We look back and remember our first year at Etowah High School. We were a class of 35 students who entered high school in the fall of 1944. We were greeted by our principal, Mr. H. T. Sitton, and our homeroom teacher, Mr. W. A. Nesbitt. Our other teachers were Mrs. Grace Smith, Mrs. Sue Corpening, and Mrs. Katherine Medford. Our class officers for the year were Wilma Hollingsworth, president; Edward Moody, vice-president; and Betty Jean Baynard, secretary-treasurer. We spent most of the year getting accustomed to high school life. As we came to our sophomore year the class enrollment dropped to 31. Mr. Nesbitt was again our homeroom teacher and our other teachers were the same except for Mrs. Smith who was no longer with us. Mrs. Katherine Lowndes joined the faculty that year. Wilma Hollingsworth was again elected class president; Bob Greer was vice-president; and Grace Gossett was secretary-treasurer. We began to take more active interest in extra curricular activities in our sophomore year. The boys joined in softball and basketball practice. The girls too played basketball and joined a number of the clubs. We were really a part of the high school that year. In the fall of 1946, 24 juniors were listed on the class roll. Mrs. Lowndes and Mr. Nesbitt resigned from the faculty and three new teachers came to be with us. They were Mr. Clyde Peek, Mr. R. D. Bruce, and Mrs. Lucy Sitton. We had a com- mercial department for the first time that year and “The Little Chief” our school paper was started and published monthly. A number of our class were members of “The Little Chief” staff. We also sponsored a banquet in Hendersonville for the seniors in the spring of 1947. We had a very busy and delightful year. Our class officers were Betty Jean Baynard, president; Bob Greer, vice-president; Jean McCall, secretary, and Grace Gossett, treasurer. Now we come to our last year at Etowah High School and there are only 17 members of our class left. Mr. Peek and Mrs. Sitton are no longer with us but we have two new teachers, Miss Bessie Jordan and Mr. Robert E. Carter. Our class ofhicers are Carl Killian, Jr., president; Grace Gossett, vice-president; Jean McCall, secretary; and Bob Greer, treasurer. We have been busy this year, and we feel we have something to be proud of because we are the largest class to graduate from Etowah High School since the twelfth grade has been added to the public school system of North Carolina. We are also proud that we can again have “The Chief” for a keepsake, as well as a cherished possession, to serve as a record of our achieve- ment and our many friendships made here at school. We are now looking forward to our Sneak Day, to the try-outs for the Senior play, and to the banquet we hear rumored the Juniors are giving for us. As graduation approaches and we prepare to bid goodbye to the oncoming classes, we leave the wish that each may find the happiness, success, and pleasures that we have found here at Etowah High School. —Wirima Ho.iiincswortH jemi elas Chokers Cart KILzian, Jr. Grace GossETT Jean McCati Bos GREER President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Sm (alae Left to right, first row: Albert Bell, Mitchell Brogden, Garland Garren, Carl Killian, Jr., Bob Greer, Edward Robinson. Written by Grace Gossett AND Lots GILBERT Witnessed by Mrs. Meprorp CibAS o) PU fale te W The class elected me class prophet so I shall try to do my best to foresee the future of my classmates. I have taken a sample of the handwriting of each of the seniors and I have analyzed it. With this analysis and with the aid of my crystal ball I prophesy the following future events: Wilma Hollingsworth’s handwriting shows that she is the career type. She will become an interior decorator and she will make such a success of remodeling her home in Tuxedo that she will become famous. Lois Gilbert is very quiet and peaceful and mixes well with people. She will become personnel director for women at the Ecusta Paper Corporation. Mitchell Brogden is very secretive and does not disclose his business readily. He will become a special investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washing- ton, D. C. Charlesteen Scott’s handwriting shows she is a fiend for neatness. She will be- come head nurse at Spartanburg General Hospital in Spartanburg, S. C. Flossie Stepp is the athletic girl of our class. She will become very successful as a basketball coach for the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. Albert Bell is the executive type. He will be Secretary of the Navy in 1960. Myrtle Robertson’s handwriting shows her to be very dependable and patient. She will own and operate a kindergarten in Columbia, S. C. Ella Mae Galloway’s handwriting shows her to be very original. She will be- come a famous dress designer in New York City. Grace Gossett is the career type and with her ability to make friends, she will become a very successful model. Bob Greer has a vigorous, forceful writing which shows him to be very self-con- fident. He will organize and become owner of the Greer Contracting Company. Jean McCall likes secretarial work. She will find employment as a secretary with the Civil Service Department in Washington, D. C. Jack Justus likes to work with machinery. He will become manager of the Blythe Brothers’ Construction Company. Evelyn Patterson’s handwriting shows she has talent for advertising. She will become director of the advertising department for “The Good Housekeeping Maga- G ” zine. Garland Garren, who is interested in newspaper work, will become a foreign correspondent for a leading newspaper. Carl Killian, Jr., likes to work math. He will become a math teacher in a high school in New Jersey. Edward Robinson’s ambition is to become an undertaker. He will find success in his work and will become owner of a funeral home in Greenville, S.
