PROS SENIOR CLASS Crass Cotors—Blue and white Crass FLowER—Red rose Morro—Not at the top but climbing Class History As we, the class of 1948, draw near our goal, graduation, we begin to look back on days gone by. We look back and remember our first year at Etowah High School. We were a class of 35 students who entered high school in the fall of 1944. We were greeted by our principal, Mr. H. T. Sitton, and our homeroom teacher, Mr. W. A. Nesbitt. Our other teachers were Mrs. Grace Smith, Mrs. Sue Corpening, and Mrs. Katherine Medford. Our class officers for the year were Wilma Hollingsworth, president; Edward Moody, vice-president; and Betty Jean Baynard, secretary-treasurer. We spent most of the year getting accustomed to high school life. As we came to our sophomore year the class enrollment dropped to 31. Mr. Nesbitt was again our homeroom teacher and our other teachers were the same except for Mrs. Smith who was no longer with us. Mrs. Katherine Lowndes joined the faculty that year. Wilma Hollingsworth was again elected class president; Bob Greer was vice-president; and Grace Gossett was secretary-treasurer. We began to take more active interest in extra curricular activities in our sophomore year. The boys joined in softball and basketball practice. The girls too played basketball and joined a number of the clubs. We were really a part of the high school that year. In the fall of 1946, 24 juniors were listed on the class roll. Mrs. Lowndes and Mr. Nesbitt resigned from the faculty and three new teachers came to be with us. They were Mr. Clyde Peek, Mr. R. D. Bruce, and Mrs. Lucy Sitton. We had a com- mercial department for the first time that year and “The Little Chief” our school paper was started and published monthly. A number of our class were members of “The Little Chief” staff. We also sponsored a banquet in Hendersonville for the seniors in the spring of 1947. We had a very busy and delightful year. Our class officers were Betty Jean Baynard, president; Bob Greer, vice-president; Jean McCall, secretary, and Grace Gossett, treasurer. Now we come to our last year at Etowah High School and there are only 17 members of our class left. Mr. Peek and Mrs. Sitton are no longer with us but we have two new teachers, Miss Bessie Jordan and Mr. Robert E. Carter. Our class ofhicers are Carl Killian, Jr., president; Grace Gossett, vice-president; Jean McCall, secretary; and Bob Greer, treasurer. We have been busy this year, and we feel we have something to be proud of because we are the largest class to graduate from Etowah High School since the twelfth grade has been added to the public school system of North Carolina. We are also proud that we can again have “The Chief” for a keepsake, as well as a cherished possession, to serve as a record of our achieve- ment and our many friendships made here at school. We are now looking forward to our Sneak Day, to the try-outs for the Senior play, and to the banquet we hear rumored the Juniors are giving for us. As graduation approaches and we prepare to bid goodbye to the oncoming classes, we leave the wish that each may find the happiness, success, and pleasures that we have found here at Etowah High School. —Wirima Ho.iiincswortH
