ee ee Dedication With love and deep appreciation, yet with a feeling of unworthiness, we--The Senior Class of Etowah High School,—dedicate this,--''The 1953 Chief}' to our dear friend and adviser, MRS. NELLE DOTSON, who has stood by us with willing loyalty and deep devotion as we journeyed through high school. Miss Blythe took the lead as guide and marching valiantly behind her were;Perry Morgan, Maudine Orr, Griffin Kilpat- rick, John Love, Virgle McClure, Neil Greer, Danny Johnson, Joe Hensley and a number of others, who were destined to fall along the way side. Although the going was rugged and the snow storms numerous, August, 1941, found Mrs. Tur- ner as guide for this little band, who had lost one member in a snow storm. The trail wound upward and more dangerous as in turn, Miss Randloph, Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Stepp, and Mrs. Morgan took the lead. Tears were shed for those who tum- bled into crevices, over cliffs, froze in snow storms; but the group lingered only long enough to pick up new members. Roger Whitesides hitched himself to the towing rope during the third lap of the journey and Margaret Ann Gossett joined the pilgrims while they were resting on the fourth lap of the climb, and they stopped to let Bobby McCombs, Earl Sumner, and Mary Louise Hendricks join them on the eighth turn. While shouting and rejoicing as the group, joined by Erline McCarson, entered upon the ninth lap of the journey, they saw at last their long sought goal in sight. As the weary, yet jubliant, pilgrims stood gazing upward through the snow and mist, striving to see the top, Mr. Peek tightened the climbing ropes, helped repack knapsacks, and gave first-aid to those who were beginning to weaken. Mrs. Dotson relieved Mr. Peek of this job as she chose to finish the long dangerous climb with the little group. Upward and over the tenth ridge, they climbed without disaster, but alas, during the eleventh lap of the climb, though Mrs. Dotson struggled fran- tically, three girls fell into the Pigeon River and were carried with the swirling tide into the sea of matrimony. It was during this phase of the struggle upward that they took out time to present a three-act play under the supervision of Miss Curto and to entertain their elders (the 1952 seniors) with an elaborate feast and frolic on the ''Merry-go-round of Life. Even as the group, in triumph, climbed the last lap of the long journey, evad- ing crevices and gorges, another member of the class, Hilda Parris, was swept down from the mountain into the sea of matrimony, At last, the smoke has cleared from the mountain, our long hike is finished, our days of sorrow and woe are over, our guides are now leaving us on our own as we face the tomorrow. In our hands, we hold the passports to our future, in our minds, we hold pictured of what is be- fore us, but in our hearts we hold dear memories of cherished friends and teachers who helped us, memories of joys, triumphs, and sorrow shared, and memories of twelve years of life, that is now past, seemed so short, As we stand, fourteen triumphant in our climb, we are a bit afraid of what lies on the path down on the other side, but with faith in God in mankind, we are ready to start our trip down, THE 1953 SENIORS Indisputable Facts ETOWAH BRICK Build better homes-Upkeep is less Beauty is lasting-Home is more enduring Hendersonville North Carolina =) ih vy Satis coe % . ie ee es HAUunTAAL TIE geeagiar tse sscceeese eS =] seine te en et es: EEG: ee : EROS = pr rer: as
