CLASS HISTORY By DRAMA BOYD, Historian INTRODUCTION Along the road of life marches youth, sometimes downward, sometimes up- ward. It is a long, hard climb, but if we keep up our abmitions in life as we have for these last four years of high school, we will find success. Rather than describe these activities in detail, let us take advantage of this opportunity to look over the many events that have taken place during the last four history- making years at Etowah High School. CHAPTER ONE When we started down the rough, muddy road of high school in the fall of 1934, there were thirty-two in our class. As we struggled along that year, trying to reach the goal, which we are now about to achieve, we found two members wishing to join us. These were Elmer and Hoyle Green. We found also Ida Parker and Mary Orr leaving us. CHAPTER TWO In our second year of high school we gained four members, namely, Catherine Henson, James Kimsey, Charlotte Blythe, and Columbus Allen. But this addition was too good to last, and when the eight months term came to a close we had to lose, for various reasons, Janie Lou Dalton, Catherine Williams, Claude Corn, Harvey Bell, Carmel Parker, Doniva Dalton, James Kimsey, Louise Galloway, Catherine Henson, Clarence Hamilton, Harold Orr, Louise Blackwell, Pauline Dunigan, and Hoyle Green. CHAPTER THREE In the fall of 1936 we found ourselves called “Jolly Juniors”. This was a smooth-sailing and uneventful year, but when the closing exercises left us with thoughts of dignified Seniors, we found another loss of four pupils, L. C. Hamilton, Elmer Green, Charlotte Blythe, and Cecil Duncan. - CHAPTER FOUR Last fall we started our Senior year with three members waiting to join us. These were Ellen Davis, Margaret Ford, and Louise Galloway. And when the rolls were called in our various classes the following answered “present”: Virginia Allison, Grace Brown, Wilma Blythe, Helen Bell, Drama Boyd, Mamie Clayton, Ellen Davis, Edna Duncan, Kathleen Duncan, Margaret Ford, Louise Galloway, Rena Sue Hamilton, Neta Ledbetter, Nelia Ledbetter, Margaret Mor- gan, Frances Surrette, Columbus Allen, Walter Davis, Harold Houk, Ulysess Summey, and J. V. VonCannon, Jr. In this group we were strong with the strength of invulnerable innocence. Within the curves of our fumbling inex- perienced hands lay our future destiny, but with patient determination and the tendency to “hang on’, despite the odds, won us many honors. CONCLUSION The horizon looms large and empty before us. We know not what lies before our limited vision—but we are not afraid. We ask much of life, but we hesitate to pay the price—that of extensive and concentrated learning. Most of us have our particular field of work chosen, and we are educating ourselves along that line. Up to a certain point, we are guided and our small individual burdens are willingly shouldered by others, but after that we must work alone. Let us try to go by our motto, “NEVER TURN BACK”, and strive for many and varied weapons of skill to help us later in life against the battles of discouragement and unemployment when we no longer have the help of our parents and teachers to shield us. CLASS PROPHECY By VIRGINIA ALLISON, Prophet (World-wide News Commentator of the Etowah Yatching Club, Washington, D. C.) FLASH!...Dr. J. V. VonCannon, Jr., lecturer, and author of an outstanding book on philosophy, has just returned from London where he attended a great reception held in his honor. Another reception and banquet awaited him in New York. At this banquet it was revealed that Dr. VonCannon was a graduate of Etowah High School. FLASH!...A great disturbance was caused in the Senate yesterday when Miss Margaret Morgan, Senator from North Carolina, introduced a bill to tax all bachelors to support a beauty parlor for all old maids past the age of forty. Senator Morgan has the honor of being the first lady Senator from’ North Carolina. Hon. Walter R. Davis, the silver-tongued orator of the Senate, offered a Rejec ted Bachelor’s Club Amendment, which was immediately passed. FLASH!...Miss Mamie Clayton has adopted ‘‘Neta Uneeda’’ as her Hollywood movie name. She is soon to be starred in “The Follies of 1950’’. FLASH!...Miss Rena Sue Hamilton, lion-tamrer for the Ringling Brother and Barnum and Bailey combined shows, had a’ narrow escape yesterday as the world’s largest circus started its engagement at the Madison Square Gardens in New York. She was rushed to the hospital just in time for Dr. Jake Houk to save her arm from having to be amputated. FLASH!...Lady Edna Duncan and Prince Von Tucker, of the Royal House of Afghavis- tan, will be married today in the Little Church Around the Corner off Broadway. They will sail for Austria to spend their honeymoon with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. FLASH!...Dr. Harold Houk now is a famous surgeon at Walter Reid Hospital, Washing- ton, D. C. His wife, the former Miss Drama Boyd of Etowah High School, is one of America’s foremost society editors. FLASH!...Miss Francis Surrette, local hostess on 101 Dude Ranch, Dallas, Texas, was a graduate of Etowah High School. Miss Surrette is now entertaining the movie colony, which is making a new picture starring Kathleen Duncan in ‘Francis Shot a Giant from Mars’. FLASH!...Helen Bell was announced the winner of the annual swimming contest at Los Angeles, California. A silver cup was awarded her. FLASH!...Mrs. Neta Ledbetter Jancosky and Mrs. Nelia Ledbetter Bloomburger have bought and are operating an establishment for “‘Fashion Designing” in the eity of New York. FLASH!.. Mr. Columbus Allen is now considered the outstanding umpire in the National League. é FLASH!...Dr. Wilma Blythe, specialist for infantile paralysis, is now leaving Portland, Oregon, for the Johns Hopkins University, where she will become a member of the faculty. FLASH!...Miss Louise Galloway and Miss Margaret Ford, former students of Etowah High School, have obtained the right to manufacture and sell the Galloway and Ford Diati- tion Pills. FLASH!...Commodore Ulysses Summey is near Honkong, China. He is the head of the Asiatie fleet, FLASH!... Miss Ellen Davis, famous noted lecturer, will lecture in Hendersonville next week. After this she plans to aid in dramatizing one of Shakespeare’s finest plays, ‘As. Bote like, Lt: 72 FLASH!...Mrs. Grace Brown Wintergreen is now head of the English Department of W. C. T. C., Cullowhee, North Carolina. She and her granddaughter, Teeny Weeny Upright, will spend the summer in Europe. Page Thirteen
