Wright DEDICATION With sincere admiration we dedicate this book to James Wilson Morgan, whose achievements in the field of education place him eminently among the few who have contributed greatly to the enrich- ment and progress of Education in Henderson County. Being one of the first teachers in Henderson County, he has stirred our students in their thinking to a deeper appreciation of the things about them, and has been one of the most compelling inspirations of our high school days. For this admirable love of knowledge, we take genuine pleasure in presenting this volume as a token of our esteem. Page Three QNIGIUINA TOOHOS FAHL Page Four R. G. ANDERS R. W. And those who are brave will go forward To fight lfe’s battles, and attain, They ’ll strive and never turn backward Till the coveted prize they gain. We will have real lessons to master, And oft’ there’ll be failures to meet, But those who have courage will flinch not— Tis the coward who whimpers, “I’m beat”. So now at the hour of departing, At this, another commencement day, Grieve not that our school days are over, Or for chances we let slp away. For those opportunities are vanished, Life will bring chances anew; Turn then from our mistakes, dear classmates, Kach new day brings a new work to do. Then au revoir, teachers and classmates; Bid us God speed on our way. . We’ll push on and never turn backward, We'll be found in the thick of the fray. Page Eleven CLASS HISTORY By DRAMA BOYD, Historian INTRODUCTION Along the road of life marches youth, sometimes downward, sometimes up- ward. It is a long, hard climb, but if we keep up our abmitions in life as we have for these last four years of high school, we will find success. Rather than describe these activities in detail, let us take advantage of this opportunity to look over the many events that have taken place during the last four history- making years at Etowah High School. CHAPTER ONE When we started down the rough, muddy road of high school in the fall of 1934, there were thirty-two in our class. As we struggled along that year, trying to reach the goal, which we are now about to achieve, we found two members wishing to join us. These were Elmer and Hoyle Green. We found also Ida Parker and Mary Orr leaving us. CHAPTER TWO In our second year of high school we gained four members, namely, Catherine Henson, James Kimsey, Charlotte Blythe, and Columbus Allen. But this addition was too good to last, and when the eight months term came to a close we had to lose, for various reasons, Janie Lou Dalton, Catherine Williams, Claude Corn, Harvey Bell, Carmel Parker, Doniva Dalton, James Kimsey, Louise Galloway, Catherine Henson, Clarence Hamilton, Harold Orr, Louise Blackwell, Pauline Dunigan, and Hoyle Green. CHAPTER THREE In the fall of 1936 we found ourselves called “Jolly Juniors”. This was a smooth-sailing and uneventful year, but when the closing exercises left us with thoughts of dignified Seniors, we found another loss of four pupils, L. C. Hamilton, Elmer Green, Charlotte Blythe, and Cecil Duncan. - CHAPTER FOUR Last fall we started our Senior year with three members waiting to join us. These were Ellen Davis, Margaret Ford, and Louise Galloway. And when the rolls were called in our various classes the following answered “present”: Virginia Allison, Grace Brown, Wilma Blythe, Helen Bell, Drama Boyd, Mamie Clayton, Ellen Davis, Edna Duncan, Kathleen Duncan, Margaret Ford, Louise Galloway, Rena Sue Hamilton, Neta Ledbetter, Nelia Ledbetter, Margaret Mor- gan, Frances Surrette, Columbus Allen, Walter Davis, Harold Houk, Ulysess Summey, and J. V. VonCannon, Jr. In this group we were strong with the strength of invulnerable innocence. Within the curves of our fumbling inex- perienced hands lay our future destiny, but with patient determination and the tendency to “hang on’, despite the odds, won us many honors. CONCLUSION The horizon looms large and empty before us. We know not what lies before our limited vision—but we are not afraid. We ask much of life, but we hesitate to pay the price—that of extensive and concentrated learning. Most of us have our particular field of work chosen, and we are educating ourselves along that line. Up to a certain point, we are guided and our small individual burdens are willingly shouldered by others, but after that we must work alone. Let us try to go by our motto, “NEVER TURN BACK”, and strive for many and varied weapons of skill to help us later in life against the battles of discouragement and unemployment when we no longer have the help of our parents and teachers to shield us. So for the class of ’38, I bid you FAREWELL! Page Twelve CLASS PROPHECY By VIRGINIA ALLISON, Prophet (World-wide News Commentator of the Etowah Yatching Club, Washington, D. C.) FLASH!...Dr. J. V. Omi e%@ - e An Appreciation The students and teachers of Etowah High School wish to express their sincere appreciation to the merchants and profes- sional men who, through their advertisemnts, to a large degree have made possible the publication of this annual. The pupils of Etowah High School feel justly proud of this, their first effort in the preservation of school-day memories and incidents on the printed page, and to many this issue of THE CHIEF will be a treasure cherished throughout hfe. Like any magazine or booklet, the publication of THE CHIEF would have been financially impossible without the cooperation of the advertisers whose messages appear herein; and it is with the hope that by means of our patronage and the good-will of the people of the Etowah School community that we, the students of Etowah, may some day repay the kindness which the adver- tisers have shown us. 1D DD) ()P- () DD) D ) AD) A () A) (AD) (TOA) AD) ERE () a SS SC) RR (ER () EER ( ) ) ( GEAND- () -aaD ( ) SRD ¢ ) EEN ¢ ) ERE ( ) RD ( ERD ( ) RERAND{ ) CRNA ( ) D ( ) REED ) ) () () C- DX) A { ) BR ( ) C ( ) CEREED ( ) RRR C) RSERRED ( ) SRRERED- ( ) -CRRERED { ) REEEED- ( ) -GRERESD ( ) GEREIID ( ) QGRRD ( )-CHEREED () GEEEED-( P(A) () SD () ED) AD () RA () D-CA) ETD) OND (2 OUED- () ED { 05 2 + SRER ()} RERD () A () REND ( ) RERED () RED ( ) ERED- ( ) ERR ¢ ) REN { ARE { ) RRRED ( ) ERED ( PRED { ) GREREERD- ( ) GERERED ( ) RRR ( ) RRDREED ( GRRE { ) EED ( ) DD ( ) EE- C) GEREED ( ) GRE-( ) () () ( -- sé G o.4 BROWN INSURANCE AGENCY 120 FIFTH AVENUE WEST Life Insurance PHONE 729 Disability Insurance HENDERSONVILLE, N.
