen, Mae Garren, Katherine Dalton, Virginia Orr and Elaine Adcock, are completing the climb together. Silently we pay grateful tribute to all those teachers and friends who have rejoiced with us in our triumphs and who have comforted us in our heartaches on this upward climb. Miss Blythe set our feet in the right direction up the steps, left the task to Mrs. Turner, one we hold dear, who in turn sent us on to Mrs. Hensley, Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Keller, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Steppe and Miss Bessie. On the fourth step of our climb, William Saunders and Mary Johnson joined our group. Upward eight steps we climbed, sometimes sorrowful, as many of our group fell behind or left us for other horizons. With our farewell to Miss Beésie, we, proud, but fearfully, faced the landing of education, at last we had reached a cherished time, high school. Mr. Bruce led us upward over this ninth step without mishap. Our own Mr. Peek undertook the task in our next two years. With him, we worked, played and laughed to- gether, facing and conquering all our fears. During these two years, we lost many of Our number, some married and left us, others answered the call to service, while others chose other schools. Edna White, Sydney White and Margaret Rogers joined us during our eleventh year together. Highlighting this year were parties, triumphs in the Fall Festival and the Junior and Senior Banquet. We even enjoyed our sneak day which was at Camp Harry Straus; upon our return we marveled at the small punishment we re- ceived. Betty Jo Byrd joined us at the begin ning of our last step in the climb. Now that we are on the last step, some of us regret it; we look back on our many and happy memories. imusmuastestep is hard to, go over, but with the help of Miss Gurto, a won- derful and loving person, we believe we shall make it. Some of us will be going on to college, some getting married, but wherever we are,we will be thinking of the happy days at Etowah School.
