Board administrcit . W. C. HILBURN Superintendent of Schools 6 ors, and faculty Students, you are traveling a one-vvay street. As you progress through school, this street broadens, becomes less sheltered and provides for clearer vision. May your re- flections on the passing miles include only the beautiful landscapes, scenes, and experi- ences, but none of your drudgeries, disap- pointments, grudges, bumps and iolts. As you emerge upon life's super turnpike, en- gage your electronic guide in order that the maze of roadside attractions, cloverleat turns, over and under passes may not swerve you from your ultimate high objective. -W. C. Hilburn K A 5 Q 4 J, 4 'J '-,,, --L. Q, lm, WALTER B, HAMMER Principal and Dean H. x x. In i95i a student of Estherville High School penned these lines: A river is a funny thing Skipping by like a bird on wing, Gliding, gliding, past you and me, Gliding, gliding, down to the sea. Life's moments slip past as noiselessly as this river described by Bill Kerr. The only ties to These mo- ments are memories. People do not associate past events with dates on a calendar. The event is bound up with something that happened. Students in Estherville's high school and iunior college will associate their teen-age days with many school affairs. One memory will be, VVhen we moved into the new senior high school and college building. . . , to be followed with tales of confusion, new rooms, a cafeteria, muddy parking lot, no walks, and then how things settled into a semblance of order. Other memories will recall classmates, teachers, triumphs, failures, dreams and disappointments. Through it all will come the realization that students were not merely preparing for Life, this was Life. -Walter B. They practice twice a week to prepare for four main annual events: the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, the Music Festival, and the Senior programs. Baccalaureate and Commencement The Christmas Concert features a religious stage setting. It is opened each year by a candlelight pro- cessional. Religious music sung by the chorus and small groups is heard by the KLIL radio audience as well as the audience present. The Spring Concert plays an important role in welcoming spring. Music for this concert and for the Music Festival is rehearsed during the second semes- ter. Each year the music department invites a well- known director to lead them on the night of the Festival. To bring an end to another year of fine music, the Mixed Chorus makes its last appearance at the Senior Baccalaureate and Commencement programs. .Qi V 1- VS' ?f f4 3 '2.aa3iii?Sf1. Juniors present famous comedy On November 23 the Junior Class presented the three-act comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, at Roosevelt Auditorium. A capacity crowd enioyed the famous comedy which has been called the greatest farce in the English language. The author, Oscar Wilde, wrote the play to be- little the prudish conventional opinions of the upper class Britisher of the Victorian era. The humor of the play lies in its lines. The cast ably presented these lines, using the inflection and accent of the players of the English theatre in the early l900's. The stage setting and the costumes of the cast also carried the audience back to the turn of the century. The story of the play is centered around London, England. Mr. John Worthing has invented an imaginary brother Earnest so that he can visit in London when he tires of his duties at his country estate. Among these duties is guardianship of a lovely eighteen-year-old ward, Cecily Cardew. Sight unseen, Cecily falls in love with the imaginary brother simply because his name is Earnest, In London Mr. Worthing becomes engaged to Gwendoline Fairfax. She says she loves him because his name is Earnest. Mr. Worthing has been posing in London as his imaginary brother Earnest and realizes that Gwendoline does not know that his real name is John. Confusion results when Algernon fvioncrieft, Gwen- doline's cousin, goes to Mr. Worthing's country estate and poses as the imaginary brother Earnest. He be- comes engaged to Cecily. More confusion results when Gwendolyn also visits the country estate and informs Cecily that she is engaged to Earnest. As in all good comedies a happy ending results. The cast for the play included Bob Simpson who portrayed John Worthing, Bob Lee as Algernon Mon- crieft, Diane Huntsinger as Gwendoline Fairfax, and Colleen Hunt as Cecily Cardew, Barbara Huntsinger as Gwendoline's mother, Lady Bracknell, Dana Coftie as Cecily's governess, Miss Prism, Jack Lyman as Rev. Canon Chasuble, John Tibbetts as a servant, Merriman, and Ronald Crees as a servant, Lane. Stage crews were Roger Rusch, Harold Carrison, Bob Derrickson, Dick Rick, Jack Barlow and Anthony Anderson. Others who helped with sets were Chuck Reiter, Ann Ridley, and Kay Shonkwiler. Mr. Gail Niceswanger directed the play. This year's team had some very strong competition. Even when iniuries and sickness seemed to plague them, they fought hard. The backing this year was very poor. Next year, it is hoped that the team will have backing whether they win or lose. The score at the end of the game isn't as important as the way the game is played.
