Wfhat would Piper', do without Mr. Stephens, our English teacher? A test tube and a microscope are tools of instruction for Mr. Sawyer. The student's knowledge of law and economics comes from Mr. Marsico, the spon- sor of the Rifle Club. Nlastery of mathematics plus pep talks equals Mr. Spangler. The health of our student body is protected by our own Miss Griffin. The students of Miss Kotchey,s classes will be capable and efficient in the business world. Directing the Junior play and sponsoring the French Club keeps Miss Pfaub busy after classes. De- veloping better citizens through the study of American history is the aim of Miss Dietrich. What is the motto of Mrs. Smith,s classes? All of us know it is speed and accuracy in the business world! jnfo me MW, spam .six Second row. l. to r.7Philip IN1. Glasser, Keith V. Mr. Miller's baton has led the band and orchestra through another successful year. Mr. Lee, who teaches civics, enjoys the out-of-doors with the Anglers Club. Biology and general science are made interesting by Mr. Bostic. Miss Gibson is our friendly and helpful guide in the world of books. Our physical education teacher, Mrs. Patterson, develops habits of health and sportsmanship in the girls of E.H.S. Preparing future homemalcers is the goal of Miss Balzer. All of us are well acquainted with our pleasant and efficient secretaries Miss Bartsch and Miss Drinski. All of the boys enjoy Coach Clarence Metzger's physical education program. af.L 8'4 '7!ae Wafwwafuf There are many doors in f:tna High School and all of them are open to anyone who wishes to enjoy a learning experience Happy 15 the student who avails himself of the opportunities which they afford d b h rlds of the Some of these doors attract those who are fascinate y t e wo microscope or test tube while others entice those students who enjoy the challenge ofthe business machine or the ledger The forge and the drafting hoard the basket ball COLlI't and the rifle range appeal IO the IHCCTCSI of many as OICl'1C1'S knock OD the doors marked music and drama or art and crafts The mathematical formula the muse of poetry nd prose and the annals ot man are not without their patrons as students seek their portals to pay them homage and tribute minds and creative fingers to enjoy fruitful experiences that develop and enrich the lives of youth X A4 404 Whack We Zffelcame ip. The first half was decidedly defen- sive. as both forward walls fought for every inch of ground. Hampton domi- nated the play in the third quarter as they drove over a touchdown score. Latcr Hampton climaxed an eighty yard drive to score again. The fourth quarter remained defensive until Etna advanced to the Hampton fifteen yard line. Etna suffered a heartbreaking defeat from the Braves from West Deer. The West Deer eleven. sparked by their run- ning and passing, advanced to the two yard line and crashed over for the score. The hard running of Karras in the closing minutes of the game proved useless as time ran out and the game ended, 6-0. In the final home game of the season, the Rams thoroughly trounced Trafford 19-0. Runs by Karras, Cavlovic, and Lyons made possible an early Blue and White touchdown. With a similar burst of en- thusiasm this same trio scored again with Lyons running over from the nineteen. Sweeping runs by Karras and Cavlovic placed the ball on the twog Karras then plunged over for another. It was Etna's night. The Etna Rams journeyed to Nloon Township where they enjoyed a victory, 13-0. The first half was a defensive battleg however, early in the third quarter Pat Rodgers scampered eighty-eight yards for a score behind perfect Ram blocking. Mid- way in the quarter Rodgers again dupli- cated this feat by racing forty-six yards. The remaining portion of the game saw both teams waging tight defensive plays. The final engagement of the Etna eleven proved disastrous to the Rams as the Cavaliers defeated them 25-0 on the Aspinwall field. The Cavaliers capital- ized on faulty defensive plays by the Rams. Larrimer sparked the Cavaliers to victory with his powerful running throughout the game. Karras, Haser, and Rodgers tried to start an offensive drive for the Blue and White, but their at- tempts proved unsuccessful. During this season the Etna squad achieved a record of four victories and five losses. Throughout every game the Rams demonstrated their true Etna spirit by providing a challenging offensive to all of their opponents. Well staffed by an active group of Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores our paper wrote an- other page in Blue and White journalism. The artists, Sally Domanski, Dorothy Keck and Warren Hoburg created many attractive covers for the issue of this year. Stories interestingly written were contributed by the Feature Editor. David Karcher and his assistants Jere Gillespie. Ronald Lyons, Marilyn Raunswinder and Eleanor Benvin. Without the speedy and accur- ate typing of Joan Zuratovic, the staff could never have met the deadline for coming out on time. Smoke's purchase of a new miineograph made it necessary for the staff to engage in money-making projects in order to finance this new addition to the press room. The sale of candy and door hangers and the proceeds of Pallen Caravan helped to solve some of their financial problems. The University of Pittsburgh honored Smoke by awarding it a Certificate of First Honor among High School publications. Since this club is a service organization they build and repair school equipment throughout the year. They are kept especially busy during the fall and winter months constructing sets for the Junior and Senior Plays. The members of the club enjoyed several in- teresting field trips to the Buhl Planetarium and the University of Pittsburgh where they en- joyed enlightening demonstrations and lectures on the principles of sound, radio, and gravity. David Karcher and Ralph Doerzbacher, two very active members, traveled to Oalcmont and presented an interesting demonstration of the Testla Coil to the students of science in Oalc- inont High School. Throughout the year these two cub scientists were assisted by their fellow members, Terry Fischer, Williain Fischer and Norman Jedliclca in many projects, they were lcept busy cleaning and repairing much of the apparatus of the physics department. One of the members suc- tif ceeded in putting the large vacuum pump into efficient operation. During the spring months, this active group adopted as a special club pro- ject, the construction of a static electric gen- erator, which they contributed to the school laboratory. Since the Science Club was interested in rec- ognizing and encouraging talent in its particular field, the members insisted that candidates for the organization must display a creative talent by worlc in scientific experimentation or con- struction. At the close of the year, at a Science Fair, the members proudly displayed to the student body, many of their projects and cre- ations in the field of physics. Twenty-six members were enrolled in this course the first semester and an equal number the second sem- ester. Two periods a week was the average time spent in learning to drive under the supervision of Mr. Arnold, who possesses all the patience that one person could possibly have. Since a state-wide experiment was being con- ducted this year, the pupils taking Drivers Training Courses applied for their permits through their instructor. In this way the State could tell which group was involved in more accidentsg those who learn to drive in class or those who learn by some other method of in- struction. As the students progressed there were certain tests that Mr. Arnold gave at various intervals to driving pupils. However, it was obvious that those who qualified for the rifle team were worthy of their position as they made a fine showing against their strongest rivals. Under the direction of Mr. George Marsico, the Etna rifle team competed with rifle clubs of neighboring schools. When shooting records were finally tallied the honor of representing Etna was shared by three seniors. three juniors, one sophomore and five freshmen.
