In compiling this volume, the first since 19-12, the members of the annual staff have attempted to picture the high lights onlyg the students hope that these will be reminiscent of the days spent in the halls and classrooms of Estherville High School. I E l .,.-..,.. ' 1 - if Ti - ' if ' ' 'WW 4 . ADMINISTRATIQN N. E. Demoney Superintendent liven hetiore Pearl Harbor the Estherville school system began to gear itself to a war economy. lf one should refer to Estherville educational hulletins issued before we became enmeshed in tl1e most terrihle ot' all world wars, he would find the following pro- grams among many others adopted and put into action: expansion ot Olll' intlustrial arts department into .1 general shop program. addition of .1 1'oc.1tionaI agritulture department. provision for a varied L'UFI'lCLIlIU for .1 less homogeneous school population with a wider range of abilities, interests and .1ptitutles, expansion of :1 more thorough physical etlucation and recreation program for youth, promotion of Ll more rapid pupil growth in mathematics. and expansion of our science program, Neither did we wait until tl1e end ol Wforld XXf.1r II hetore we began to look forward to peatehtime prohlems. Wfhile the war was in progress numerous high school students were assisted in continuing their high school education while in one of the armed Services. At the close of the war many veterans returned, and we welcomed them in our atempt to aid high school and junior college students to adjust themselves to study procedures forgotten for tl1e moment while occupied in the war activities on the sea, in the air. and in the fox holes. Wfe helieve tl1at if the educational system of America and other countries can develop the minds capable of producing the atomic homh, we can and will produce tl1e minds capable of solving peace-time prohlems, Y N. E. DI5MoN15Y XVhat makes an institution strong? is .1 question that will provoke different answers from different persons. Some will say a school is strong because there are a large number of studentsg others, because there is an extensive physical plantg still others, a well-trained faculty. A school may have all these things and still not be strong. The strength lies in the spirit of the institution. This spirit is a willingness of teachers and students to work for the welfare of everyone and not for personal gain alone, This spirit recognizes that any institution is on the road to decay when its people are wont to rest upon laurels of the past. It is a spirit that makes the present alive, vitalg looks to the future with confidence. Estherville High School and Estherville junior College have that spirit. It is the spirit that makes the institution strongg it is this spirit that will make it rise to even greater heights. Y-W. B. I-IAMMIQR. W. B. I GIRL RESERVES AND l-ll-Y Wlien the picture of the Girl Reserves was taken, the organization was merely a social club with the girls elected into the club by secret ballot. The vote was taken by them to affiliate with the National YWCA. This group formed the nucleus of the large organization which gave every girl in EHS the privilege of joining. At the beginning of this school year Miss Mary Ellen Bottom was the sponsor. Now that the group is larger, there are two additional supervisors, Miss Dorothy Keller and Miss Betty jean Beaver. Last fall the Hi-Y club became a part of the national YMCA. Each boy is helped by the Hi-Y to become a better member of his church, his school, and his social life. Sponsors of the Hi-Y club are G. Arthur Luther, Lyman L. Bump, and C, Raymond Rutt. Two projects of the club were 11 panel discussion on student relationships and the formal initiation ceremony conducted by a group of members from Spencer under the supervision of Ray Norman. -36- 3' WOODEN SPOONS AND FFA The girls in the home economics classes in the high school are members of the Wooden Spoons organization. This club made it possible for the girls in these classes to have social meetings. In addition it has helped to develop their poise and personality. This year the club is under the supervision of Mrs. Geraldine Steele, the homemaking department instructor. Boys who are planning to make a career of farming have become members of the Future Farmers of America. Each member has taken part in group activities and has earned dividends from individual projects. The boys do not, however, spend all of their time in work. Their other activities include sports and recreaton. Mr. Edwin Thoreson, head of the agriculture department, is sponsor of this group. O as -7,7- ,,, KJV? Margaret Moore JUNIOR COLLEGE GIRLS' GLEE CLUB The first peace-time year since 1941 has brought about the renewal of almost forgotten junior college activities. The enlarged enrollment made possible the organization of a girls' glee club under the super- vision of Miss Helen johnson, junior college vocal instructor. This group had two regular practices each week. It provided music for several school and community functions throughout the year. JUNIOR COLLEGE SEXTET The members of the junior college sextet are chosen from the girls' glee club. This group sang at the fall concert presented by the high school band, between acts at the junior class play, at the annual Christmas program sponsored by the Womenls Club of Estherville, and at several other functions. This is a national and state organization consisting of students who are interested in teaching. The organization was an outgrowth of the Horace Mann Centennial of 1936-39. No greater tribute could be paid to the great educator, Horace Mann, than the organization of clubs in high schools and chapters in colleges in recognition of his advancement of the training of teachers in America. Purposes of the organization are to create an interest in teaching among young people and to give them some training in professional groups before they actually become teachers in the field. The local chapter is affiliated with the state organization and hopes soon to af- filiate with the national chapter. Officers at present are: Wilma Hansen, presidentg Dale Holroyd, vice-presidentg and Helen Sawyer, secretary and treasurer. Miss Harriet A. Woods is the sponsor. .62- 63- A . ALL COLLEGE GIRLS Among the more active social organizations in the Estherville junior College is the All College Girls club. The meetings are held once a month and all college women are members. The dinners are planned and prepared by committees within the group. Officials of the club include: Barbara Bixby, president, Karleton Voigt, vice-president, and Janice Miller, secretary and treasurer. The high light of the year was a dinner held at the Gardston Hotel when members acted as hostesses to their mother or a friend. Values of the club are two-fold in that it not only affords many pleasant associations but also promotes better feeling and understanding between the students and the faculty. JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL Playing in junior college sports competition for the hrst time since 19-il. the Estherville Wfolves won five out of eight games, making a record which classes the quintet among the outstanding jaycee teams of northwest Iowa. Coach Elmer Starr, discharged naval veteran, drew his starting line-up from a ten-rnan squad filled with returned service- men, using john and joe Wood as guardsg Greg McNally, centerg and jim Kennedy and Dale I-Iolroyd, forwards. john McTavish was a regular forward before leaving school to enter the University of Iowa. After easily defeating the Independents at Gruver, the Wolxfes lost close games to Fort Dodge and Mason City on successive nights, After having a practice session, the players outscored Eagle Grove 57-40, making the high score of the season. In their next encounter, the Wolx'es lost a second time to the towering Fort Dodge Giants. For the duration of the schedule the Wfolves could not be stopped. Winnirig from Wfaldorf, Eagle Grove, and Mason City, Estherville players passed their opponents by at least sixteen points, hitting their stride against Mason City in the Wolsfes' last home game. Leading the scoring for the team were jim Kennedy, john XVood, and Dale Holroyd. Tilts played in the latter part of the season included a game at Arnolds Park and a return engagement with Waldorf. -64- Pl-ICTG-FINISI-I Spring Fever . . . Snowloound . . . Silly? . . .
